Through research, discussions, lisTening, and learning, Maria's Science Club members became acquainTed wiTh The various Tields oT science. NOT saTisTied wiTh iusT The regu- lar science courses, members parTicipaTed in The many acTiviTies oT The club. MeeTings consisTed of discussions oT new Theories, and demonsTraTions oT basic prin- ciples. Many lecTures, including a boTany lecTure presenTed by Reverend 'Edward Ak- somaiTis, enabled The members To explore various scienTiTic Tields. Slides and movies were also obTained To supplemenT The lec- Ture subiecTs. Panels given by The members Themselves aroused The inTeresT oT The enTire group and broadened Their scope oT lcnowl- edge. Members of The proiecT secTion used boTh ingenuiTy and hours oT hard worlc To devise experimenTs which were boTh unique and worThwhile. The eTTorTs oT The oTTicers coupled wiTh The guidance of moderaTor, SisTer MargareT Ann, made science come alive. Wifh proiecfs, speeches, and malhemafical games, ninefy girls discovered fhe fun and fascinafion of mafhemafics. The Mafh Club is fhe Maria Chapfer of fhe nafional organizafion, Mu Alpha Thefa. From fhe nafional office members were able fo oblain membership cards, pins, and cerlificafes bearing fhe Mu Alpha Thefa emblem. Publicafions from fhe organizafion aided members in choosing proiecfs and fopics for reporfs. Prolecfs underfalcen by fhe members in- cluded polyhedral ornamenfs for a cafe- feria Chrisfmas free, Mafh Day, and fhe fhird annual Freshman-Sophomore lv1a+h Confesf. During fhe monfhly meefings penfominoes, permufafions and combina- fions, and vecfor geomelry were discussed. ChrisTmas Time provided an opporTuniTy To exhibiT some oT The ChrisTian cusToms oT our Spanish neighbors. The posada, a reTracing oT The search oT Joseph and Mary Tor lodging, and The pinaTa, a molded Tig- ure Tilled wiTh candy brolcen by a blind- Tolded child wielding a sTiclc, were only Two oT The TradiTions re-enacTed by The club. Pan'American Week gave everyone an opporTuniTy To purchase colorTul memenTos oT Spanish arT and craTT. Spain and The oTher Spanish-speaking counTries were rep- resenTed by Toll: songs and dances on ln TernaTional Day. The exhibiT showed The similariTies oT The diTTerenT counTries.
