DR AND MRS FRANK E DUDDY JR During his first year as Marietta College's thirteenth president, Dr. Frank E. Duddy, Jr. has offered a sincere and sympathetic approach to the growth and aspirations of the school. By means of the Round table Discussions, in which all students are welcomed and invited to ask the president or any other administrative officers about issues concerning the College, but also the growth and direction of the institution as a learning plant and as a place where intellectual stimulation is offered and accepted. As an administrator, Dr. Duddy is well qualified. He attended Harvard University as a Buckley Scholar upon graduation cum laude from DePauw University, where in 1959 he was awarded an honorary LL.D. At Harvard he earned his M.A. and PhD. in the field of modern Euro- pean history. Before entering the Navy in 1943, Dr. 1136 President ot Marietta College Duddy taught at Northwestern University, DePauw, and Stephens College After the war he was a professor of history at the United States Naval Academy where he was also chairman of the committee teaching United States foreign policy, geography, and international re- lations. His most recent contribution to academic life was his serving a seven year term of office as the president of Westminister College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Duddy has assumed command of Marietta Col- lege's administration rapidly and well. He now belongs to a tradition of 128 years standing which has been dedicated to the ideal of a strong liberal arts college. lts emphasis is placed on the values of a' life contributing to the leadership of society by means of educating its students in those goals and achievements of our rapidly advancing culture. dean of college dn merrill IZ patferson Merrill R. Patterson, Dean of the College, is one of the most important men on the Marietta College campus. As the college administrator, Dean Patterson is President Duddy's right hand. As such he is an integral part of all academic committees, entailing full responsibility for the curriculum faculty and students. In this respect his duties are highly taxing, but Dean Patterson has always made time to remain in contact with the students as individuals. Dean Patterson has had extensive training for his ottice as an academician. He holds degrees from Wesley- an, Yale, and Brown Universities, and has been a Hillyer Professor of English since 1938. His reputation as a scholar and his achievements as Dean have brought him recognition from many sources, several of which are: Who's Who in America, the Stillwater Conference of Academic Deans, of which he is a past president, and the American Conference of Academic Deans, for which he was elected treasurer. The admiration held for him by the student body is evidenced by the numerous affairs at which Dean Patter- son presides, including presenting each year's Home- coming Queen, and acting as auctioneer for the annual Pi Delta Epsilon auction. The combination of his sincere appreciation of others and a record of his scholastic attainments 'Forms the picture ofa remarkably capable man who has help- ed to make the Marietta College tradition. Since his graduation from Marietta College in 1949, Dean Hobba has been on the faculty of the Wisconsin high schools as a speech correctionist and teacher of-advanced English, and has taught speech and English at Marietta College since 1958. His new post is the first administrative office of his career. During his six years as a professor, Dean Walt has developed into a well-known and loved part of the College. He has spoken to the men in the various housing units of the campus and the fraternity houses, and has in- terviewed all the freshman men individually since the beginning of the year. As the man who is most important in the development of qualities of self-discipline and responsibility of male students during their college years, his sensible approaches to their problems is much valued. Dean Hobba plans to continue teaching several courses in addition to carrying on his numerous duties as Dean of Men, including the administration of the health and welfare of all College men and their housing. dean of Women Ruth A. Wilcox is one of the most energetic women of Marietta College. She is not only Dean of Women, but serves as current president of the Ohio Association of Women's Deans and counselors, advisor to both the Panhellenic Council and lntaglio, the local women's leader- ship honorary, and serves as a professor in the speech and drama department. Since her arrival at Marietta College in 1946, Miss Wilcox has achieved national recognition as Provice Gover- nor of Pi Kappa Delta, national forensics hon- orary, and as parliamentarian for the National Association of University Women. She has often applied her summer months to extended learn- ing, such as the workshop she attended for deans of students at Columbia University. Dean Wilcox, in spite of, or perhaps be- cause of her busy life of activities, has always maintained close individual contact with the women of Marietta College. Her personality and vigorous assistance have influenced a large per- centage of the women's Greek groups, always in the direction of more intelligent approaches to problems and their solutions. She acts as mediator and guide to help women achieve their individual goals as well as the ideals of their groups and activities. walter! hobba 38 I7 ZLFUSZLGGS llilll ll FRONT ROW: Raymond M. However, the cooperation of the student body is essential to the greater efficiency of the working