This year ' s cafeteria staff is a hardworking group of individuals who are devoted to serving all the students and faculty at MHS. This staff provides healthy and nu- tritious meals everyday for four entire lunch shifts. It is obvious that they are truly dedicated to their work. We are lucky to have such a devoted crew. Front row: Ruth Baker, Mildred Womack, Laura Spears Back row; Edna Wise, Bessie Brown, Annie- bell Hardy The custodial staff of MHS is continu- ously occupied with the upkeep and im- provement of our building. Without their friendly service, MHS would truly suffer. Mr. Lee Bailey can be seen in his daily administrations with a smile for all. Our thanks and appreciation goes to such a wonderful staff. Maintenance Crew: right to left: Lee Bailey. Johnny Echols, Samuel Hembree (center), Michael Delk, Al- gernon Sturghall, Royce Jennings tudent Council The Student Council at Marietta High School is a hard working and involved group of young men and women. To become an elected member of the Student Council is quite an honor: a stu- dent must have an all B average and must have teacher recommendations. Before the elections are held each spring, each candidate and his campaign manager plans a very strategic run- buttons, campaign posters and the whole bit. The Student Council, in collaboration with the OLYMPIAN staff, sponsors a much-looked- forward-to Homecoming Dance in the fall and a dynamic Girlbreak Dance each Sadie Hawkins ' Day. This year the Student Student Council held several fund fund raisers which were very suc- cessful. THey were very proud to sponsor one project which offered contributions to the Stat- ue of Liberty renovation fund. With Mrs. Linda Roper as its advisor, the 1984-85 council made great strides. Reflections The REFLECTIONS is published annually in the spring. Since 1977 the REFLECTIONS has been the official literary outlet for student writ- ers at MHS. The literary journal is the joint effort of Mr. Bonds ' creative writing class. Each stu- dent must contribute original pieces, and each must solicit at least one new MHS contributor. Teachers and staff members are encouraged to write for its pages. Besides having its pages filled by talented and inspired student writeis, the lay- outs, typesetting, and art work are done by Mr. Steve Spofford ' s Graphic Arts classes. Perhaps for these reasons, REFLECTIONS is the only one hundred percent student publication of MHS. Each year the class has a special project. For instance, at Spirit Night, Aug. 28, Mr. Bonds got to ring the Victory Bell as it was rededicated. Last year ' s class with Kerry Shepherd and James Schaeffer worked with various civic groups to get the bell repaired. This year, this class with the Beta Club raised funds from the student body for the repair of the Statue of Liberty. Members include: David Bass, Sandy Crisp, Rachel Johnson, Michelle Everhart, Beth King, Tammy Brown, Kelley Morrison, Charlotte Gil- reath, Julie Whitecotton, Kirsten Priebe, Cissy Barrett, Phillip Douglas, Todd Toy, Tom Ware, Paige Raines, Stephanie Gurley, Jeanne Bobo, Kari Lawandales, Amanda Johnson, Kelly Rou- quette, Kristin Lenhart, Jennifer Hannah, and Robin Clark, and Lynne Smith and Stephanie Gurley are typists. Established in 1929, the newspaper ' s pur- pose is to search out and publish significant news of the school and the community. The PITCHFORK continues in the tradition of that first issue in 1929 in the concern with truth and excellence. The senior class of 1929, led by Mr. James V. Carmichael, sponsored a contest to secure a name for the new paper. Since the school sports ' teams were already known as the Blue Devils, Miss Faith Porch, a teacher at MHS at the time, suggested the name, PITCHFORK, which was the winner. Staff leaders this year are as follows: Jeff Crimm, editor; Julie Pollock, assistant editor; Nancy Bell, feature editor; Shea Myers, editorial chief; Phil Parkerson, ad manager; Treville DuPre, business manager; Mary Beth McCurdy, circulation manager; Patti Crist, sports editor; Tom ' Ware, photographer; and Joey Piggot, typ- ist. Every member has a job which is vital to the success of our yearbook. This year, we have worked hard to produce the 1985 OLYMPIAN, but all our effort would have been in vain without sufficient finances. Our business manager, Terri Wilder, has managed our money wisely, which we earn by selling ads, sponsoring dances, working in the concession stands at home football games, and cleaning up the stadium the following days. The presentation of the yearbook on M-Day is one of the school ' s most anticipated events. The OLYMPIAN staff has certainly put forth the effort to make