'XVhen he looked to see what he would have for the ,49-'50 sea- son, he found only two returning lettermen, YVayne Bishop and Sam Hensley. However, there were many prospects, including footballers Dan Theodocion, t'Bud- dy , jones, and Bill Young. Adding to the Devils' team were recruits lil. XV. Abernathy, Freddy Mathis, Charles Pettett, Frank Bettis, and Buddy Fields. The Marietta cagers opened their initial game with Cassville and lost by a humilating score of 56-17. Services of E. XV. Abernathy were shattered when he broke his hand in physical education and was out of play for a month. The hoopsters won their next game by defeating llapeville, 34-25, but lost the next to Russell, 48-38, then they hit a short victory trail by winning their next two games. They then toppled Col- lege Park, 49-33, led by NVayne 'tPossum Bishop with l9 points. The next win came the following night when the flu-ridden Devils took to the hardwood and handed the Murphy VVar Eagles a five point defeat, 35-30. The next seven games for the Blue Devils were heart- breakers. Marietta lost to VVcst Fulton, lylurphy, Par- ker lligh from South Carolina, Athens, Canton, and Gainesville. These losses must have inspired the Devils because they came back strong to defeat five of the teams which had defeated them. They took a hard fought game from the College Park Rams, 64-53. Druid Hills was next to fall before the Devils with a score of 46-30. Then they trounced a highly experienced Cassville team, 47-37, which had handed them a crushing de- feat the first of the season. Band Has New Director At the beginning of school students wondered who the jolly, friendly man with a smile always on his face could be. On inquiring they learned that he is Nr. XVhitney tlubner, new director of the band. Mr. llubncr is a congenial friend not only of the mem- bers of the band but also of eyery student of M. ll. S. 'l'hey haye all learned to loye and appreciate him. XX ith an increased number of members, the band has put on top performances this year. The show at the half of the Decatur game was particularly good and showed that the hand members had put much work into the preparation of their intricate dance. 'l'wice the band delighted eyeryone by play- ing in chapel. 'l'hey are always ready to do their part in eiyic affairs. On Memorial Day they led the entire school in a parade to the confederate ceme- tery to decorate the soldiers' graves. 'l'he latter halt of the year they practiced concert music to play at the District Music lfestiyal where they won a 'toncl' ratingg then they journeyed to lylilledgeyillc to play at the State lfestiyal. All these things are the result of much hard work by the members as well as by Mr. llubner. 'l'he outstanding purpose of the band is to giye students who are interested in music an opportunity to make something of their talents, but, as everyone can easily see, they make school life more liyely. Members of the band include: First Row-Billy league, Cathryne Mitchell, Ieanell Landers, Ann Siiinnons, lane llallenger, Iune Crowder, Carolync Mitchell, Iimmy Ingram. Dramatic Club Entertains l.ights-Camera--Aetion-!! No, you aren't on a moyic set. You are just at a practice perfornnmce of the Aeschylitc Troupe of the Marietta High Dramatic Club. It was a happy afternoon when the adyisor, Miss Mildred Black, called a meeting of all those interested in dramatics. 'llhere were many there from the eighth through the twelfth grades, but only a lucky few were picked to make up the l95O Dramatic Club. V l rom this chosen few came electricians, to see that the llgliting effects were handled properly, stage managers, to arrange the sets between acts, make-up artists, to apply facial make-up and care for costumes, and, most important of all, actors and actresses, to learn their parts with correct expres- sion. After weeks of practice in which each individual did his part to make the play a success, their efforts were finally rewarded by a large applauding audience on opening night. Not only docs the Acsehylite 'l'roup entertain with intrigu- ing plays, but they also give an annual ball for their fellow students at Nl. H. S. 'l'hc 'tRosc Ball -'l'he t'Masque Ball , both will long be remembered by students and alumni of Marietta High. Sluggers Go All Out For A Winning Team After last year's unsuccessful baseball season, a group of dis- appointed players decided to try their hand at American l.egion baseball. 