A NEW PQESIDENT Dr. Irvine grew up on a farm in Wash- ington County. In 1908 he came to Marietta as a boy of 15, and worked his way through both high school and college. I-Ie served as student assistant in biology at the college under Professor H. R. Eggleston, who still heads that department. After graduation, cum laude, from Mari- etta College in 1917, Dr. Irvine proceeded to the University of Pittsburgh from which institution he received his master's and doctor's degrees. During World War I he served in the artillery. From 1922 through 1937 he - e.- ?,e'jj.--'- - . DR. W. BAY IRVINE V president 4' lk.. taught school and then served as vice- principal at the Sharon, Pa., High School. He left in 1937 to accept the principalship at Kittanning, Pa., Where he Worked until 1941. In that year he returned to Marietta College as director of admissions. On October 16, 1948, the trustees of Marietta College named Dr. Irvine to the post of president of the college, a position vacant since the resignation of Dr. William A. Shimer in July of 1947. During the interim the college had' been under the direction. of a three-man administrative committee, headed by Dr. Irvine as chair- man.