this the best yearbook ever. Thanks to the staff members for their devoted time and effort, and special thanks to our editor, Craig Brookes, who has worked fervently throughout the year. ' Valentine Court ' 85 Each year, our school selects a Valentine King and Queen in honor of Valentine ' s Day. The court is made up of a King and Queen candidate selected by members of each club throughout MHS. These representatives are then put on a ballot and voted on by the student body. The 1985 Valentine Court was presented at a pep rally on Friday, February 8; yet the winners ' names are kept secret until the annual Valen- tine ' s skating party. This keeps the student body in suspense for almost a week in eager anticipa- tion of the results. It is not until the night of the skating party that it is revealed who will be crowned this year ' s Valentine King and Queen of Marietta High School. Congratulations to the Valentine King and Queen; John Roma, and Eleanor Butler. Black History Week ' 85 -■ - r ' TT. February 11-15, 1985 was designated as Black History Week at Marietta High School. It was a week which was designed to promote under- standing between people. The goal of Black His- tory Week was to encourage students at MHS to learn something new each day abnout famous black Americans and their heritage. The activi- ties this week included various speakers, spiritual singings, five-minute spots on black Americans in the classroom, and library displays. STAR Each year, students from Cobb County Schools, Joseph T. Walker, and Marietta City Schools are chosen as Star Students. At MHS, this title was bestowed upon Melissa Bock. To meet the qualifi- cations of Star Student, one must have a high SAT score, academic excellence, and high goals for the future. Melissa has met these standards, indeed, with her high SAT score and her excellent grades throughout high school. Next year, Melissa has plans to major in pre-med, either at the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech, both which have offered her scholarships. Melissa was filled with anticipation at the thought of receiving this honor, and she was excited when notified by a representative from the Metro Marietta Kiwanis Club. She is looking forward to a banquet which will be held to honor all Star Stu- dents from the area. STAR STUDENT Student Teacher Achievement Recognition 1985 One duty of the Star Student is to choose a Star Teac her. This was a difficult and thoughtful deci- sion for Melissa to make; yet, she finally chose Ms. Judy Williams. Melissa took into consideration that she and Ms. Williams have known each other for quite some time. Studying under Ms. Williams for three years, Melissa has gotten to know her very well. She says of the latter she is concerned about how I am as a person not just as a student. Ms. Williams certainly is a go-getter in the field of edu- cation. She studies abroad during the summers, car- ries students on European tours during spring breaks, and is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. pro- gram at Georgia State. Melissa has certainly learned a lot from this great teacher, and she feels that Ms. Williams is very deserving of this honor. TEACHER WHO ' S Artist, Loyal, Beatles Fan Who ' s Who . . . MHS A Mr. MHS. Jim Reddoch. is a ven ' well-rounded person. His in- volvement in extra-curricular ac- tivities, scholastic achievements, and participation in sports v ill prove this. Jim ' s honors include the Uni- versir ' of Georgia Certificate of Merit, membership in The Soci- ety of Distinguished American High School Students, and Who ' s Who Among American High School Students. Besides his emphasis on aca- demics. Jim has found time to participate in many activities. He has proven his leadership ability this year as president of Key Club. Jim is also a valuable asset to our ath letic department. He is the starting kicker of our varsity foot- ball team and has played soccer for three vears. As a junior. Jim made the All-Star Soccer team and received an honorable men- tion from All-County. It is no wonder that Jim was chosen as Mr. MHS for 1984. Congratulations. Jim! MISS MHS The outstanding senior who has earned the honor of Miss MHS this year is Miss Kelley Morrison. Kelley has been involved in many activities during her four years at MHS. These include Stu- dent Council. FCA, and Beta Club. She is currently the secre- tary of VICA Graphic Aits and the president of Interenes. Kelley has also been a J.V. football and basketball cheer- leader, serving as the co-captain for both. She has been the co- captain for the varsity basketball squad, and is presently the cap- tain. As well as her participation