'l'here seemed to haye been a transformation as some of the school's players who had neyer hit .300 in high school were maintaining a .700 average for a while. There was also a noticeable decrease in the number of errors made. These boys apparently learned to work more as a team than they had done last season. l iye members of that winning Legion nine form the nucleus around which Coach Harrison Anderson expects to build the best team Xlarietta has had in four years. These Legion boy-s include Sam Hensley, Dan 'l'heodocion, t'Buddy'l jones, Iimmy' lfitts, and Oliver Studstill. Hensley will lead the team from shortstop but will also handle some ot the mound duties. 'l'heodocion, as catcher, who batted oyer .300 last year has been called the best prospect. 'tBuddy lones, a right hander, will probably carry most of the burden of the pitching. If jones isu't hurling he may see action out in the field along with Iimmy l itts whose fielding is good and who also hits well. '1'he hurling staff will be composed of lones, Hensley, li. XV. Aim And Scope In Physical Education Classroom tension is relieved each day by an hour of physical education. The variety of activities ahvays keeps the girls inter- ested and active. Bliss Nlathews, girls' instructor, taught such sports as svvim- ming, volley ball, basketball, soccer, softball, fundamentals, stunts and tumbling, badminton. and folk dances during the year. lu order to develop the students physically, she strove: To develop organic, muscular strength, and endurance. 'l'o develop control and grace of body movement and apprecia- tion of correct body posture. To develop skill in dancing and sports activities that vvill carry over into desirable leisure-time activities. To develop qualities of leadership. 'l'o develop acceptable social conduct. To provide emotional outlet 'through creative rhytlnns and recreational sports. One objective of physical education is dependent on and at- tained by another. Activities that develop strength and endur- ance create organic vigorg they provide outlets for thc emotions and can be made to promote group socialization. Activities and exercises cannot produce health, but when the activities and ex- ercises of a directed physical education program are planned te produce physical fitness, improved health results. 'l'he effect ot physical education is measurable in terms of student develop- ment, just as is the effect of any other phase of educational life. Basketball vvas the main interest of most of the girls this year. The classes held an exciting tournament vvith second period on top. Then this period played the girls' varsity team but lost by several points. Born during the turbulent first great World War. th: OLYMPIAN for thc past 33 years has faithfully recorded year by year the activities and pers, nalities of the Marietta High School student body. Coplcs of each edition have become treasured keepsakes, The OLYMPIAN serves as an invaluable adjunct to the history of Marietta - - - its people. its growth. its progress. 191 BRUMBY PRESS has produced every edition of the Marietta High School GLYMPIAN - - - a fact of which we are extremely proud. Every year. into each OLYMPlAN has gone the expzrt crafts- manship and high quality which chai'acl.erizes all printing done by BRUMBY PRESS. When we say we are proud'7 ol' having printed the OLYMPIAN for so long a time, we mean just that. We are proud to have had the opportunity of serving succeeding classes at Marietta High School in such a capacity. Too, the association with the various students in helping to plan and produce the OLYMPIAN has meant a great deal to us. This reproduction shows how the very first edition of the Marietta High School OLYMPIAN appeared. Al- though in great contrast to the OLYMPIAN of today. this 1917 OLYMPIAN dis- plays the same high quality of printing that has marked each subsequent edition. Brumby Press has printed every OLYMPIAN since the initial issue. having produced with pride each yearbook in keeping with the honored name and tradition ol' Marietta School. Hijjh 1950 But most of all, when we say we are proud, we mean being highly pleased and gratified at the not- able recognition which has been accorded the OLYMPIAN, especially during recent years, for its superior quality in every respect. This recogni- tion includes being given an ALL-AMERICAN rat- ing, the highest accolade a high school yearbook may receive, four tirnes during the past ten years. So with this, the 33rd edition of the OLYMPIAN, we at BRUMBY PRESS extend heartiest congra- tulations to the 1950 staff, while expressing the sincere hope that this year, as well as in the years to come, the OLYMPIAN may continue to merit the highest possible acclaim.
