She enters into work and play in the same good natured friendly way. The 1949 Log Class History In September of 1945, we entered the Freshman Class, and we felt quite proud that we were now a part of Senior High School. On a certain dreaded Friday, 45 trembling Freshmen were initiated by the Seniors. The girls wore baggy dresses, high heels, unmatched knee socks, hair up on one side and down on the other, and makeup on one side of the face and not on the other. The boys had their shirts on backwards and inside out, pants rolled up to their knees and different colored socks. They wore makeup on their face and bandanas on their heads. They were not allowed to use the front stairs during this week, and whenever we met a Senior we had to bow and address him or her as Lord or Lady. If it were necessary for us to enter into their room, we had to remove our shoes and back into the room. The dread we had felt in advance of Initiation swiftly subsided after we realized that it was just in fun. We obeyed their rules and really enjoyed ourselves. As our group was divided in two sections, two sets of officers were chosen. Those elected in Miss Petrovits' room were: President, Gordon McMurray, Vice-President and Secretary, Dorissa VanBenschoten 3 Treasurer, Marjorie tWilliams 5 Homeroom representative, Tom Smith. The Freshmen under Mr. Brockelected the following officers: President, Dorothy Williams, Vice-President, Warren Todd, Secretary and Treasurer, Lynn Bruce, Homeroom representative, Shirley Eglinger. Lynn Bruce was elected Vice-President of the Student Association. Another term passed, and found us in the Sophomore homeroom. We now consisted of 30 members. Mr. Bishop and Miss Petrovits were our class advisors. Election for class officers resulted as follows: President, Peter Hill 3 Vice-President, Albert Trowbridge, Secretary, Dorothy Williamsg Treasurer, Emily McMumber. The homeroom representatives were Bob Peet and Bill Kavanaugh. When we returned, there were 27 members. We were supervised by Mrs. Soper and Miss Hamilton. We had our first high school dance November Z in the gym. Now, at last, we have reached the goal we have looked forward to for so long. We are Seniors. We are assigned to Mrs. Matalavage's room. The class has dwin- dled down. Our Senior Council consists of Peter Hill, Mary Stewart, Lynn Bruce, Dorothy Williams and William Kavanaugh. We have initiated the Freshmen, re- membering when we were in the same spot four years ago. To secure funds for our Senior Trip, we sponsored a very successful junior Prom, we hold bake sales, dances, a carnival, and hope to have a spaghetti supper and card parties. We have yet to look forward to our Senior essays, the Senior trip, and Class Night. On june 30 we will graduate. Although we will be leaving school, memories of all the fun we have had during our school years will always be with us. Our conceit was soon taken out of us hy the Seniors during Freshman lnitiation. The girls wore wool socks over shoes, table-cloth sarongs, large green crepe paper hows, no make-up or jewelry, uncomhed hair and paper bag hats. The lnoys wore wool socks over shoes, make up, jewelry and paper bag hats. VVith this, we had to carry out any order given by our Senior inastcrsffsuch as carrying trays and hooks. NVe were all glad to welcome Friday, as then we were to dress up. That evening a dance was given in our honor. Thus ended the dreaded ordeal of Freshman Initiation. The election of officers and the annual parties followed throughout the year. The following fall we returned to school as gay, young sophomores. Our year as sophs', proved to he a very successful one for us. Dur- ing this year, we sponsored our first dance. In The 1949 Log the spring, plans were made and carried out for a Sophomore Carnival which also proved successful. At the end of the year, after dues were collected and all our profit added up, our hopes for a Senior trip once more came into view. This year, as juniors, we think of ourselves as upper classmeu, each day getting closer to our goal-graduation. This year we are di- vided into two homerooms. These are the art room under the supervision of Miss Troyer, and 209 under Miss Mink. Our junior Council is composed of the fol- lowing meinhersi l'resident, Ray lfdwards, Vice President, .loan Rowe, Secretary, Roy Lee Leonard, with our tifth memlaer heing Clark Tyler. VVC are all looking forward to the planning and sponsoring of the Junior Prom. 13 First row, lrff to 1'igln'4K. Hillriegel, P. Shaver, F. Bennet, J, Laughman, H. Faulkner, R. l.ange. I. Wlilbur, E. