With seven seniors, three juniors, and one freshman in the starting line- up, and good reserve players for each position, the local lads faced Memphis at Ward-Cottrell Park on September 20 in the opener, losing by a 7-0 score. On September 27, however, the Mariners hit their stride in defeating Oxford, 18-0. Still on their home field for the third game, the Mariners played host on October 4 to Marysville. This was the county league opener — a thriller all the way that was clinched when Jay DeCou slipped over for the only touchdown of the game. The final score was 6-0. (continued on page 22) 20
