Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1973 volume:

H If a man does not keep pace fi with his perhaps it is because Q he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears however measured or far away. it .f',:: LL is Thoreau .gali x. We are Marian respondlng to the beat Each individual is a unique mo- ment in the history of the world and to each person comes a spe- cial call to greatness--a summons which demands a response. To stand apart from the crowd, to fol- low the music we hear no matter where it leads, often means to stand alone. Still we must be true to ourselves before we can be true to anyone else. ,,,.-,V f .gwgku 5-T 'T'ZT ' ' I nf V., L'-II A., rl., V' .X , , - . -A . Bishop of Allentown With zeal and competence Bishop McShea and Monsignor Barrett have directed the educators of the Allentown Diocese through a ditlicult year for Catholic schools. They and their assistants have presented the challenge to learn to each person in the diocese. By providing schools in the face of a financial crisis, they gave the opportunity for teachers and students to explore new areas of knowledge and technology. Governed by such leaders the diocesan school system should be able to meet the educational demands of the seventies. Dedicated administrators challenge youth Office of Education Staff: Sister M. Curriculum updates In addition, seniors spent much of their time in learning the funda- mentals of the research paper. The study of English, vital to all walks language of life, was updated and enlivened with recordings and other aids. introduce students to foreign cultures i The language students at Marian accepted the challenge of making the tradi- tions of another culture at least partly their own. Guided by experienced teachers, they explored not only the linguistic mysteries of Latin, French, Spanish or Russian but also the customs and history of the country. Although learning a language can be frustrating at times, the rewards of even small accomplishments compensated for the hours of study. In addition to the required courses, several electives were intro- duced which provided opportunities for exam- ining social and economic problems and state and local government. By research, discussion and political analysis, the faculty and students endeavored to apply their knowledge of his- tory to the problems of the present day. Mr. Ga1lagher's P.O.D. class involves keeping abreast of current events. Michele Dubosky reviews her arti- cle while awating her turn to address the class. Maryellen Stiles reviews her American Cultures as- signment by checking her answers to the chapter questions. The sophomores display serious concern for the prob- lems of the American Indians caused by the expansion of U.S. frontiers in the nineteenth century. R 'Juv j X CR I 1f'V' . my ' 1 --, .. .1 ' If Shared prayer puts the juniors in the proper frame of mind for a study of their role in the People of God. Lorraine Luschas is intent on the guest speaker's remarks about the Vietnam conflict. The morality of contemporary issues forms part of the Religion IV course. Father Handges seems amused as he points out a freshman volunteer to answer his question. RELIGIG Study and worship preserve MHS spirit The importance of Christian ideals in a civil- ization as frenzied as today's was emphasized by the religion faculty who developed in their classes the theme of Christ's law of love. Dis- cussions, films, lectures, shared prayer, and heart-to-heart talks with the priests revealed a new interest and desire of the students to become involved in the courses. The religion curriculum brought to all classes an aware- ness of the problems confronting man through the ages as well as contemporary efforts to modernize the knowledge and service of God through love of His creation. 25 TH develops systematic thinking The demands of a technological society are re- flected in the wide variety of courses offered by the mathematics department at Marian. Courses ranged from advanced topics and the usual aca- demic program to business math on the practical level. The skills developed in these courses facili- tated the growth of accuracy and logical thought which will benefit the students in other areas of study. Individual attention is an important part of modular scheduling. Sister Marguerite Mary helps Iohn Matrishin attack a difficult problem in analysis. Mr. Huber uses surveying equipment to demonstrate prin- ciples of geometry to a group of sophomores. Ji Sister Clare Amata illustrates the complicated theory of electron configuration with the aid of an overhead projector. p Utilizing a parallax viewer, Ioe Dvorak and Elaine Saladyga determine the distance from school to a hill near Tamaqua. I.P.S. students study the properties of matter by weighing a petri dish and its contents. The science program at Marian is