Principal C. G. Matthews Principal’s Message Dear Students: Another school year is rapidly drawing to a close. It has been a good year in many respects. May I take this occasion to thank you for your cooperation and loyalty. We find ourselves still living in a world of unpredictable futures, an abnormal world in which we need to remain as normal as circumstances will permit. T’here are certain fundamental principles which are necessary for any permanent civilization; namely, honesty, sobriety, honor, tolerance, fairness, and love for one’s fellow man. Insofar as you, as young citizens of America, follow these principles in your lives, our country will be strengthened. Keep in mind always that an educated citizenry is the foundation of democracy. Try to equip yourselves through schéol, home, and other learning experiences to serve God and your fellow man in the best possible manner. . Sincerely, C. G. Matthews

Dedication The word, dedication, itself implies the purposes of the service Mr. J. E. Gregg -has given to the Marfa Public Schools for thirty-five years. The definition of dedica- tion as “a devoting to a sacred purpose”’ suggests the true meaning of Mr. Gregg’s teaching and administrative work with the boys and girls, the other teachers, and the school patrons of Marfa. His devotion has been turned not only toward the mental development, but also toward the physical, the spiritual, and the moral growth of children and youth. The protection of the health of all students has been his constant concern, and the up- holding of the ideals of Christ has been his unwavering aim. Mr. Gregg has truly “kept the faith’’ with us—the students, the teachers, and the patrons of Marfa. Hence, it is with loyalty, respect, and grat- itude that this Shorthorn Annual of 1952 is dedicated to our frie nd, Superintendent J. E. Gregg.
