U -THE CLASS OF 1958. -6- Mrs. V.T. Turner Relires f i R 5 Q' I fax 'N vw P fwii FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Dr. Harold A. Haynes, Deputy Superintendent of D. C. Pub- lic Schoolsg the late Mr. Walter Turner, husband of Mrs. Turnerg Dr. Garnett C. Wilkin- son, retired First Assistant Superintendent of D. C. Schoolsg Mrs. Vivian T. Turnerg Mrs. D. I. Miller, Principal of Wfashington Vocational High Schoolg Mrs. Mattie C. Lee, Principal of Xlifashington Vocational Evening Schoolg and Mr. Francis A. Gregory, Assistant Superintendent in charge of Vocational Schools for D. C., at the Burlington Hotel, honoring Mrs. Turner on her retirement. SHE XVILL BE WELL REMEMBERED Wfashington Vocational has fortunately shared in and profited by the thirty-four years of exceptional teaching service rendered by Mrs. V. T. Turner, Her greatest single contribution was in the field of Child Development: She Set up the Cfhild Care and Nursery Assistants Training Course at Wfashington Vocational. The course has become a model for others in the District and in surrounding areas. Ever mindful of the prob- lems of youth, Mrs. Turner organized a branch of the city-wide Teen Club at this School. Mrs. Turner's educational background was gained in the District Public Schools and at Howard University from which she earned both her AB. and M.A. degrees: the subject selected for her thesis was: THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE XVASHINGTON VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL. -7- clminiotrcction Our Captain Speaks AROUND WASHINGTON VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN 181 DAYS I wish to congratulate the members of the Class of 1958 upon successfully reaching commencement and attaining high school diplomas and trade certificates as awards. As you ascended from the tenth to the twelfth grades, your view of the require- ments, demands, difficulties, pleasures, and satisfactions of the various trade, related, and academic courses became clearer and more appreciated by you. You have learned to acquire in varying degrees, the skills and personalities which are assets for success in the various trades. You placed a value on each of the 181 days of your senior school year as days during which definite goals should be attained. Your graduation may be considered by you as the end of a journey, but to the faculty your departure means the beginning of a far longer trip for you into trade employment made possible through educational advantages. We hope that your many days of future employment will be as fully appreciated by you as the 181 days of your senior year, and that each day will be productive for your employer, for you Cif self-employedb, and the industry in which'you participate. Here in the school we will be watching your progress with great interest and hope, and will be wishing for you speed and success in your trade endeavors. Mrs. D. I. Miller -9- Staff Officers Mrs. A. B. Smith is the Senior First Of- ficer on our ship. She has been very much interested in the welfare of each passenger. She has assisted us in mak- ing final preparation for our voyage, giv- ing us sincere counsel and guidance. Miss L. N, Dodd, Chief Radio Officer, has very efficiently kept office records up to date, operated the switchboard and delivered many messages to the crew. Mrs. Kelly, Staff Purser, orders, sorts, distributes books and supplies with a smile. -10.. ccculty v Q9 'FP- 4? Margaret Washington on September 10, 1955 by getting acquainted with teachers, trades, and fellow students. Some of the stu- dents were interested in business, foods, clothing, cosmetology, practical nursing, dry cleaning, child care, household operations and tailoring. A get-acquainted assembly, which introduced us to various clubs and organizations, provided an early thrilling experience. Our junior year brought forth talents heretofore undiscovered. Florence Davidson and Robert Hailstock were found to have unusual singing ability, they subsequently represented us on the Pan-American Day program at the Pan-American Union Building. Florence was also presented the DAR Citizenship Award, on February 28, 1958, on behalf of Washington Vocational School. On October 18, 1957, Robert attended A Short Course on Yearbook Production, sponsored by Columbia Scholastic Press Associ- ation at Columbia University. Oratorical contests provided Bernice Morgan with op- portunities to win honors in both her junior and senior years, also Bernice was respon- sible for Washington Vocational winning fourth place in the annual typing contest held for business students at Cardozo High School in 1957. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Evans, Joyce johnson tPresident of the Dramatics Clubl, Deloris Duggans, Loretta Merritt, Catherine johnson, and many other students connected with the Student Council, generously donated their Tuesday evenings to the young people of junior Village. Duggans and Merritt also attended the Friends Service Committee Seminar. Many other senior students, too numerous to be mentioned individually, have been active in clubs whose senior presidents are as follows: Girls' Athletic Association, 1.0- retta Merritt, Student Council, Dramatics Club, Joyce johnson, Thrift Club, Doretha Anthony, Hobby Club, Red Cross, Robert Hailstock, Citizenship Club, Bernice Morgan, Honor Society, Florence Davidson, Yearbook Staff, and Teen Club. Plays, fun and entertainment for parties and programs have been provided from time to time by the Dramatics Club and the GAA. The latter made a trip to Gettys- burg in 1957 under the sponsorship of Mrs. D. H. Locke. The annual popularity contest for the benefit of the Wavohian each year selects among winning contestants Mrs. Margaret Washington, Miss Wavohian, and Mr. Booker T. Washington. The 1957-58 winners were Maxine Collins fClothingD, Zelda Roy, and Octivius Robinson CFoodsJ. Cosmetology and Clothing seniors have represented their departments in annual Fashion Shows, where their talents and imaginations were strikingly exhibited in their hair styles and smart garments. Alas, most of us have weathered every storm, and the good ship has been brought safely through dangerous shoals by Mrs. D. L. Miller tCaptainD, and the good skipper, Mrs. D. M. Allen fSponsorD. We look astern and catch a gleam of the ripples of time -three hard, sad, happy, profitable years. Hail and Farewell!! ....19..