organization. One of the main reasons for the founding of the Senate in 1935 was to improve represent- ative student government on campus. Member- ship, in order to preserve these representative standards, is limited to two members from each fraternity and sorority, and nine independent students. Although the office of President of Senate is automatically filled by the President of - Y V . ,u l--r ,J-Q , ANTHONY LESH Student Body President the Student Body, the offices of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer are filled by elections within the Senate. The Senate has the power to determine the campus elections, govern the voting procedure, supervise the campaigns, and maintain the privilege of reporting the results. Most of the student organizations function from the money they receive from Senate, and the allocation of this subsidy is another reserved power. Con- firmation of publication heads and activities taking place on Homecoming or Spring Week- end must also be made by Senate. Another power is the duty to discuss any student activi- ties, changes or recommendations affecting the SENATE EXECUTIVE BOARD: Richard Taylor, Senate Treasurer: Walter Webber, Vice Presidentp Anthony Lesh, Presidentp Kathleen Olson, Secretaryg William Edwards, Student Body Treasurer. WILLIAM EDWARDS Student Body Treasurer student body, cmd, if necessary, take action and propose action to the Administration. In 1963 one of the Senate's major proposals was finally realized in the Constitution. The pro- vision for a Student Judicial Council, which had been proposed by several presidential candi- dates, was made by amendment and revision of the Constitution, also providing a broader organizational base for the government. This is not the first time that the Constitution has been revised. The present version, approved by maior- ity in 1959, saw the formulation and addition of the by-laws in 1959-60, their ratification in 1960, and the amendments of 1963 which have been enumerated. The by-laws which were chang- Y .4 Jack Hopkins addresses the Senate. ed in 1960 were: The listing of those organi- zations eligible for Senate recognition and allo- cation, limiting each organization to three nomi- nees for Who's Who, the Independents having one nominee for each Senator, and allowing the administration to delete from and not add to the list of nominees. Student Body offers two Memorial Grants annually, one to a male student and the other to a female student. Based on need and service to the College, the qualifications include a 1.5 accumulative average, and an average of at least 1.0 for the previous semester. The grants are given to students at the beginning of the iunior or senior year. SEATED: Richard Taylor, Walter Webber, Anthony Lesh, Kathleen Olson, William Edwards. JOHN GARDNER Chairman In its second year the Judicial Council, under the Chairmanship of John N. Gardner, has made increasing progress in eliminating academic dishonesty. This progress is due to the enthusiasm of its members and the increased cooperation of the Student Body. The Council investigates cases presented to it with the understanding and respect for all of those involved. Only after a thorough examina- tion of a case does the Council render a iudg- ment, and sometimes a penalty, which must meet with the approval of the Dean of the College. judicial council Andrew Liskov and Tina Hansen, Attorneys, with chairman John Gardner. A Constitutional Amendment in T963 creat- ed the Judicial Council as the first big step toward an eventual honor system at Marietta College. With increased student knowledge of, and interest in the Council, the future of an honor system is a hopeful one. The Amendment states that each spring the President of the Student Body shall appoint a Chairman and a six member Council who are all subiect to a two thirds vote of approval by the Student Senate. The Council then elects two At- torneys to aid the Chairman in investigating and presenting cases. Discussion of problems arising between fraternities concerning men's rushing, housing regulations and social activities and any viola- tions due to infractions of these rules are only a part of the business of the Inter-Fraternity Coun- cil. The purpose of the group is to promote harmony among the fraternities by eliminating problems before they develop, and to maintain the general welfare of each group and of the Greek system as a whole. Serving as an advisory board and in ad- ministrative capacities, the Council is composed of two representatives of each Greek organiza- tion. The IFC is the means by which the bond of student, fraternity, brother, and Greek is united. Panhellenic Council, although closely con- cerned with rush rules and freshman girls, is more than a group of bargaining women. It has the power to make or break a sorority if neces- sary, and has always attempted to keep an even keel among the six groups now on campus. There will be a seventh group added next year, according to Dean Ruth A. Wilcox, advisor, and this will call for careful observation by the members of the Council. Each sorority is entitled to one junior and one senior member. These girls are also responsible for an annual tea for the incoming freshmen women and an all-college dance, both held in the fall. This slogan could be the theme for the Marcolian. The eighty students who make up the staff of this first place paper, as rated by the Associated Collegiate Press, have made a concentrated effort to achieve finer mechanics and more effective lay- outs. Part of the credit for this achievement is due to the iournalism news writing class which provided many able reporters. Another mark of success which the paper has been granted is its second place in the Ohio Collegiate Newspaper competition. The paper is noted for its endless .