S. B. A second Pastor to many Mari- anites, Father Hevck is invaluable to students and facultv members both for his wide range of knowledge and his warm understanding of the prob- lems of young people. Bv his 'Kopen-door policv, Father invites all the students to visit his office at any time for a friendly chat or a serious discussion of their problems. During the course of the veal' he insures individual contact with every student through his religion classes, which progress from simple Catholic doctrine for freshmen and sopho- mores to more difficult theology for juniors and finally the senior level marriage course. Father, a graduate of Rice Insti- tute and the University of Toronto, is well-qualified to perform an im- portant service to upperclassmen- that of guiding them into the college or career suited to their abilities. Guidance Counselor !'yI and inspire Marianites SISTER MARY JOAN Coordinating the activities of five hundred students, together with guiding a twenty-member faculty, is an exacting round the clock occupa- tion. Yet Sister Mary Joan, while deftly discharging the details of her office, teaches the fundamentals of government to her senior students. Her debate team carries the knowl- edge attained in the classroom into the discussion forum where extempo- raneous thinking is a premium. Practicality is the keynote of Sis- teris classes in home economics, a course which is fundamental, ac- cording to Sister Mary joan, because the majority of girls will find their vocation in the married state. Sister also sponsors the National Honor Society. Q SISTER MARY IOAN Principal SISTER MARY CAMILLUS Since the School's opening in 1955, Sister Mary Camillus has typified the spirit of Marian to all visitors and students who have been re- ceived by her friendly manner. This year, having relinquished the ex- ternal duties of her office to Mrs. -I. D. Pickell in order to devote more time to the business affairs of the school and the convent, Sister is a welcome sight on her trips to Marian where she imparts her business like manner to her student typists. SISTER MARY CAMILLUS Registrar A high school, like any other or- ganization, cannot succeed without a highly-skilled team of administra- tors at the helm. At Marian this team is comprised of Sister Mary Ioan, principal, Reverend Eugene Heyck, C. S. I want the sophomores to be the most school-spirited class at Marian. With this goal in mind sophomore president Jackie Delaney organized her class at the beginning of the vear. The freshman-sophomore dance sponsored by the class was a good indication that the quota of spirit is being met. The number of sophomores who have added their zest to Marian activities is another good indication that the class is here to stan. Starting off the festivities, Iackie Delaney hands the mop to Iudy Devereux and ,immy Lyle as amie Bavouset, VVayne Kinser, Patty Moore, Renice Kunzman, Larry Andrews, Suzy Ayer, and David Cameron wait their turn. Ronny Yoku- baitis handles the music. Marian's interpreta- tion took the form of a beautiful triptych consisting of the Annuncia- ton, the Visitation, the Nativity, and the adoration by the Magi. Richard Standish and Io Ann Budde played the parents of the infant Jesus, with Bonnie Lee Sedita as the Angel who told Mary that she was to become the Mother of Cod. Suzanne Robi- shaw sang the part of Mary's cousin, Elizabeth. Rick Eiser narrated the scenes as the Annunciation and the Visitation were sung. Angel choirs appeared to herald the blessed arrival. Three Wise Men, Dennis Cviuffre, Steve Mandry, and Anthony Sedita pre- sented their gifts to the Infant, as the Glee Club sang hymns and carols. Gail VVhitehead, still a little starry eyed relives her brief reign as queen of the Christmas Dance. Of all the sports played around the world, track is one of only a few which depends entirely upon the in- dividual who has no one to blame for his mistakes except himself. Larry Andrews and Jim Branch find that pole vaulting, discus throw- ing, and shot put require weight, plenty of strength, and the determi- nation which goes with many hard days of practice, while high jumping requires speed, form, and natural ability. The 100 yard dash and the 220 yard dash require sixty percent natural ability and forty percent form. Sprinters Ned Burns, Tom Schnitzius, and Boyd Favalora work mainly on coming off the starting blocks and staying relaxed. The 440 and the 880 Qhalf-milej are considered similar by Bro lack- son and John Woolson who have learned the value of speed form en durance and the art of thinking fast The person running one of these events must know how to conserve his energy the right time to pass and the right time to exert his re maimng energy at the end of his race Taking the position as track coach was the hardworking coach Bache Waiting for the practice gun are tracksters Ned Burns Boyd Favalora Tom Schnitzius Bro jackson and ohn Woolson 140 J +- 4' 9 1 ' , . . . . 7 I , , , , I - . Q Deserted hallways filled with A deserted hallway . . . An empty room . . . At last the Diadem has gone to press, the frantic final week is done. Now we stand at the threshold of an empty hallway with the ghosts of our laughter and arguments, our jokings and scoldings ringing in our ears. As we survey our second home, the Diadem Room, CRoom 202 of the school libraiyj before closing its door behind us for the last time, we pause to offer our thanks and appreciation to a staff superb. Amid the frantic rush they filled the demanding jobs of writing copy, drawing impossible layouts, and dozens more while managing to preserve the spirit of fun which kept us going during rough moments. Not to be forgotten is the greatest marvel in our mirror of re- membrances-the endless patience of Sister Mary Joseph, our faculty sponsor. Without her constant support and occasional prodding we would not have come even reasonably near meeting our deadlines. Throughout this book we have tried to record and relive the pathways-some difficult, but all of them rewarding-which Marian has travele,d during its first four years. For the class of ,59, who were Marianis first freshmen, these are but the first steps toward lifeis all important goal. Therefore to you who remain behind we leave this empty hallway. Fill it as you will with hopes and dreams and sparkling friendships. This is our legacy to you: the never-to-be-forgotten thrill of treading the Pathways of Progress.
