I ARTHUR MILLER ERMA STOCKWELL STANLEY CHURCH HOWARD GRAFF WILLIAM CORSON ERVIN RUDSINSKI kd' 4, ' 1 X 'lil To The Class of 1954, Upon the receipt of this year-book, you will have all but graduated from the Community High School. You will have had the privilege, granted to all American Youth, of attend- ing one of many American high schools. ln no other land in the world could you have had such a privilege. lt is part of your A merican heritage. ' Here, most of you have spent the greater portion of your waking hours for the past four yearx. These have been turbu- lent years-'the 'Cold War , the Korean Conflict, compul- sory military training, and many other momentous events have been passing into history. Nevertheless, during all these disturbances, the real, the true, the important task of lor ever moving forward in life has been steadily and surely accomplished. You are now young men and young women: the future is yours to do with, to a large degree, as you will, ' Many of you may elect to go on to college you may elect to ftnd immediate employment or you may elect to initiate a busutess oi your own Other: of you may not be so fortunate You will have graduated nor knowing what to do or how to do rt You may have many talents and yet not find yourself lf this be the case you are indeed unfortunate But you need not be so for you are living in the age ol opportunity oppornrnity which is always knocking at your door The idea that opportunity knocks only once is not rue in America Farture hall' successes and unfortunate events may be used as stepping stones to greater and more worth vhlle things If you should happen to start out on the wrong track have gumptlon enough to stop and do something useful that you Joy doing Just a word ot' cautlon while you have the choice of many things which you may do and while America wel comes youth no matter how many laurel: you have gained in hlgh school don t don t walt for someone to come along to make you be a success It just doesn t happen that way You have to be your own sell starter! Ax your high school principal l with you much happiness in the days and years ahead and may you from time to little g noe through this year book and remember some of those happy events which you have had these part four years Best wishes E C Nichols BRETT C NIC HOLS ISIIY Illinois State Normal Umve fl111n015 M Ed of 1111no1S Un1verS1TY 1 111111015 Pr1t1C1Pa1 EV Norma M A Un1vers1lY 0 ' secretary Auct-: cot.vt-R tltmou Busmev Sl'm 'e' School for SeC'e e' Northwestem University Evanswnf mums e Pr n g o e g r p 4, . -- a 1 1 t l ' . l l CII' ' . : u - ' ' ' xi l . 1: , :' tj f s i ' . READING ACIDITY AND PHOSPHOROUS TESTS Robert Awe, Allan Jackson, f. F. H. The Future Farmers of America is closely tied up with the vocational agriculture program at the high school. In fact, it is sometimes thought of as the F. F. A. program. This is not quite true. The F. F. A. is a privilege extended to those meeting the requirements. It is difficult to know the greatest single benefit that is derived from the F. F. A. One of its impor- tant accomplishments is the training it provides in leadership. These days of controversy over parity prices, proper soil conservation programs, price support and the like point out a need for farmers who are able to express themselves. ,JVSQ A 1 , - , 41552 1 - , 4. . On Friday afternoon, October 9. the Home- coming parade wound its way through the streets of Marengo. Following the parade, a pep meet- ing was held in front of the Colonial theatre. After the short addresses by Mayor Miller, Principal Nichols, and our coaches, the Junior class was announced as first place winner inthe float contest. The Sophomore class won second place, the Senior class won third place, and the Freshmen last place. On Friday evening our Hgimecoming foe on the football field was Hononegah. Although the team displayed their best fighting spirit, Hon- onegah proved to be victorious. During the half of the football game, the coronation of the Home- coming queen took place, Mary Jane Deneen, l952 Homecoming queen, crowned Charlene Schaefer, our Homecoming queen for l953. After the game, everyone enjoyed the midnight show, featuring a Frankenstien movie, at the Colonial theatre.
