BASKETBALL DISCIPLINE, DEFENSE, 84 DESIRE Row 1 john Madden Bob Cadogan Gerard Ahearn lCaptl Mike Harrahy, Mike Scimeca, lack Foster. Row 2: Mike Hanlon, Dave Divins Mike Flaherty Peter Friel Jimmy Green Kevin Green Coach Arnold Andre The Marian Varsity Basketball team overcame an apparent lack of experienced players and resorted to a very disciplined style of play in posting a fine 11-9 record. With only one starter returning from last year's squad, the team, although full of desire and hustle, was not expected to do well in the tough Catholic Central League, However, many players developed far beyond all hopes this year. At the top of the list was Senior guard lohn Madden, who directed the team on the floor. The fact that 752. of all Mustang points scored this year were assisted is evidence of the un- selfish team effort displayed in the offense. Likewise, teamwork was the prominent feature in a stifling de- fense, keyed by hardworking Captain Gerry Ahearn, which allowed an average of only 49 points per game. Ahearn and junior forward jimmy Green combined to pull down an average of 25 rebounds a game and showed great poise in settling the team down when- ever the need arose. Although the team lacked a strong offensive threat, many see future promise in Sophomore Kevin Green who began to blossom this season at guard. Far from being the league doormats this year, the team missed making the State Tournament by only one game. As far as Coach Arnie Andre and his team are concerned, they did what they set out to do, that is, to prove that Marian discipline, defense, and desire were forces to be reckoned with.
