Froude -Seneca ELMER HARRY SIMONS Lnfe us full of amusement to an UYFIUSIDQ ITIGTI H W Bee her JOAN ELVVABETH WIENcR Conient ns huppuness 17 Fuller be GERALD HARVEY WHITNEY He hath o heart os sound os a Anonymous JEANNF ALICE RICHT A lrllle nonsense now and lhen ls relished by lhe wlsesl man Anonymous Om President Blll Hopewell Vlce President Don Shackelford Secretary Jeanne Hake Treasurer Ronald Ferllck SENIORS NOT SHOWN Paul Edward Turpun and Jean Bowman 605 The graduation of forty seven seniors rep resents more than a mere ceremony Il IS the end of a long road and the result of twelve years of work play and development As we look back down this road we have traveled we see the progress of a few tottervng tots develop Into the stately march to the strains of Pomp and Clrcumstance The first time any member of our class gained distinction was probably In kinder garten when the principal noticed that Joe Morgan was tled In his chalr during rest period The teacher when asked why replied that this seemed to be the only way that anyone could get any rest The first few years passed rather quickly and soon we were at the top of the ladder the slxth grade Belng a sixth grader is per haps the most Important thtng at that stage of life The first Important thang we did was to elect Jlm Ferns malor of the safety patrol and Betty and Anlta Thomas captains We had been adding a few members to the class each year but Joan Howard topped them all The boys dldnt stop whistling until two or three of them were sent to the cloak room This must have annoyed the glrls f the class for when Ron Fertrck arrived about two weeks later the glrls whispered and sighed all morning The next fall found our motley crew pac Ing the halls of the high school In awe lt was then that we met and made friends with our neighbor schools Falrfax and Plalnvllle T gether as one class ll took us a few weeks to learn how to work locker combinations and avoid being tardy The big thing to the boys that year was IUDIOY hlgh basketball Only five made the team and their prestige increased mmedlately As l remember post office a d spln the milk bottle were popular games of the day Most of us went from the seventh to eighth grade In one year We were getting more lm portant all the time Slnce we were the oldest In the lunlor hugh the boys had the athletics monopollzed Elmer Simons team upset Ron ald Klemme s team to wun the intramural med als and the lunlor hugh team won eight and lost one game ln June we held our graduation exercises complete with punch and cookies When autumn came we were at last In hlgh school The older boys began to take an In terest In some of the freshmen gurls This turn of events pleased them no end As a matter of fact two girls Joan Howard and Betty Thomas had the honor to attend the Prom and that IS the most Important thing In the world lThose who have never been a freshman girl might not understand thlsl Since we had two more boys than girls an the class we held a democratic election and elected all boy officers They were Elmer Sim ons Bull Hopewell Jim Ferns and Ronald Klemme Our first act as sophomores was to tnltlate the freshmen This was an lnltlatlon to end all lnttlatlons and It certainly dld At this time the horde from Wlthrow began to descend upon us DeCamp came In our sophomore year Hezlep In the following year and Jeanne Rlcht In our last year Wlthrows loss IS our something or other We also planned a student strlke but ll fell through because we didnt have anything to strike about We held the first Prom at the Terrace Park Country Club and vt turned out well ln spite of the mad scramble for last minute dates Our first venture Into the drama was the presentation of We Shook The Family Tree Many felt that the scenery and the voices of the actors and actresses shook more than the tree dld Finally we emerged triumphant even as the good guys do In cowboy movies Most of our doing during this past year have been recorded elsewhere In this volume Another reason we wont go Into detail about our senior year IS that the things we did this year wont seem funny till next With this we go leaving our tales behind us Don Shackelford . , . . 