in activities. Kelley also stresses aca- demics. Her achievements can be seen through the numerous awards she has received. Kelley has also been class president for the past two years. It is easy to see why Kelley deserves the honor of Miss MHS. Congratulations. Kelleyl MISS MHS KELLEY MORRISON MR. MHS JIM REDDOCH The student body at Marietta High School enthusiastically showed its spirit during the weetc of Homecoming 1984. This week was enjoyed by everyone, especially seniors, who were among the greatest participants in Spirit Week. Another highlight of Homecoming this year was a special assembly on Friday, followed by the traditional parade. There were many floats involved, but the originality of Graphic Arts ' float won them first place. Yet nothing could detract from the spotlight which fell upon the members of the Homecoming Court. All this Devil pride and spirit was just a prelude to the big event: the Homecoming game and the crowning of the queen. The recipient of the crown and the title ot Homecoming Queen 1984 was none other than Miss Kecha Hall. Escorted by Mr. Terrance Steele, she became the new, proud, (and shocked) Homecoing Queen of Marietta High School. The big finale for Homecoming 1984 was a special dance co-sponsored by the OLYMPIAN and Student Council. This was a great end to a suc- cessful and spirited Homecoming. JOHN BROOKES i TEACHER OF THE YEAR Each year the students, parents and other interested people of our communi- ty nominate and recommend teachers from the system for a very distinct honor: Teacher of the Year for Marietta City Schools. This year this honor was bestowed upon Mr. Jeff Johnson, and a grand choice it was indeed. Mr. Johnson ' s youthful exuberence and his contagious enthusiasm (not only for choral music but also for every MHS student) is so evident. From announcing the home football games each Friday night to directing a medley of ' 50 ' s songs for the Homecom- ing Assembly to preparing for MHS ' s Prestigious Appearance at the lighting of Rich ' s Christmas tree or the Men ' s Cho- rus part on the program for Georgia Mu- sic Educators, Mr. Johnson is involved totally in educating the youth of MHS. Mr. Johnson is an example of what a teacher should stand for, the the Olympi- an staff congratulates and salutes him. DEDICATION Can you imagine a teacher who has spent her entire teaching career of 31 years with one school system and in just two schools? One of the honorees for this year ' s honor has done just that. Many of her present students are the chil- dren of her former students. But this lady is talented with the rare art of making people laugh; she is Miss Entertainment of M.H.S.. She has taught grammar in regular school; she has taught grammar in summer school for many years, and she taught in night school to adults and to Vets. This special person is a born mimic who has a great sense of humor. She is not only a housewife but also a devoted mother and an adoring grandmother. She taught at old Lemon Street High School for many years where she helped with the yearbook. She is very active in her church, Cole Street Baptist. Most students at M.H.S. remember her for many things; an entertaining teacher, a singer of spirituals each Febru- ary to help celebrate Black History Week, and especially as a yarn spinner of tall tales. Teachers who have devoted them- selves to their craft need to be remem- bered, respected, and honored. There- fore, the Olympian staff of 1985 honors Mrs. Dorothy Morris Dyer. DEDICATION L 1 m 1 1 Teachers should never be stereotyped. Their diverse personalities mai e their in- dividuality stand out; their individuality makes us remember them in special ways. Once one gets to know this gentle- man, who sometimes appears to be cryp- tic, cynical, abrupt, and humorous, but who is, in reality, always caring, one has met one of MHS ' true characters. This teacher became a part of MHS history and tradition in 1S)60. Since then he has been the varsity football cheer- leader sponsor, the sponsor of DEC, and now defunct social club, and he began the very first Key Club on the Marietta High campus. He once hauled the now stationary Victory Bell (atop Northcutt Stadium) on a special trailer cart behind his car to all away-football games, and he helped pull it up and down the sidelines of both home and away games — He has always been a loyal Blue Devil fan, sup- porting every aspect of MHS life. He is remembered kindly by students whom he has taught in his twenty-five years here; it is rare that a day passes in which some student fails to say, my mom dad said hello, and do you remem- ber when you taught them? This man ' s kindness is