- Much concentrated effort goes into the writing of Marcolian news stories hours of hard work on the part of the staff and editors, producing an accurate and enioyable weekly newspaper which is anticipated eagerly by the student body. The 1965 edition of Pulse magazine, Marietta's maior outlet for creative expression, has finally made an attempt to recognize the stu- dent of art as well as the literati. A new format has been developed this year with an emphasis on artistic creativity, ranging from a new square shape, and brown print on beige paper to three color art work covering several center pages. This center section makes possible for the first time the exhibi- tion by students of original painting and sculpture. The usual blend of poetry, essays, narratives and plays also ap- pear, interspersed with more original art work. This year Pulse was published only once rather than in two editions due to the paucity of manuscripts submitted by students. David DuBuisson and his small staFf have worked onthe magazine together, rather than in specific editorial capacities, to produce an excellent representation of all student creativity. Bogart, David Sh '0'm MQ, p Sf. umwGY, Charles Po,-,er ella kappa There are many things which symbolize success in America today. The high school graduate looks at his diploma with pride. The college graduate compares the two, and finds that he has intensified this pride. But there is one symbol which is universally regarded as the highest de- gree of fulfillment: the key of Phi Beta Kappa. The student who holds this distinctive honor has utilized his four years at Marietta College to the utmost by employing his intellectual capacities in attaining a liberal education, upholding the principles of friendship and morality as well. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is based on standards of excellence which include at least a 2.65 accumulative average and inclusion in the top ten per cent of the senior class. Election of the iunior class member holding the highest accumulative average in his class is generally held dur- ing Commencement Week. Kenneth Bogart was accordingly elected in 1964. A truly liberal education is emphasized by the necessity to have a total of forty-five hours in the fields of language, literature, and history, with a fourth field composed of economics, biology, and religion. An additional six hours must be taken in art, drama, speech, or business. A program of Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars was initiated at Marietta College in 1956 where- by scholars who are leading specialists in their fields are brought here to lecture on their respec- tive topics. The members of Phi Beta Kappa are instrumental in the procedure of this activity. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest national honorary fraternity in the United States. As the first Greek letter society, it was established at William and Mary College in'l776 and is the predecessor of all social fraternities and sororities. The Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered at Marietta College in 1860 as the fourteenth chapter in the United States and the third in Ohio. . h ,I walter 0 . The first nomination comes from each of the respective Greek groups and the Independent Students' Association, which may offer three choices, not necessarily from its own organization. The Student Senate reviews these candidates and selects its preferences from them, subiect to consideration by the president of the student body, the Dean of the College, the Dean of Women, and the Dean Men. The list of requirements for election is similar to that of the various honoraries, but Who's Who demands an even higher standard of achievement. The senior men and women so honored at Marietta College were iudged on the basis of excellence in scholarship and citizenship, service to the school, participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, and the promise of contribution to society after graduation. Who's Who is an organization formed to provide recognition for outstanding effort and achieve- ment and as a reminder that time must be used intelligently to fully develop college experi- ence. As a part of this attainment each member receives a certificate of recognition and a copy of the annual publication which contains an account of his goals and aspirations after college and a brief summary of his opinions about some current topic. It offers an opportunity to com- pare the best students of all colleges and universities, to exchange ideas, values, and aspira- tions, and to see how other students have put them into effect. E71 Il' k w uber John HOP Mi Although outstanding scholarship is one of the requirements for election, lntaglio recognizes other qualities of Marietta College women. The ideals of service to the school, leadership in activities, and creditable character are an integral part of a woman who has fully realized her capabilities, along with maintenance of a superior scholarship record of at least a 1.75 accumulative average. In 1938 a need was realized on the Marietta College campus and lntaglio was organ- ized to promote College spirit and leadership by bringing together those women of similar ambitions and motivation. lntaglio is the local equivalent to Mortar Board, the national women's