Sigma Kappas with Cabaret The following day the men selected their queen by voting in the Pit. A bit of excitement occurred when a group of freshmen decided that women should also have a choice in selecting the queen. They circulated a petition and a vote was put up to the campusg however, tradition prevailed at Marietta. During halftime at the Homecoming football game the winners were announced: this year's queen was Laine Axelson, and the Chi O's took first in serenades and the Sigma Kappas took second. It was an exciting climactic weekend with a task completed that was to unite the Greeks with the Independents in a weekend of just plain fun. For those involved, the rehearsals and jitters began the first week of classes and continued to mount until the big weekend. Six serenades were presented in order to introduce the Homecoming Queen candidates to the male students. The serenades consisted of 15-minute skits which were performed once for the judge in Ban Johnson Fieldhouse and the next night were presented eight times-in front of each fraternity and the Independent men's dorms. 26
