XJ Football Team First Row John dankum, David Kllngborg, Tom Garvin, Jerrv Boots, Gary Fisher, Jon feye Terry Mead Second Row Barry Grauer, Bill Kirchoff Jake Means, Ray Drefke, M lin Weicht Mike Carey, Marty Anderson, Duane Neilson, Third Row Asst Coach Mr Jacobson Vernon John on, Harold Seggerman, Kent Erickson, Kirk Evans Loren uoltnen, Jim Bilslend, Rick Ohlendorf, Coach Mr Bradley It was time for the opening kickoff of the season and there were many new faces in the Marcus lineup A mass of graduates had yielded to their underclassmen This was a young team but one Marcus was proud of the whole season, especially the first three games The Eagles out fought Sanborn for a 6 O margin to open the season It was Correctionville who took a 20 O thumping next The Eagles and Akron fought tooth and toe nail, but neither could push the other around The tide changed, and Marcus lost to Moville, and then to Kingsley on our Homecoming Odebolt sneeked by us by one point, and Holstein was out of our class in beating us M8 O It was a fair season with a lot of good clean football being displayed Injuries put a damper in some of the play This gave a little more experience to next season's team The Eagles played on the new field this year and showed some fine crowds good football. Some of the players got mention on honorary teams. Vernon Johnson was placed on the Maple Valley first team. Barry Grauer and David Klingborg were placed on the second team with Jake Means, Ray Drefke, and Norman Rassmussen on Honorable Mention. Vernon Johnson received Honorable Mention on Jack North's Des Moines Register All State Team. Barry Grauer won Honorable Men- tion on the Iowa Daily Press Association team. The squad voted Vernon Johnson the most valuable player on the team.
