HlStOfy of the Marengo Hlgh School When lVlarengo was lrrst settled about IS37 the settlers after brmgrng their fam rlres saw the need for a school lhe frrst school w hrch consisted of a double log house situated where A E lnhompsons resrdence stands was taught by Miss Carolrne xsobb Mr O P Rogers also taught here IH l838 In l839 a Mrssronary by the name ol hlder Nlarvrn taught a school rn the East Wing of what rs now known as the Lotver house lVlr Lonkhn succeeded htm lhe lVlaren o bchool how ever had rts begrnnrng between l84l and l842 A burld mg srmllar rn style to the country school house of to day was erected where our present school house now stands lhrs rs described as being a long bulldrnv wrth the teacher s desk at the north end and two rows of benches on each srde lqhrs burldmg was used as a church as well as a school bome of the teachers of thrs school w ere Mr Stringer Mr L.1ndesly lVl1ss Lou se Babcock and lVlrss Burnsrde lhe Presbyterran Church was burlt m l852 Rev C F Goodhue was the hrst regular pastor As he was Interested rn furtherrng tne progress of educatron rn Maren go he allowed the basement of thrs church to be used by several prrvate educatronal IH strtutrons lhese rnstrtutrons were known as the academy About the same subjects taurfht rn the Hrgh bchool now were taught here Mr Carson frrst taught here He was succeeded by lVlr Lonkhn Dr lVl1ller also taught here after the lVlarengo College hu ned A two story burldrng was erected rn l852 where the present school burldrng now stands As the enrollment of the school rncreased rt w as found necessary to burld an acl drtron to the school ln H539 furnrshrn two rooms for study and two rooms for recrtatron lhrs burldrng was torn down and a new stone burldlng w as erected rn the early seven res lhrs burldrng was destroyed by lrre rn anuary ISSZ and the present structure of tlagstone was burlt lhrs consrsts ot four rooms on the frrst floor an assembly offrce and two recrtatron rooms on the second floor and two recrtatron rooms on the third floor lhe north burldrng contalnrn the hrst four rades was erected rn l897 Nl S R Painter Nlr Hrneman lVlr lhomas hrchaubraclc Dr Muller and J K Wheeler taught here wrth therr assrstants between the years l85Z and IS75 The frrst class to graduate from the Hrgh bchool was that of 1875 In I877 and l892 there were no raduatmg classes brnce then the Hugh .School has made rapld progress There has been an nrcrease rn the enrollment each year Because of this more teachers have been obtained Sever al new courses have been added to the currrculum the latest berng the Commercial Lourse Reahzrng how eager the young people of Nlarengo and the surroundrng country .re for a Hugh bchool education the voters of Marengo and vrcrnrty voted rn the fall of l9l9 to have a Lommunrty High School It rs hoped that the new burldrng will be erected rn the near future Mary Grover and Olga Voeltz P rge Fu e . .