always in evi- dence, yet he prefers anonymity and would die before he admitted he liked you — but never fear, he does; he is a very caring person. We appreciate people such as he, and we long remember their example. We, the Olympian staff of 1985, feel very spe- cial about honoring Mr. Robert Ross Amacker! BEN WILKINS (1934-1984) COACH BENJAMIN TYRONE WILKINS- 1934-1984 COACH BEN AND BIG BEN Marietta City School has known a man of great magnitude; Marietta has lost a great, yet humble man — Coach Wilkins. Coach Ben always considered himself a man behind the scenes, and he was this, but he was an unsung hero in many cases. He is remembered by his former students from old Lemon Street High, Marietta High, and Marietta Junior H igh as a big man with a gentle voice and an unbiased view of mankind. He had a special knack for relating to all kids and their needs. He could size up a situation in a hurry and could, magically, come up with the right thing to say always. Coach Ben was born and reared b Florida, educated at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, and spent all of his teaching years in the Marietta City System. While at Lemon Street, he coached a State Championship football team, and he once coached the Georgia High School All-Star Team. When Marietta High and Lemon Street High integrated, Coach Ben helped to smooth this change. He chose to come to MHS and be a friend to the kids and to help them adjust to the change of schools. He was always there, ready to help. Coach Wilkins himself had a taste of the Big Life when he was chosen, after college, to play baseball for the Dodgers. He was a good player, but he chose to teach rather than play profes- sional ball. In the late 1970 ' s, he rather reluctantly agreed to go to the junior high as assistant principal. He continued to come to football practice each afternoon until a very few weeks before his death. Very soon a lasting monument to Coach Wil- kins will be erected at Northcutt Stadium, Some- where on that stone Coach Ben ' s often-quoted belief should be etched: Be Somebody! He always admonished the youth of MHS to work to be somebody. The 1976 OLYMPIAN, Marietta High School ' s yearbook, said of Coach Wilkins when it dedicated the yearbook to him; Americans admire people with ideals. We, as American citizens of Marietta High School, appreciate the quab ' ties of Americanism that are exemplified by all the faculty of our school. We especially admire one particular man. Men of ideals are not uncommon; men who stand up for and practice their ideals are. As a teacher, we admire his zeal; as a coach, we strive to learn his principles of sportsmanship and fairplay. As a friend, we recognize his sincerity, and as a man we admire, appreciate, and recognize his qualities as a good citizen, and we realize keenly that here truly is an individual in whom we can see the values of an Ameri- can at work and at play! For these, and countless other reasons, we choose to remember a great teacher, coach, and friend. c o a c h B e n PRIDE Marietta as a mother, As a guide and as a friend We ' ll be loyal to your colors. And your honor we ' ll defend. As for you you ' re always no ble And your guidance ever true. To your cause we ' ll all be loyal. Marietta White and Blue. The time has finally come for the seniors to graduate. Our class, the Class of ' 85, is one of the best classes to move through Marietta High School. I hope this yearbook will be a lasting reminder to all the seniors, and underclassmen, of the good times, bad times, happy times, and sad times during their 1984-85 school year. The staff has worked diligently all year long preparing this book for its presentation. We, the staff, are proud of the long hours we worked toward its completion, and we hope that everyone is as proud of this book as we are. This book would not have been possible if it were not for the guidance of Mr. Bonds, our advisor, and the assistance of the administration. The support given the yearbook by Mr. Garrett is especially appreciat- ed. While every staff member contributes his part, some staff members went above and beyond the normal caU of duty; these need to be recognized: Ben Brooks, Lynne Smith and Kari Lawandales. Good luck to all the seniors. I hope that each of you will often turn the pages of this OLYMPIAN to refresh the memories of your senior year. Sincerely, Craig Brookes Editor, 1985 Olympian Marietta school of glory. School of pride and honor rare. We will do our best to make you Prouder of the name you bear. We ' ll do all that ' s in our power. To obtain what ' s right for you, Doing things that show we ' re worthy of our Royal White and Blue.
