Hvmmmwu REVIVED MARCUS IN 'cms 21'j,i',1,',fQ'21'f'2 nm zsn succnss Kfiffiliiu MARCUS SLAPS 1312 MARCUS STRIIIES RY UPSET UN SANBURN KINCSLEY CLUB 217 hagles Deieat Holstem 2819 MARCUS L M CEHLEAQ M 'e s For 61 Record UUSTPUMED E F23 Umzicus Under the reins of Coach Fred Smith the Marcus Eagles enjoyed one of the best football seasons in the school's history Their final record for the season was three wins and one loss was declared co champion Hoville won one more conference game than Marcus, but the Eagles olayed one less game Thus for the first time in the school's history Marcus shared first olace in a football conference The Eagles opened the season by upsetting Sanborn, one of the Sioux Valley Con ference pre favorites, by the score of 13 to 12 After walloplng Correctionville in the rain and mud and then romping over Akron, the boys suffered their only loss of the season Movllle handed them a 19 7 defeat The Eaglesthen'won their first Homecoming game in five years by a lopsided margin over Cleghorn They polished off Kingsley, but their game with Lelars Gehlen was cancelled because of the flu Epidemic The climax of the Eagles' successful season was a decisive victory over olstein Although the Eagles played every 'home game at Cleghorn and used only the re mslnlng section of the old football field for practice, theboysenjoyed remarkable success Contributing-primarily to this successwss the desire to win The team's determination was never as great as it was this year Guided by one of the best coaches in the stare of Iowa, the Eagles worked hard all season The fans were rewarded with some of the finest blocking, tackling, running, and passing that had been displayed in many years Thirteen boys on the squad were seniors and these boys undoubtedly will be missed next year Numerous members of the squad were placed on honorary football teams Thirteen of the Eagles were selected on the Maple Valley All Conference teams Placed on the first team were Jim Krekow Jerry Briggs, and Ronnie Dorr Placed on the second team were Jerry Weiner, Jim Meyer, Donnie Dorr, Bob Mathern, Orlan Ebert, and Paul Christensen Selected on the Honorable Mention list were Ray Drefke, Kirk Evans, Vernie Johnson, and Harold Seggerman Orlan Ebert, Jim Krekow, and Ronnie Dorr were placed on the All State Honorable Mention list picked by Jack North snortswriter of the Des Moines Register and Tribune Jim Krekow was also placed on the All State Honorable Mention list selected by the Iowa Daily Press Association Ronald Dorr was voted the most valuable player and Jerry Briggs WGS vgtegthe most valuable lineman by their own teammates at a meeting of the football s ua SCORES Marcus 13 12 Sanborn Marcus Correctionville Marcus - Akron Marcus - Movllle Marcus - Cleghorn Marcus - Kingsley Soonsored by Marcus Cancelled.