leadership honorary. It provides tangible evidence that the women elected have utilized their opportunities for intellectual growth and have put their various talents to use in directions re- lated to the good of the College. lntaglio is a service organization as well as an honorary society. During freshman orien- tation each fall, the members cooperate with Omicron Delta Kappa, national men's leader- ship honorary, to greet incoming freshmen women. They also serve at the faculty tea for all freshmen and their parents, and act as hostesses at the annual freshman dance held early in the fall semester. Selection of members is made during the Honors Assembly each spring, at which time an unlimited number of qualified senior and not more than ten iunior women may be tapped. The iunior women have an added responsibility during their senior year to demonstrate to under- class women the ideal which they should strive to achieve. In taglio , d'lh Gottgalt. They must exhibit excellent character- istics of citizenship, and possess a background of useful service to Marietta College during their time spent here. The iunior and senior men elected to ODK perform one of the most highly appreciated services to the Marietta campus. The book sale at the beginning and end of each semester pro- vides an opportunity to buy second-hand text books at reduced prices, as well as to sell books which are no longer needed. The money which ODK receives is used to aid various campus activities, one of which is the practice of adding to the record collection kept on reserve in the Dawes Memorial Library. Members of Omicron Delta Kappa are responsible for the organization and procedure of freshmen orientation each fall and are seen greeting new students, passing out instructions and guides, and acting as hosts at the freshman mixer along with the members of lntaglio, the local women's honorary. Omicron Delta Kappa was instituted on the Marietta College campus to replace the Gold Key Society, a local organization. lt was felt that a chapter of the national honorary was more in keeping with the standards of recognition used at Marietta. A Q I v - rf :- N 1351 Roger Gittord Independent Students' Association Walt Webber Alpha Tau Omega Sieve Mott Mike Kirk Alpha Sigma Phi Delta Upsilon ughest man on campus Ugly Man on Campus! A very dubious honor, but one which brought a great deal of interest and curiousity to Marietta College. Introduced early, but left unexplained, the contest featured rep- resentatives sponsored by each ofthe six Greek fraternities, who were given an opportunity to look as unorthodox as possible for their publicity pictures. During the week of the contest, wigs and hideous grins were most often observed, but other varied and useful props were mentioned and noticed. UMOC has been a tradition at many other colleges, but was iust introduced to Marietta this year by Alpha Phi Omega, national service fraternity. The APO's set up a voting system in which a penny was a vote. The unique feature of this election was that stuffing was not only permitted, but encouraged. This feature was fully appreciated by several groups, and evidently, most thoroughly by the winner, Delta Upsilon, backer of the Ugly Man on Campus, Mike Kirk. The results of the con- test were announced during the Spring Weekend activities, and Kirk was presented with a iug and plaque for his victory. The proceeds of the campaign and election will be used as a part of Dean Merrill R. Patterson's scholarship fund which is used for student aid. That's why we have taken infinite care to do our part in making this Annual comparable only with the best. So remember, for black and white or full color . . . Richardson Printing Corporation ' Marietta, Ohio 1:1791 editors note The i965 Marieltana had, as usual, the fairly obvious task of recording the year, but this is a surface task. When trying to put the whole thing into some tangible record, it defies you. lt served as an activity for some, as a burden for others, many never gave it a thought because it would be ready when they were. It doesn't have a series of accomplishments, and if it did, they wouldn't be of interest. lt had a sort of responsibility to the student body, the advisor, the editors, and the ad- ministration, but they will all disagree about what it was and whether or not it filled it. Probably its greatest responsibility was to the College, not people alone, but an entity that is more a thought or feeling that can't really be pictured or written about. Many people influenced the book and much of it was conceived in places other than the office and by people other than the staff. Some of it was inspired by the iazz rhythms echoing from the music room down the hall and by the shattering noise of the 9:50 library crowd iamming into the Pit. The constant clattering of the typewriters from the Marcolian office was an encouragement and a reminder to keep working to meet those deadlines. Some of the ideas incorporated first appeared as dreams, while studying, or in class, but the end product was different from the original idea. lt had been shaped by the College and was changed. And when l965 is iust a number and this book is dust covered on the shelf, perhaps the pages may be remembered and bring to mind the student who knew so very much . . . who worked . . . who played . . . and lived this year, and maybe it will recall another world . . . a world apart . . the College. the mariettana yearbook of marietta college marietta, ohio Editor-in-Chief --- --- Paulette Higginbotham Business Manager -- ......
