The '69 football team had a winning season with a five and five record. Once the Leathernecks were down with a one win and five loss record. Amazingly the Leathernecks came back to win their last four games, three of them by shutouts! Coach Morton took over as head coach, and, with assistance from Coach Reyner and Doc Anderson, put together a hard-fighting team of cadets from all parts of the world. Coach Morton and staff did a highly commendable job. The Leathernecks started the season off with a win but lost their next five games, one of them to La Feria, 2-O. However, the Marines came back and won the last four games, including a shut out of the Leathernecks' rival, St. joseph of Brownsville, 20-0. The Marines' leading ground gainer was all-district halfback Buddy Sawyer, who broke the school yardage record with a total of 1604 yards. Another all-district player was Captain Bill Arnold, linebacker.