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY ln 1948 we entered lligh School only to face the ordeals of Initiation. The girls wore slacks held up with rope. One pant leg was turned up. Un that leg we wore men's socks with a garter. No shoes were allowed. Mens shirts with ties were donned along with a l1lZl11'5 hat, with our hair piled underneath. Boys came with aprons, dresses, hats and make-up. During that year we put on a successful bake-sale. Half the class was under the direction of Mr. Matalavage, the other under Miss Connell. The class officers were: President. Alan Thompsong Secretary, Yvonne llerrickg Treasurer, Kath- 14 leen llillriegel. VVe enjoyed many parties to- gether. Wie entered our Sophomore year under the direction of Mr. Nary and Miss Mahoney. So far we have had a Halloween and Christ- mas party. After the XValton game on Uec. lO we sponsored a very successful dance. Con- stables' orchestra played. The Sophomore class officers this year are: President, Holm Langg Vice l'resident. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY VVe entered school in September, l948, very proud that we were at last Freshmen in high school. Wie were divided into two rooms, the advanced science under Miss Connell, and the elementary science under Mr. Matalavage. The following officers were elected in Mr. Matalavages room: President-Bob Hubhelg Vice President-David Crawford 3 Secretary- Mary Cowan, and TreasurerfAnn Willier. In Miss Connell's room the oliicers elected were: President-Doris Hull, Vice President-Joyce Slade, Secretary-john Goupilg and Treasur- er-Bob Kavanaugh. VV e elected Carol Leming the homeroom representative, and Norman Pirie the alternate. Freshmen Initiation came about three weeks after school started. The girls were seen around school with their dresses inside out and back- wards, hair in a minimum of ten rags, one silk Thr 1949 Log stocking and one ankle sock, and two different shoes. The first day they wore rouge on one cheek and no other make-up. The second day they added rouge on the other cheek, and third day lipstick on one half of their lips, and the fourth day they added lipstick on the other half. The boys were seen wearing feed bags, neck- ties, their pants rolled up above the knees, and two different shoes. They had one silk stocking and one ankle sock. Their hair was parted in the middle with a long stocking hanging down their backs. VVe all had to wear signs saying we were the lowly servant of mistress or master: so and so. No freshmen were allowed to use the main stairs. All during the day we were seen carrying the senior's books in the halls and bowing to the seniors. This kept up until Fri- day when we all dressed up. During the year each homeroom had a Hallo- ween and Christmas party. 15 SEVENTH GRADE lfirsf row, left In riglzt-S. Doho, J. Quackenbush, S. CROSS COUNTRY hy XNARD Kr:AToR Cross Country has been a new sport in our school in the last couple ol years. lt is perhaps one of the most strenuous sports which we now hive in our school, .Xt the meets, each person on each team is required to run the distance, which varies from two to two-ancl-a-halt miles. The win- ning team is cleterminecl by points. W'hen each player comes in, he is nuniberecl starting with one. ancl this proceecls nntil each ancl all runners are in. Then the numbers ol' the place in which each runner came in, are arlflecl together and the tea'n with the fewest points wins. Mr. Klatalavage was the coach, with Bob l'eet as the star runner who always linishecl lirst on onr team. Hur competition was again iiilboa, Miclclleburg anfl Delhi. CHEERLEADING Rah! Rah! It has charge of all ath- letic organizations and supports the publication of the Log and Megaplzozze. The council is made up of live officers and a representative from each class. This year each representative has an alternate to help him. Other years we have had two representatives from each class. Problems are brought before the council and discussed. The decisions are reported to the homerooms to be dis-cussed. The following week at the council meeting the representatives vote as the homerooms have instructed. lligh school students are urged to buy a Student Association ticket. ln this way they become paid up members of the Student Council. They can go to parties and dances sponsored by the council, and attend all the athletic events at reduced rates. This year the offices are held by the following people: Peter Hill-President, Robert Huhbelle-Yice Presidentg Helen Birdsall-Treasurerg Kathleen Hillriegel- Secretary 3 Dorissa Van Benschoten-Business Manager. These people were elected hy popular vote. The president is elected from the Senior Class, vice-president from the Freshman class, the treasurer from the junior Class and the secretary from the Sophomore Class.
