Informality in class is a special kind of order- enforced not by a small, white detention card, but by a self-imposed obligation to live up to the standards set by mature classmates and a flexible teacher. A stu- dent is allowed to question, and to disagree without fear that he will be mocked by his classmates or be Cut off by a teacher who holds a different view. As Linda Fushi said, I feel more comfortable in those Classes. I feel free to ask questions and express my opinions. Subject matter as well as atmosphere determines the degree of informality possible in class. This in- formality, when attainable, provides its own rewards. An informal religion class magnifies the personal meaning of religion. In social studies, informality en- courages students to listen to each other and to give their ideas. They begin to realize the patterns which tie together the names, dates, and authoritative opin- ions of printed history.
