Once the Leathernecks were down with a one win and five loss record. Amazingly the Leathernecks came back to win their last four games, three of them by shutouts! Coach Morton took over as head coach, and, with assistance from Coach Reyner and Doc Anderson, put together a hard-fighting team of cadets from all parts of the world. Coach Morton and staff did a highly commendable job. The Leathernecks started the season off with a win but lost their next five games, one of them to La Feria, 2-O. However, the Marines came back and won the last four games, including a shut out of the Leathernecks' rival, St. joseph of Brownsville, 20-0. Coach Lewis, with the able assistance of Doc Anderson, fashioned a fighting team from promising underclassmen, who, otherwise, might not have had a chance to play football, The season's highlight was undoubtedly the game in which the Marines shut out the Santa Rosa Junior Varsity by a score of 8-0. This was the Marine Mili- tary Academy's first game on its own home field and the game ball has been preserved to mark the occasion. The players learned much and gained valuable experi- ence. Coach Morton came to the Marine Military Academy from Catholic High School in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was a USMC JROTC instructor and head football coach. His Catholic High School team had a record of 8-1-1 and was rated lst in the state early in the season. Coach Morton has coached high school football for 4 years with the fantastic record of 25-6-2. Coach Morton played and coached service football for fifteen years in the Marines. He has played on many of the Marine teams and some Navy teams. In 1964 he was player-coach for the San Diego Marines when they were all-service champs. Coach Morton has played with and coached many players in the service who are now playing professional football. He is an able coach and the Marine Military Academy is fortunate to have him. The scope and variety of our athletic and social programs were increased. Three cadets were appointed to the Naval Academy. Others were accepted, some with NROTC and AROTC scholarships, by a variety of good civilian institutions, including Rice, Univer- sity of Texas, Texas A 8 M, The Citadel, Tulane, Florida State, Purdue, University of Michigan, University of Illinois and Colorado State. Seven graduates will return to MMA as post- graduates in order to enhance their prospects for future ser- vice academy appointments or college scholarships, and for the second consecutive year more than 80? of invited undergraduates will reenroll. A distinguished committee of educators visited the Academy and recommended continuing accreditation by the Texas Education Agency, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and full membership in the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest. All hands may take justifiable pride in these accomplish- ments, but my particular appreciation, congratulations and best wishes go to the members of the Class of 1970 as they swell the ranks of M A alumni. E . H. HURST Brigadier General, USMC CRetD Superintendent THE WTHTIIIOISE wASHlxf.1oN TO THE 1970 GRADUATING CLASS MARINE MILITARY ACADEM It is traditional on commencement day to congratulate the senior class and to address all of the graduates in terms of what the future holds for them. I am breaking that tra- dition, and instead of congratulating and addressing the class as a whole, I would prefer to direct my thoughts to each of you individually, through this letter. If I had the opportunity to greet each of you individually, this is what I would say: Congratulations -- on being who you are, a unique hu an being capable of making a special contribution o our nation and the world. Congratulations on being fortunate enough to have parents and teachers and administrators who care deeply about you. I don't have to tell you what the future holds for you. You know that life has responsibilities as well as rewards, failures as well as successes, tragedies as well as joys. You know that our nation offers splendid opportznity -- and faces grave problems. On your commencement day, then, the important question is what you hold for the future. I am confident that your special and irreplaceable qualities of mind and heart and spirit will contribute to the building of a string, free and Just nation and a peaceful world. As you go forward you take with you my best wishes and highest hopes. N I Cadet! Parent irectory ADDISON, Paul Davis QMr.-Mrs. Eugene M.
