The Student Speaks Many adults equate youth with irresponsibilityg miniskirts plummet to maxi, the bugaloo dies for the Funky Broadway, and a fifteen-year-old girl is married by a hippie guru. Young people, they think, will try anything once for quick thrills. But is this search for kicks really a product of the hip genera- tion, or is it merely a new label applied to an old phenomenon? Is an English-eyed girl frugging energetically very much different from her mother who was doing the Chicago Hop in bobby socks and saddle shoes twenty-five years ago? Or is each, in her own way, an expression of the vibrancy that comes only with being young and loving it. Yet being young can cause pain as well as joy. Suddenly the kaleidoscope starts spinning too fast, and the teen-ager turns away dizzily, looking for something solid to hang on to. Maybe he will find it in knowing someone with a strong perception of truth and the courage to work towards it, or in realizing his own importance and that of others, or in discovering that God is alive and well, waiting for him to realize His importance. Maybe he will never find it, but today's teen-ager looks anyway. Ns he looks, he notices things which other people don't notice. Some of his comments about what he sees reveal that he has realized some of the fundamental truths about the experience of learning or that he has discovered the joy of caring, others are no more signifi- cant than the name of the group that played at the last sock hop. Nevertheless, all of these observations, because they reflect the awareness and individuality of the teen-ager, are important. There- fore, the staff of the '68 Mariner has augmented the traditional yearbook format with student quotes. This year the student speaks about his classes, his religion, his sports and activities, and his future. Y u lv?
