Student Council The Student Council of Marcellus Central is one of the most responsible organiza- tions of the school. The four officers are elected by the votes of the students of the junior and senior high in annual elections. The representatives are chosen at the begin- ning of the school year by the individual classes, there being two representatives for each class excepting the senior class which has three council members. During the past year the Student Council has managed a checking service for all home basketball games and also for the night of open house. Tickets to away games have been sold in the halls during the noon hour by the members. The llMarch of Dimes fund and a clothing campaign were successfully organized by the group. Two Halloween parties, one for junior high and one for senior high, were sponsored for the benefit of the students. Annually the Student Council arranges for student announcers. Then in June the council awards the General Achievement letters to students who earn them. Each year at Marcellus, 10 per cent of the Junior Class and 5 per cent of the Senior Class are elected to membership by the faculty. They are chosen on the basis of charac- ter, service, leadership and scholarship. The National Council has set these elements as the four goals toward Which students everywhere should strive. Once a student has been elected to the society, he becomes a life member. Two of these wins with Onondaga Central School were non-league games. The remaining nine games were with opponents in the Onondaga County AB league, three of these were won and six were lost. The team played fine ball to defeat West Genesee, Jamesville-DeWitt and Liverpool. Although the team as a whole didnt do so well, M. C. S. had some good individual efforts. Three boys from Marcellus made honorable mention on the All-County wres- tling team. They were Ronald Amidon, Craig Detwiler, and William O'Hara. A wrestling team is composed of 10 weight classes, ranging from 103 pounds to heavyweight. A pin counts 5 points for the team and a decision scores 3 points. We expect a better record next year inasmuch as Marcellus will have experienced wrestlers returning to school to fill all the weight classes. The Mus- tangs scored 123 points during the season while it held its opponents to 65 points. The first game was a non-league game played with Phoenix, which showed promise of a good season as MCS won 12 t0 6. After losing the first two league games to strong Jamesville-Dewitt and West Genesee teams, the Mustangs were pegged to be the cellar team. Then MCS upset three teams in a row, displaying fine defense as well as offense. The Mustangs started these victories by defeating a highly favored Skaneateles team 19 t0 6. The high spirited team defeated Liverpool 32 t0 0 and East Syracuse 34 to O. The season ended With Fayetteville-Manlius, one of the County co-Champions, edging us out by a score of 7 t0 6. The fine playing of Mert Raner, Tom Schreck, Webb Bartz and David Montag will be missed next year but most of the first string will be returning to fill their spots. Individual players on the Marcellus team were honored in the following manner: Mert Raner was selected as captain and quarterback on the All-County First Team, quarterback 0n the Third All-Central New York Team and honorable mention All- American High School Team. Webb Bartz made the All-County First Team at end. Frank Guenthner was chosen as the center on the All-County Second Team. The boys ended the Onondaga County AB League season with a record of five wins and five losses and therefore were eligible for the County Playoffs. Two non-league games with Elbridge and Onondaga Central were also won. In the first playoff game the Mustangs were pitted against Fayetteville-Manlius and surprised everyone with a stunning upset to the tune of 57-43. In the final playoff game the Mustangs played West Genesee, who had previously beaten them twice. With a strong defense and slow-down offensive tactics, we put up a great battle but were defeated 42-38. We, at Marcellus, are very proud of the naming of Mert Raner to first team All-County and Paul Campbell, Torn Schreck and Archie Beare to Honorable Mention. Graduating from this year's squad are Mert Raner, Tom Schreck, Webb Bartz and Bill Patterson. Returning will be Archie Beare, Paul Campbell, Jerry Harkness, Phil Thrall, Dave Driver and Joe Thorpe. This gives promise for a good season next year. Junior Varsity Basketball This yeafs J.V. team, due to inexperience, failed to find a winning combination throughout the season. Even with this handicap the squad took three of their twelve games by fine individual playing. The team improved with each game and started the second half of the season by de- feating Jamesville-DeWitt. Although the last four games were lost, noticeable improve- ment was shown by the whole team. In the last game of the season against Skaneateles the boys showed good teamwork and a fine display of talent. This yeafs well drilled J.V. team will help to fill the vacant spots on next year's varsity.