1 1 1 r ' 1 . When the l949 TYGCK season started the ma terlal didn t look bad Under the expert leader the state these boys could be made Into champions The season started oft In early April with several triangle meets The team seemed to take them without too much dtfttculty The Wesleyan Relays and the lockland Night Relays were scheduled for the same day This was the first real test of strength The boys dld exceptionally well slnce the small group that went to Wesleyan came bacx wlth two second places while the rest of the boys lust squeaked through to w n the Lockland Relays ln the next several weeks the boys took th meets by storm wtnnlng the tradltlonal Plaln R ays After the Nl V I L meet four mor to htes were crammed Into the already crowded trophy case At the Mraml Relays the boys met a few bad breaks and were nosed out by Wyoming by one ninth of a point The following week they placed third In the dlstrlct During the week that followed the boys really got ser ous about their work They went to the State Finals with a grlm determination to e ther wrn or at least pct up a terrltlc struggle The outlook w s hopeful but It wasnt untll the last race was over that they wee sure they were the state champions i . ' I I , . 74 fa We 'mai Q 4:1 The 1949 Junior High track team had a very successful season since they won both of their track meets In the early part of the season the lnvlta tional Track Meet was held In which all of the neighboring schools participated After the field events and close running Marlemont came out on top with 45 5X6 pomts Readlng was sec ond wlth 38 pomts and Madeira thlrd with 24 A few weeks later came the M V I L Track Meet at the Lockland stadium This track meet was for both hugh school and lunlor hugh The rumor hugh teams were dlvlded Into two classes the elementary rumors and the elementary seniors The semor secton took first place with a total of 44 points whlle the IUHIOYS took second place In their respective group The boys who participated were Moreton McDanlels Clark Jonas McGuire Federle Flscher West Sturwold Tlgner Slmmons Schlotterbeck Straley Root DuPont Bachman and Roessler Since their season In rumor hvgh was so successful the boys will be more than wel come to the hlgh school team I I I . ' 1 77 epafzl of ,-4Z5ZeZcc4 az 5 lt was a beautlful summer day last August 22 1949 when the hard grueling grind began for some fifty young football players With two practices scheduled dally ll dad not take long to foretell that this would be one of the most successful football teams ln the history of the school The season started off very well untll over confidence contrvputed to two losses But reallzlng our mistakes and gaming by experience we became serious once again and played some very fine games By diversified play on offense and defense and our bone cracking tackling we wound up the league schedule by surprising Lockland the league champions and holdlng them to one score ln the first half We finlshed In fourth place Among those of outstanding ablllty during the season were Blll Hopewell Derek Hoxby Joe Morgan Ronald Klemme Myron Austin Jack Breslln Harold Defamp and Jlm Ferns Great things were looked for from the 1950 hoop squad ln the first week however two letter men had to drop basketball for varlous reasons This left us without too much reserve power which IS essential In every game for wlnnlng We played some very outstanding basketball which enabled us to tle Lock land for the champlonshlp of the Mlllcreek Valley lnterscholastlc League during our first full year of league play We ended our season In the quarter finals of the dlstrlct tournament having won eighteen and losing three lt was the most suc cessful season we had In two or three years Ronald Klemme repeated his performance on the local newspaper all star teams whlle our center Wes Damerow also was Included on several all star squads Guards Elmer Simons and Bob McEwan received honorable mention sev eral tlmes while Joe Morgan often helped In playing some very fine games Myron Austin was our chlef substitute and In a number of games was the deciding factor for our vlctory Graduation of these fine players makes a severe challenge to next years team to equal such a fine record Chances for repeating our try for state track titles seemed very good at the beginning of the year but after our star trackman Phll Nunn was lnlured hopes of such glory vanished We dld very well at our Eleventh Annual Marlemont Hugh School lnvltatlonal and the Third Ohio Wesleyan Relays and have won three trl angular track meets Our great shot put man Joe Morgan has set every record In every meet to date ond we have hopes that he will break the state shot put record this year Doc Kusel INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL 1949 50 Won Lost Won 959 Federle Riley U Clemons Preston Werglem Lelman El IS Dneckbroder CHAMPIONS LeRoy Federle Rodney Jonas Terry Jones Fred Hlntze Jim Brady Denny Straley and Don McGuire INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL TOP SCORERS LeRoy Federle Bernardino Fueno Mackey Fleno Larry Meyer Jock Keown 78 ' A ' 1 1 ' 1 1 I I ' I I I , .
