To meet these standards the physical education department has taken a big step towards educating Marengo boys and girls in intelligent basic in- struction for healthful and youthful living. The student is tested so that he or she may engage proficiently and intelligently in hours of re- laxation. With its vast improvements over pre- vious years, students now enjoy touch football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, wrestling, weight lifting, angling, golf, bowling, softball, gymnastics, and track. Athletes are not made in a day! An athletic program is as good as the people who direct it and the students who par- ticipate in it. It is the result of a thorough physical ed- ucation program that begins with basic skill instruction at an early age and carries on until graduation. MRS. RUTH AHRENS heads the girls' physical education department and sponsors the girls' basketball team and Pep Club. MR. HAROLD WILKINSON is the head coach of the Marengo football squad and track team. He also teaches history and economics. MR. ED BADGER is the head coach of the varsity basketball team and also acts as assistant football coach. He teaches American Government and geography. MR. DON HART coaches the summer base- ball team and is assistant coach in football, basket- ball, and track. He also teaches driver education and industrial arts. MR. WARREN OLSON is the head coach of the girls' basketball team and also teaches general science and world history. ...T 'i t,5gM l J: .S 5 Jun 5 T f sl in-Q-I 4 --H 'mf:.1,.. any yah' 'pllf 'iii ' A .5 f' 2454? 'gazed Led by majorette, Ann Langlas, and twirlers, Rosalie Cullum, Dianne Dale, and Linda Hoyt, and under the direction of Don Briceland, the Marengo Tiger Marching Band completed another successful season. The band's first efforts toward an eventful season were consolidated last summer when its members and all people in the Marengo community worked together to raise over S6000 for new band uniforms. On Labor Day the band marched before a large audience who was attending the annual Sweet Corn Day held at Vinton. Again this fall spectators from Marengo and the surrounding areas were pleasantly entertained by the band's halftime presentations at the football games . In late spring the Tiger Marching Band proudly represented Marengo as it performed in the Eastern Iowa Band Festival. The concert band maintained a full schedule of activities this year, beginning with a winter concert just before Christmas. Preparation for th Iowa County Music Festival at Williamsburg, for a spring concert, an e d for contest involved a major portion of the band members' work. Traveling to Pella and Monticello for solo, ensemble, and large group contests, th 6 band discovered that competition among class B schools was greater than any that had previously been encountered. Witn relatively young group of musicians who have had little experi ence, the Marengo Concert Band enjoyed a fairly satisfying season. OT.
