This is our picture story of Marietta High School, the 1959 Orian. llll iff with:-'i 'JF f Ng,.:f-f1-,aj.-.,- 31 in 'S , ' 4' .- bi ,.A , gan Qtlsthz 1 5- W . ., ' . ,saw-F scxigqgrggfg 5 q i , ftp- 1l.1L. Although watching television and studying simultaneously may cause the guilty student to develop a peculiar disease known as low graditis, it is commonly practiced. The Betsey Mills Club was the scene of many a dance after football and basket- ball games. These Friday and Saturday night activities were sponsored by dif- ferent school organizotions and turned out to be successes throughout the year. ...nl 83 l. we :QQ E 4 ., .- . '+-.. , . A new queen was to be crowned, floats were to be judged, and a big dance was to follow the game. The floats had circled the field, and now everyone's attention was focused on the queen candidates, one of which would reign over all the Homecoming activities. Then Judy Spra- gue, last yearls queen, stepped forward and crowned Judie Corbett 1958 Homecoming Queen. Following our victory over Cambridge, the homecoming dance, Hlust A Dream, with its autumnal colors and the music of the Stan Leonard Quintet was a perfect climax. Senior Student Council The Senior Student Council has receiv- ed several outstanding honors during the year. The Council was the host in the fall and in the spring for the Blennerhassett Area Student Council Conference. Bob Pindar served as president and Sudy Ros- enbusch as secretary-treasurer of the six- teen-school organization. Two delegates attended the State Convention in Colum- bus, and plans were made for several members to attend the State Student Council W'orkshop at Athens during the summer. The Council participated in the weekly radio broadcasts under the direc- tion of Mrs. Briscoe and was also quite active in raising funds for the foreign exchange student to be brought to Nlari- etta in 1959-60. Other regular activities were the decoration of the school at Christmas and participation in the Youth- in-Government election. , L 5- L 1 4nn '. - lzsf. The speech department gives training and practice in many kinds of speech, including conversation, choral recitals, prepared speeches, discussion and debate. Speech training includes practice in useful forms of writing prepara- tion of outlines, briefs, notes, and other varie- ties of writing. The training is effective in giv- ing more self-confidence and in helping stu- dents improve bodily action, pronunciation and articulation. The speech department is established on the principle that speech is a learned activity and can therefore be improved by training. VVith the recognition of man's need to com- municate in the world of today, speaking and listening become vital areas of learning in our educational institutions. During the past year, the speech depart- ment has cooperated with other departments to offer choral reading in assembly programs and concerts, has entered speech tournaments with many schools in debate and other events, conducted weekly radio news broadcasts, and performed public service to the community by offering discussions and speeches for worth- while projects. E683 Activity has been the theme for our choral groups this year. Under the direction of Mr. Reider, some new groups were introduced and the customary ones grew to greater promi- nence. The Madrigal Singers made several ap- pearances during the Christmas season and were well received. The Senior High Girls' Glee Club activities included the Christmas assembly and the Variety Band show. The Girls' En- semble was kept busy and sang for various groups, both with and without the Choir. Ensemble ROW 2: Beverly Burton, Dona Swiger, Beth Weber, Susie Price, linda Israel, Becky long. The original group, pictured above, participated in the Christmas assembly with all of the other choral groups and the speech department. Undoubtedly, the Senior Choir has been our most active group this year. With the help of many persons in and around Marietta, money was raised for the purchase of new choir robes. They entertained several civic organiza- tions and lodges as well as the many distin- guished guests at the annual Chamber of Com- merce dinner. The first two games with Bellaire and Parkersburg resulted in defeats for the team. However, they were not discouraged for they proceeded to win the next four games. A heartbreaking loss to the rugged Zanesville Blue Devils, losing the game by only three points, was a temporary set back. but then Nlarietta was once again placed in Ohio's football spotlight, when they played their most spectacular game of the season upsetting Newark, the fifth ranked team in the state, by a score of 14 to 0. The defeat of Cambridge by a 46 to 22 score, was the final victory of the season. This year a new record was set at M.H.S. when five of the team members were placed on the ALL-COL team. The first victory came with victory over Park- ersburg Catholic by a score of 79 to 62. The next three games, however, resulted in defeats for the team. The trend toward winning began when they defeated Athens, and proceded to win the next four games. Newark once again fell before the mighty Tigers with a final score of 69 to 51. Playing away from home seemed to bother the team at first, losing their road games with both Chillicothe and Zanes- ville. But the team soon got over that and began a winning streak that continued for the rest of their season. We ended up in third place in the COL, but by crushing Chillicothe's number one team by a score of 68-61, the boys proved that if their winning streak had appeared sooner in the season we may have been first in the COL. Two Tiger team members, Frank Christie and Tom Baker, placed first and second in the COL scoring department. Outstanding seniors were Bob Pindar, Jim Sorensen, and John Gerken. But more important than the results of these games was the training and experience that the boys received while playing them. Wlith the help of Coach NVatts they perfected the man to man defense. The coach was very pleased with the progress of the team in developing their bask' etball skills, although they were not in any league. The team showed its ability when they played their best game of the season against Coshocton's sec' ond team reserves. The daily things that make the senior year memorable are soon lost to newer thoughts, but the sum total of experiences will be brought to- gether and relived with each new glance at the 1959 class ring and Marietta High School. Class Colors Class Flower Light Blue and Dark Blue White Rosebud The Senior History There will be no white-washing done by the class of '59 was the theme of the sign placed in the school yard to welcome the ap- proach of the seniors' last year beginning in September, 1958. Many money-making projects were held during the year including a station- ery drive which proved a great success. Since this was the last year of our high school career we were able to look back and realize the fun and memorable experiences we encountered building for a better community. The first four years, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, of our secondary schooling, didn't hold any special significance, except for the excitement of football and basketball ames, the building of class floats, and the production of the plays, A Cup of Tea, The Line of Scrim- mage, and The Remarkable Incident at Car- son Corners. As upperclassmen in our junior year, we settled down to work toward the sponsoring of the Junior Prom. Committees were chosen and projects were set up to raise the amount neces- 92 sary to finance the best prom ever! The class met as a group to elect an editor and assistant editor for the 1959 Orian, also to choose dele- gates to Boys' and Girls' State. Finally, May arrived and the Betsey Mills Gymnasium was elaborately decorated to the theme of the prom, An Affair to Remember. The class picnic held at Masonic Park, where many wore ber- muda shorts and matching knee socks, climaxed a joyful year. At last May, 1959, and we were able to finish another educational goal. The graduating ceremonies were as usual with the Senior Rec- ognition Assembly, the Dinner Dance, and class picnic. Also on Sunda , May 24, Baccalaureate services and on Wedlnesday night, May 27, 1959, at Commencement, we, as a class, were together for our last time. After securing our diplomas, our class motto seemed very appro- priate ....
