Passengers' History Eagerly we prepared to board the S. S. Margaret Washington on September 10, 1955 by getting acquainted with teachers, trades, and fellow students. Some of the stu- dents were interested in business, foods, clothing, cosmetology, practical nursing, dry cleaning, child care, household operations and tailoring. A get-acquainted assembly, which introduced us to various clubs and organizations, provided an early thrilling experience. Our junior year brought forth talents heretofore undiscovered. Florence Davidson and Robert Hailstock were found to have unusual singing ability, they subsequently represented us on the Pan-American Day program at the Pan-American Union Building. Florence was also presented the DAR Citizenship Award, on February 28, 1958, on behalf of Washington Vocational School. On October 18, 1957, Robert attended A Short Course on Yearbook Production, sponsored by Columbia Scholastic Press Associ- ation at Columbia University. Oratorical contests provided Bernice Morgan with op- portunities to win honors in both her junior and senior years, also Bernice was respon- sible for Washington Vocational winning fourth place in the annual typing contest held for business students at Cardozo High School in 1957. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Evans, Joyce johnson tPresident of the Dramatics Clubl, Deloris Duggans, Loretta Merritt, Catherine johnson, and many other students connected with the Student Council, generously donated their Tuesday evenings to the young people of junior Village. Duggans and Merritt also attended the Friends Service Committee Seminar. Many other senior students, too numerous to be mentioned individually, have been active in clubs whose senior presidents are as follows: Girls' Athletic Association, 1.0- retta Merritt, Student Council, Dramatics Club, Joyce johnson, Thrift Club, Doretha Anthony, Hobby Club, Red Cross, Robert Hailstock, Citizenship Club, Bernice Morgan, Honor Society, Florence Davidson, Yearbook Staff, and Teen Club. Plays, fun and entertainment for parties and programs have been provided from time to time by the Dramatics Club and the GAA. The latter made a trip to Gettys- burg in 1957 under the sponsorship of Mrs. D. H. Locke. The annual popularity contest for the benefit of the Wavohian each year selects among winning contestants Mrs. Margaret Washington, Miss Wavohian, and Mr. Booker T. Washington. The 1957-58 winners were Maxine Collins fClothingD, Zelda Roy, and Octivius Robinson CFoodsJ. Cosmetology and Clothing seniors have represented their departments in annual Fashion Shows, where their talents and imaginations were strikingly exhibited in their hair styles and smart garments. Alas, most of us have weathered every storm, and the good ship has been brought safely through dangerous shoals by Mrs. D. L. Miller tCaptainD, and the good skipper, Mrs. D. M. Allen fSponsorD. We look astern and catch a gleam of the ripples of time -three hard, sad, happy, profitable years. Hail and Farewell!! ....19..