dedicated to providing the students with the principles necessary for understanding the rapidly changing world. Freshmen and sophomores learned the fundamental physical properties of matter in the I.P.S. course and explored the secrets of living things in biology. Iunior and senior college-prep students struggled to master the complexities of chemistry and physics. Their courses offered them specialized studies and opportunities for labora- tory experience. Imaginative science programs enabled the students to acquire a deeper respect for God's creation and to prepare for specific academic goals. K Sophomores gather round the model of a frog as they explore the mys- teries of vertebrate anatomy. SCIENCE Experimentation answers man's curiosity Perfection in typing is the aim of Steve Valent and Patty Creedon. The errors are few but provide a dramatic scene for the camera. BUSINESS Skills open the door to success The expanding opportunities of the business world can be met only by responsible people who have been well trained. Marian's Business Education students applied them- selves to the task of mastering stenography, bookkeeping and typ- ing. Future oflice personnel bene- fited by using modern machines and learning current techniques. In addition, the Business Resource Center served both the students and the faculty since the senior secretarial class produced count- less jobs for their employers. Qc-' f.L 'n6l' Care of the business machines is an important part of the commercial course. Sister Dolores jean demonstrates the art of cleaning a typing element. U-TECH Technical knowledge grows through experience Marian students interested in spe- cialized fields of learning, includ- ing Automative Mechanics, Car- pentry, Cosmetology, Electrical Construction, Practical Nursing and Welding, attended morning classes at the Carbon County Vo- cational Technical School. Taught by a qualified statf, the boys and girls grew to realize the importance of both study and work experience in preparing for their careers. The Vo-Tech program, with its stress on individual skills, continued to emphasize the values that Marian places on the development of each student's particular talents. Bob Roos tries to pry apart two sections of pipe so that the pipe can be extended. PHYSICAL EDUC TIO Exercise improves fitness Inter-class competition in volleyball invigorates the girls' physical education program. Under the direction of a competent staff the students of Marian enthusiastically participated in courses de- signed to promote their physical development. The girls enjoyed an extensive program of volleyball, field hockey, gymnastics and the fundamentals of basket- ball. The male population, in addition to an intensive gymnastics course, worked out with weights and played a variety of team sports. The students of Colt Country had the good fortune of using modern gym equipment in a program dedicated to teaching them that bodily fitness deserves a place equal to scholastic achievement. Physical education instructor Mr. Warke registers disbelief as Tom Shanosky successfully blocks a shot. Music Appreciation teacher, Mr. Coombe, adds his expert voice to the rendition of a classical song. In addition to the required courses, Marian students were offered the opportunity of choosing from a vari- ety of electives, each providing an outlet for their talents and energies. The arts presented cultural en- richment and instruction in specific skills while home economics, mechanical drawing, and driver education focused on more practical interests. Forensics and journalism classes also provided a forum for individ- ual expression and contributed to the extra-curricular achievements of the students. .ix , 1 f a i i - r l-,,.:-:.,,h,,i,k,eV:ehpY- I L-,M V -'Arai' - - , ' 1 f- Fx! . , X . ?A.,F' 11' N x X ,. f , t . uf i 1 352915 1 ' Right: IT-First How: C. Marian students set Man has learned that in his attempt to be a unique individual he must first conform to society and be educated. For only through knowledge and expe- rience can an individual formulate ideas and select the path indicated by his own special drummer. Performing for throngs of vocal fans matured the I.V. squad in both coolness under pressure and basketball prowess. As freshmen, Coach Coassolo's Colts began their association with the exciting world of Marian basketball. As members of the Iunior Varsity, their success added to the stature of the Colt legend and prepared them for varsity action. Once again the Marian Fillies dominated the Schuylkill County League with a perfect 17-0 record. Pine Grove, a traditional rival for the league crown, fell before the championship squad of Coach Elsie Tolan by a 57-43 score. Selfless dedication to their goals, strength- ened by expert coaching, has established the Marian girls as a powerful force in local bas- ketball.
