Iilllll We of the Class of Forty-nine do hereby dedicate this, our last and most precious yearbook, to the man who, during our last year at Marietta, was elevated to the honored office of president of this college, to begin his first of many years, we hope, as shepherd of the multifarious flock of students who are and will continue to be gathered here. The news of his honor was heart-warming to all of us 5 for in three of our years here, he won our ever increasing respect and admiration as Dean of Men. Our very first impression of him caused us to think and sometimes say to one another, Here's a likeable guy, a regular fellow. And that impression has grown with each year at Marietta, until now, in our final hours here, we leave him with the highest esteem and respect that can be shown to any man. As a man, he is endowed with the ability to gather common sense and spread it in every direction. He can only be a force for good at Marietta. It is not exaggeration to term him as an Abe Lincoln type of person: innately good, intelligent, and honest. And with those qualities, no one could fail to win homage. We feel sure that he will do much to increase the prestige of Marietta College. Probably, later in life, when many of us remember the happy days spent here, one incident among others will return to our minds. And that will be the story of Dean Irvine's Adventure. We all know how shrewdly and fearlessly he surprised burglars at his brother's farm and helped capture them. It was surprising news, yet understandable, for we thought it characteristic of him. And as Dean of Men, he was ever a friend in need and a worthy counselor. Some of us owe him further respect for his understanding whenever we fouled up during a semester. The second chance that he gave us was the one that carried us through to a Hrm Hnish. H Thus we part from Marietta and from the man whose guidance, help, and friendly administration have helped make Marietta one of the kindest and happiest of inspirations toward the fulfillment of our each and every ambition. And so it is to you, President Irvine, that we dedicate this, our final yearbook, ever wishing you good health, good cheer, and good luck. -Q Cfass of! 'I Q4 Q
