In this year Marian High School was founded. As the first Catholic co-educational high school in Houston, Marian opened its doors on September 1, 1955 to 283 Freshmen and Sophomores. 1956 saw the junior Class added with an increase in enrollment to 368 students. In the two years of operation, Marian has be- come the symbol of Christian education, lead- ership, and sportsmanship. Realizing that Mary has been pleased to bless us with her loving care, we have chosen the name of our yearbook, the DIADEM, meaning crown, in honor of the Virgin Queen. We sincerely trust that Mary is pleased with our efforts-with this hope we pre- sent our first yearbook with its theme .... Sister Mary Rosaria, by her ex- ample and encouragement, inspires the students to think, judge, and act, constantly and consistently in accord- ance with right reason, illumined by supematural light of the example and teaching of Christ. As Sodality mod- erator, Latin and history teacher, she exerts direct influence on the thoughts of the students. Personal interest, high ideals, and constant help are marks of her leadership under which Marian High School hopes to mold the stu- dents into worthy citizens of this world and the next. Sister Mary Camillus fulfills an important function in her capacity as counselor, registrar, and office ad- ministrator. The assistance which she gives to all, contributes greatly to the efficient operation of the school. Reverend Vincent Thompson, C. S. B., chaplain and guidance counselor, helps students to acquire basic un- derstanding in the major areas of religious truths. Through his daily instructions, he inspires students with a new love and appreciation for the precepts and Commandments as well as for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Father, who cherishes a pure and holy love for the youths confided to his care, has worked with them so that religion may be the crown of the youths' entire training. ,,s L. ii . Through religion we grow in age and grace and wisdom before God and man. Pat Nicosia leads a Sophomore religion class. Margie McGuire, Gretchen Gaclbois, George Parrish, Linda Scott, Sam Iacono, and john Cunningham form a panel during Bible class. 14 Freshman religion students study the text, Power, which illustrates the might of God. Loyalty serves to instruct the Sophomore students in their goal of moral righteous- ness. The Iuniors acquire the ability of defend- ing their faith by studying Guidance, which teaches apologetics. The history of our faith is emphasized in the Bible classes, and all students are instructed in the lit- urgy of the Mass. In accordance with the precepts of the Gospel, the students acquire a sound phi- losophv of life which is the motivating principle of their lives. Business duration Business Education provides a program of education that prepares the stu dents to assume a position of respon- sibility in the field of busi- ness and industry. General business, typing, and gen- eral math foster Christian attitudes toward capital and labor. Math can be interesting as these Business Math students are discovering. Typing class offers experience in accuracy :incl speed for tlit-se busy students. Provitlinq ll ezlrvfullv co- ordinated prograin. Nlariun exnpliusizcs responsibility and Christian ethics in bus- iness affairs. Collecting pure oxygen proves an interesting experiment for Pat Danna, Paul Cai- dousek, Francis Lowe, Andrew Tarkington, and Mike Alderman. The Sciences prepare a student in- tellectually for his chosen profession and also for life itself. The home economics department realizes that on the home is built the nationf' and prepares the student for Christian family living through courses in food and clothing. 16 viruses The main function of the Science courses is to fomi a basic foundation for a broad and liberal education. Scientific and social studies are aimed at helping the student to develop his self expression and to become a re- sponsible and intelligent citizen of our American democracy. ,Art The Art department purposes to help students dlsccrn be luts md to enyox lt Classes lYlCllld6 lnstructlon ln ce ramlcs draxung and puntmg Ar tlstlc tllent 19 eudent ln the mam dxspllys sponsored by th1s group Musxc IS Gods gmft to man It IS the onlv art of heaxen gnen to earth the onlw art of earth ue take to Chorus endeax ors to learn fme choral hteraturc as well as to scrse the school m the fleld of entertunment Manv students further thexr IT1llSlC'll career through prls ate lessons Art students Chfford Craig Tome Tumer Carol Konkle Cathy Doyle and Bro ackson clean the brushes used m thenr lllustratlons P9 A section of the Clee Club practlces for a coming fl'lUSlLhll event I7 ' 1 . The basketball games provided a show of sportsmanship as well as good enter- tainment for Marian supporters. The Colts sparked the season with many exciting games that resulted in close scores. The team fought hard in all games and what they lacked in height and experience, the boys made up for with fight and spirit. Coached by Mr. Bill Golibart, the basketball boys demonstrated their training by fast dribbling and breath-taking long shots at the well attended games. Major competition for the team was between the Catholic high schools of Houston. The highlight of the season was the 19th annual Texas Catholic Interscholastic League basketball tournament at San Antonio. Nineteen teams competed in the meet which was divided into Classes A and B. Marian took an active part in this competitive meet and was able to qualify for the semifinals. 92 Basketball Scoreboard St. Iohn,s Mt. Carmel Friendswood St. Thomas I. V. Angleton St. Thomas I. V. We wish to express our sincere thanks to the many people who have cooperated with us in editing the DIADEM. The staff has compiled and published the DIADEM so that it may be a permanent record of one yea.r's activities at Marian and it is our hope that through this, our first yearbook, we have fulfilled your expectations. Iust as our first thought was dedicated to the Queenship of Mary so our parting word is a petition wherein we say: OBTAIN FOR US THAT ALL WHO NOW IN EVERY CORNER OF THE VVORLD AC- CLAIM AND HAIL YOU QUEEN AND LADY, MAY ONE DAY IN HEAVEN ENIOY THE FULLNESS OF YOUR KINGDOM IN THE VISION OF YOUR DIVINE SON, WHO WITH THE FATHER AND THE HOLY GHOST, LIVETH AND REICNETH FOR EVER AND EVER.
