MARHNE MHMTARY ACADEMY 320 IWO JIMA BOULEVARD O HARLINGEN, TEXAS 78550 512-423-6006 A YQUTARJ- ' 2' 2, 3 Q O SUPERINTENDENTfS MESSAGE This has been another good year for MMA, with continuing growth and progress being reflected in all areas of operation. The closing enrollment of 140 cadets was the highest yet, and the graduating class of l97O was the largest and strongest. Median College Board test scores placed the entire top half of-the graduating class above the minimums required by the service academies. The MCJROTC unit received the highest possible rating of HNoteworthyH from the Marine Corps Inspector General for the fourth consecutive year. The scope and variety of our athletic and social programs were increased. Three cadets were appointed to the Naval Academy. Others were accepted, some with NROTC and AROTC scholarships, by a variety of good civilian institutions, including Rice, Univer- sity of Texas, Texas A 8 M, The Citadel, Tulane, Florida State, Purdue, University of Michigan, University of Illinois and Colorado State. Seven graduates will return to MMA as post- graduates in order to enhance their prospects for future ser- vice academy appointments or college scholarships, and for the second consecutive year more than 80? of invited undergraduates will reenroll. A distinguished committee of educators visited the Academy and recommended continuing accreditation by the Texas Education Agency, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and full membership in the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest. All hands may take justifiable pride in these accomplish- ments, but my particular appreciation, congratulations and best wishes go to the members of the Class of 1970 as they swell the ranks of M A alumni. E . H. HURST Brigadier General, USMC CRetD Superintendent

THE WTHTIIIOISE wASHlxf.1oN TO THE 1970 GRADUATING CLASS MARINE MILITARY ACADEM It is traditional on commencement day to congratulate the senior class and to address all of the graduates in terms of what the future holds for them. I am breaking that tra- dition, and instead of congratulating and addressing the class as a whole, I would prefer to direct my thoughts to each of you individually, through this letter. If I had the opportunity to greet each of you individually, this is what I would say: Congratulations -- on being who you are, a unique hu an being capable of making a special contribution o our nation and the world. Congratulations on being fortunate enough to have parents and teachers and administrators who care deeply about you. I don't have to tell you what the future holds for you. You know that life has responsibilities as well as rewards, failures as well as successes, tragedies as well as joys. You know that our nation offers splendid opportznity -- and faces grave problems. On your commencement day, then, the important question is what you hold for the future. I am confident that your special and irreplaceable qualities of mind and heart and spirit will contribute to the building of a string, free and Just nation and a peaceful world. As you go forward you take with you my best wishes and highest hopes. N I
