The enthusiatic work of the Staff has resulted in the merging of many pictures to form a composite picture of the school year. WHEREAS, the following data should provide for your enjoyment, we contend that our time was well spent. We have checked most minutely the quality of the pictorial commentary on the life of Marine City High School. Administration Superintendent Dr. Appel Principal Mr. Trudell 5 Secretaries Mrs. Rose Moody Mrs. Emily Melberg ACADEMICS Mr. Bartow Sciences The science courses at MCHS are general science, biology, chemistry, advanced chemistry, and physics They are taught by Mr. Newcombe, Mr. Riley, and Mr Teichow. General science gives a general back- ground in science. Biology is the study of living things, chem- istry is the science dealing with matter and its changes, and physics is the science dealing with energy and the transforma- tions of it. Mr. Riley Mr. Riley is demonstrating for some physics students. Biology students in the greenhouse. 8 . . . and Mathematics Mathematics classes include Math 9, Algebra Ii, solid geometry, and trigonometry. They are taught by Mrs. McCarron, Mr. Teichow, and Mr. Davidson. Math 9 or algebra is required of all freshmen. In plane geometry students learn axioms, definitions, and theorems. Algebra II is an extension of Algebra I. Solid geometry is a study of three dimen- sional objects Trig is the study of the basic functions of triangles. Mrs. McCarron Who’s Euclid? Algebra students puzzle? Where is everybody? Mr. Teichow Mr. Teichow gives his help. 9 Miss Brown Languages . . . The language department consists of two basic sections: English and Spanish. The English classes are English 9, English 10, English 11, and English 12. The English teachers are Miss Brown, Miss Cawrse, Mr. Plummer, and Mr. Reed. There are two Spanish classes, Spanish I and Spanish II, which are taught by Mr. Chamberlain. After two years of Spanish, a student will be able to read and speak Spanish. Ninth graders study hard. Doesn ' t anyone know? Tenth grade students at work. 10 . . . and Forensics Forensics class is composed of two parts. The first semester is devoted to debate. This year our team finished in second place in the Blue Water Forensics League. The Varsity Debaters are Dan Giardina, Robert MacDonald, Kay Connors, and Sandra Williams. Orations, declamations, extemporaneous speaking, and humorous and interpretive readings comprise the second semester. Rest and relaxation’ Kay, read louder! Practice makes perfect Everybody smile now! 11 Today’s News . . . Social Studies Social Studies classes are government, U. S. history, world history, and civics. The classes are taught by Mr. Davidson, Mr. Schankin, and Mr. Chamberlain. Government, which is required of all Seniors, is a study of American govern- ment on the national and local levels. U. S. history, required of all Juniors, is the history of our country from colonial to modern times. World history is the history of the world since its beginning. Civics is a general government course. Who was King Tut? Where are the jokes? Interesting?? 12 Commercial Commercial classes include book- keeping, Shorthand I and II, Typing I and II and junior business and Business English. Mrs. Joachim, Miss Cawrse, and Mr. Horning are the devoted teachers. The purpose of commercial courses is to prepare students who want a career in business. Miss Cawrse Jo Ann adds up figures . . . and the better-than-average Bookkeeping class. Mrs. Joachim 13 Homemaking Homemaking classes are carried thru high school until the third year. The girls in these classes learn how to cook, sew, and become better all around homemakers. Miss Cooper F Hour class doesn’t look too busy, does it? A typical homemaker, working at the stove. 14 Shop Freshman shop is taught by Mr. Connors, Mr. Flemming and Mr. Bartow. Mr. Connors teaches General Metals, Wood- working I and II and Power Mechanics. General Metals studies different kinds and construction of metals. Woodworking I and II are concerned most with the woodworking machines. Power Mechanics is concerned with gasoline engines. Mechanical Drawing is similar to drafting. Hard worker? Listening to a lecture. Industrious workers. Think it will float? 15 Miss Kimmet The girls’ gym classes are open to all girls with gym required for ninth and tenth grades. The girls play soccer, basketball, volley ball, badminton, and softball. They also participate in stunts and tumbling, trampoline, ice skating, and track and field. They also have a fitness test and do exercises. The gym classes are taught by Miss Kimmet. Mr. Wiinikainen The boys’ gym classes are taught by Mr. Wiinikainen and Mr. Davidson. They work out on the parallel and chinning bars. They also play football, basketball, baseball, and par- ticipate in track. Use of the trampoline, stunts, tumbling, and exercises are all a part of their physical fitness program. 16 Art Mr. Werden Students interested in art have several opportunities to take it. Art I is for beginning students, Art II is for intermediate students, and Art III is for advanced students. They work with the potter ' s wheel and the jig saw. They use a textbook for art appreciation. The classes make abstract designs, posters, wood objects, cartoons, pottery, plastics, copper jewelry, still lifes, and leather objects. They made the stained glass windows that decorated the cafeteria at Christmas. The art classes are taught by Mr. Werden. This year there were many changes, such as having two representatives from the Junior and the Senior classes and crowning the Queen on Tuesday. Wednesday there was a bonfire climaxed by burning a Cros-Lex player in effigy. The girls were given corsages at the assembly, and Jackie was given red roses at the game. At halftime Jackie was crowned again by Kathy Lewis, last year ' s queen. During halftime the band presented a show including a dance routine. After the game the dance was held in the girls ' half of the gym. The Freshman representative was Joan Beebe; the Sophomore representative Sarah Chapman; the Junior representatives, Sandy Franklin and Vickie Lozen; the Senior Representatives, Sheryl Warwick and Betty Wiginton. Scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and service are the qualities all members must have. The sponsors are Miss Radtke and Mr. Reed. Four Senior girls are Cadet Teachers this year. Barbara Hopson works with the Kindergarten. Barbara Flemming works in the First Grade and Andrea Sickle in the Fourth Grade. Farm mechanics and agricultural economics are added to the Junior and Senior levels. The Future Farmers of America comes from vocational agri- culture. The purpose of FFA is to develop leader- ship. Mr. Bartow is the sponsor. They have a parliamentary procedure team which goes to contests. They plan to raise chickens as a spring project Peppy future farmers. Science Club Science club members clean the aquarium and the green house during their meetings. Some members are trying to launch a rocket. One group is studying electronics. The officers are President Dick Ameel; Vice-President, Floyd Reichle; Secretary, Barton Doetsch; Treasurer, Steve Lipa ; and Student Council Rep- resentative, Mike Connolly. Chess Club The officers of the Chess Club are as follows: President, Gregg Horn; Vice- President, Joe Lisee; Secretary, Mary Jane Hillier ; Treasurer, Mike LaBuhn; and Student Council Representative, Ed Duchane. The Chess Club has an average attendance of twenty-five. Because the club is composed of about one-half beginners, they didn’t start tournament play at the beginning of the year but plan to later. The club owns twenty chess sets.
