Never before in the history of Marietta Schools has such a large build- ij: ing program been undertaken as the one which took place during the term 5:3 of the present Board of Education. This board thoughtfully planned and 5 made possible the present high school building, which adequately takes gi. :FQ care of twelve hundred students. Not only have they done this thing but iq. is-f' they have gone further and are adding to the present plant a new gym- .-.5 nasium. 3 it Li , With the completion of the gymnasium the present board will have 555 S2 finished a task that they set out five years ago to complete. During these ff five years the board has rendered a service for which there is no recom- tg G? pense save the knowledge that every Marietta boy and girl will benefit by QQ- the effort and time conscientiously and efficiently given by each of its 53' L, members. iii gp iii If A , Q, E61 BOOK I Adminis tration Q13 752-E534 HUA!-Uf5M75Zffs?i,9X7iHs li-3 E5 ? Resume of 1927 Football Season j y SPENCER i Y Starting out with a light line-up, but with grim determination to Win or Bust, the Saltmen annexed the first game of the season from Spencer. Cgl The Marietta boys outplayed Spencer all the way. Both touchdowns were made in the last quarter, one by Strayer, the other by Steed. The .fr extra point was made by Steed who carried the ball around right end. 3, PARKERSBURG 2 The week after their victory over Spencer the.Mariettans entertained 3 I the Parkersburg gridders at the College Field. A , fi The game was played in a cold drizzling rain which served to dampen if the spirits of both teams, especially Marietta's. Marietta High emerged ZF from this fray on the short end of a 39 to 0 score. Parkersburg had the heaviest team that they had had for some time l and the Marietta eleven was no match for them. The Orange Tigers, ' however, put up a stubborn iight until the final Whistle blew. gal Qkkrkkgt k.,: In A. . , , . The Saltment outplayed their opponents but failed to score. Late in the last quarter they furnished the crowd some real thrills when they began an advance which brought them to Ashland's Eve-yard line. The score at the end of the game was Marietta 13, Martins Ferry 12. Q 1 Ei: 4 Heldman fCapt,j Stephan QCapf..J Spindler Strayer Hays Liston Resume of the 1927-,28 Basketball Season Although Marietta High School passed thru a basketball season, which could not be called entirely successful, it is of interest to note, that in a number of the games, defeat was by only a small margin of points. In the eighteen games played, three resulted in victories, while in ten of the fifteen games lost, the difference between the score of Marietta and that of her opponents was less than ten points. Not only is this to be taken into consideration in summing up the 1927-28 basketball season, but also the high calibre of the teams played and their position on the schedule. Marietta High has on the record book three victories to her credit. The first of these came with the Athens game, in which Stephan and Heldman divided scoring honors. In the second half of this game the local basketeers displayed some of the Hnest brand of basketball of the entire season and the game ended with Marietta in a 24 to 18 lead. This was the fourth game of the season. Previous to this Marietta had been beaten by the Alumni, Zanesville and McConnelsville. Williamstown High School was the second team to bow to Marietta. Field goals by Hannan and Hays, who each scored three buckets, kept the Pioneer City team just a few jumps ahead of the Buchanan-coached boys. This game started a thriller and ended the same. The score at the half was 9 to 9 and at the end of the game 21 to 17 in Marietta's favor. This contest with Cambridge was like a basketball game read about only in books. At the half the score stood, Cambridge 21-Marietta 5. All hope had been given up. Then came a second half that wiH not soon be forgotten. 'The Dlarietta defense func- tioned with perfection and the entire Marietta team went on a scoring spree. With the score at 29 to 30 and only a few minutes to play, Dick Liston brought the crowd to its feet with a most difficult overhead shot to send the Mariettans in front, 31 to 30. Marietta kept the lead until the Hnalgun, crack. As usual, the two tilts with Parkersburg were looked forward to by the students for rnany days. Parkersburg inanaged, however,in both games to emerge victorious. In the first game at Marietta, Parkersburg scored 26 points to Ma1'ietta's 24, and in the second, held at Parkersburg, Marietta was downed 30 to 35. In two week end trips to the northern part of Ohio, Marietta was defeated by Bellaire, Dover, New Philadelphia and Canton McKinley. The last three games on Marietta High's regular schedule were Middletown, Athens and Zanesville. The local team met defeat at the hands of each. A goodly number of students followed the team to New Concord, where the Eastern Division Basketball Tournament was played. Marietta drew Bellaire in the second game of the entire tournament and although the Rinehart courtiers put up a Hne scrap they were forced to bow to their opponents by a 27 to 33 score. l67l l if YU!-,K nJ4z91Ul7l'5f1l N31-VU 7llV5l7l L I RY IFEUALUAMLKEYJLW157A'N4M'lAMUALUNUcU WL 3 1 x 1 4 1 4 1 P 522- EJJ iw F74 4 l l L Q 1 Lf iff E23 .A ' f af D4 -gl lm' Et fs F59 if F9 -if :gl Lil P3 ,IA ZX E! :L l-, Ev' l EN .lg '44 1 I 14' 4 .4 QQ r-.' :lk Lu' , 4,- Eff f a l E, 'Qi kr f. Isn't this better than shopping around for a low price, and then having to be content with the poorer materials, less careful workmanship, less attractive results, and the far less able assist- ance in planning and producing your work, that '1'11c'uitabIy go with ct low price bid. There is usually so little difference in the price, when it is all summed up, a few dollars will cover it-but there is often a serious and unexpected cl1'fferance in the quality of the work. We do not offer any excuses for our prices, they are what we know We must charge to cover satisfactory materials and work- manship. And-we have never had the mortifying experience of having to offer excuses for the quality of our work. HYDE BROTHERS, PRI TERS Fourth and Fifth Floors.
