l I Reaching out, being a friend, caring-all of these are manifested over and over in the academic life of Nlarian. With three minutes before the bell , a small knot of seniors try desperately to interpret the DIVINE COIVIEDY. An inquisitive junior questions Congressman Dervvinski about Senate sub-committees, and grimacing lab partners in a biology class scrape frog eggs out of their specimen. Teachers, too, reflect the reach-out atmosphere of Nlarian. A smile flickers across the face of Va geometry teacher reassuring his budding scholars that the Pythagorean Theorem will be useful someday. Spanish I students are tutored by a teacher who honestly cares that they learn and enjoy a part of Old Spain. Class moderators care enough to spend hours helping students to organize a Peace lVlass, or to illustrate poverty in Biafra for those vvho have known only affluence. Unfortunately, huvvever, the mechanical atmosphere of a classroom sometimes tends to alienate and antagonize its occupants. Sometimes a stranger can almost read faces declaring, l am a person. Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate. When both tear dovvn their stiff fronts and reveal themselves as people, they've made a small step from the darkness tovvard friendship. Reach out! 0
