FATHER LAWRENCE RYAN: Principal, English, Religion . . . rincipafh 7fWeJ5age . Dear Graduates: Congratulations and best wishes on your graduation! You are a class of which any school would be justly proud: a class devoted to God and the Blessed Mother Mary. tal- ented in the classroom and on the athletic field. skilled on the stage and in the speaker's rostrum, imbued with a keen sense of responsibility and leadership, inspired with genuine school spirit. On Thursday morning before your graduation, you will gather with your parents around the altar. On another Thursday long ago our Lord gathered His students around Him to celebrate the Last Supper. It is fitting that you new apostles of Christ will gather around the altar, for during your four years here you have come often to the chapel for confession. for Mass. and for Holy Communion. Often you have come away from the concentration of the class room and the clamor of the athletic field to talk to our Lord and His Blessed Mother about your ioys and your sorrows. your hopes and your disappointments. Like a mountain climber, you turn to rest against the side of the mountain. As you look out. you see how lar you have ascended since you were a somewhat bewildered, naive freshman. From the height, you look back over the last iour years and relive many haPPY times - a good retreat, an outstanding report card, the Senior play, rewards for excelling in ath- letics. drama, or speech, or a hard earned victory in your spiritual or scholastic life. You hold in your hand a diploma of Marin Catholic High School. This diploma means much, for it carries with it heavy responsibilities. In the days of the Roman Empire, the Roman legionaires. the proudest fighting men in the ancient world. bore a tatoo mark on their arms. That mark was a sign of public honor when they upheld the traditions of the legion. But when they forgot or deserted that glory of the Roman legion, that mark reminded all of their frightful fall. The diploma of Marin Catholic High School is similar to this mark. It is not simply a mark of scholastic achievement. This diploma means that you have been educated to fight your way bravely and courageously into a world that has no end, but consists of ever- lasting happiness and glory. e You graduates find your ioy mixed with sadness as you leave. But you will never really leave Marin Catholic High School or your teachers because the threads of love and affection have been wound too tightly around your heart. This school is your school: these teachers are your loyal friends. Your affection for this school is proved by the sentiments of love and gratitude that well up in your hearts as you say goodbye. Our prayer and our wish is that you will remain loyal to what we have taught you. Remember that you are graduates of Marin Catholic High School. Your parents and your teachers are staking their honor upon you. Guard and protect that honor by being loyal to God all the days of your life. God bless you!
