T176 1957 Marcellicm Pwsented by Tlae Junior Class Of Marcellus Centml S cboal Marcellus, New Ymk Foreword In presenting the 1957 Marcellian, the Junior Class sees The World as a Stage. We realize in doing so, that no production was ever given without producers and directors. They are represented here by our administration and faculty. To present our classes and activities we have used major Broadway plays of the past and present. x Awkx N V? $ wAmxxmx ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES MUSIC SPORTS ADVERTISING Administration Supervising Principal CHESTER S. S tudem C ozmcil We at Marcellus are proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Student Council. The Student Council organization was accomplished in the 1946-47 school year. In 1947, as in every year since, voting machines have been used by the student body to choose the officers. The first election was held in the spring of 1947. Through the years the list of presidents are as follows: Edward Bailey ............................................ 1947- 1 948 Ronald Ackles ............................................ 1 948- 1 949 Kay Hayes .................................................. 1949-1950 Dorothy Goodfellow .................................. 1 950- 195 1 Nancy Olney ................................................ 1951-1952 David Olmsted ............................................ 1952-1953 John Coyne ................................................ 1953-1954 John Bednarski .......................................... 1954-195 5 John Woods ................................................ 1955-1956 William Morgan ........................................ 1956-1957 During the present school year the Student Council ran a clothing drive for the Hun- garian refugees. Three new clothes racks were purchased for use at various evening affairs at school. The Student Council took over the operation of these during the home bas- ketball games and the senior play. Another project was the distributing of bus reservation tickets for the out-of-town league and playoff games. PRESENT OF F ICERS William Morgan .......................................... Since this was the first for many junior varsity players, they did not get off to a very successful start. The team did not achieve 'a Victory until the fifth game when they edged out West Genesee in a close 19-18 win. Although strOng improvement was shown, the following six games resulted in losses. Then, however, the boys completed the season in grand style by defeating Jordan, East Syracuse and Jamesville-DeWitt. This gives promise for a fair season next year when these players will join the only varsity holdovcrs, Mert Raner and Archie Beare. Thomas Schrcck was the leading scorer with 118 points. RANER 19 5 6 C bampiom Resuming their second year of eleven man football, the Mustangs were undefeated all season. Their perfect record Of wins was marred only by a tie in the Jamesville-DeWitt game. Steadily the team exhibited expert offense and defense playing, excellent sportsmanship and the determination to win. Both Jim Brenneman's line-backing and Kennie Mace's speed and break away running throughout the season were a great contribution to the squad. joe Delaney helped to put the team through a number of times. Especially by his runs to gain yardage in the final scoring drive at Fayetteville-Manlius and his expeijt blocking of the extra point in the Jamesville-DeWitt game. Joe's interception of the ball and Jim Schuyler's deflection insured the Victory over East Syracuse. Paul Martin aided with his plunging drives, especially in the game with Fuyetteville-Mzmlius. Tom Scheck's scoring against Jamesville-DeWitt was perhaps the most vital touchdown 0f the season. Mert Raner and Billy Glover were both chosen for first string All-County football Billy displayed excellent ability to snare passes and to play in the backfields 0f the opposing teams. Mert led the team as quarterback and scored many points after touchdowns; especially the one which was the winning point made in the Closing minutes of the inyetteville-Mzmlius game. a WWW , l b i i . The boys ended the regular season with eleven wins and one defeat to become All-County Champions. In the county AB league playoffs M. C. S. defeated Skaneateles but was edged out by North Syracuse in an overtime game. Possessing the title of All-County AB Champions, the Mustangs were eligible to compete in the sectionals. In the first playoff, the squad slid by Onondaga Valley Academy in a close 63-60 victory. This game displayed the great determination and drive of this seasonIs varsity. In the second and third sectional games the boys did it twice by whipping Auburn. in a 69-59 battle and Oswego 60-51. These games gave the Mustangs the Syracuse-Water- town area sectional championship. Vying for the Section III Championship in the War Memorial, M. C. S. suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Little Falls, champions of the Oneida-Utica area, 62-61. I mfersclyool Playdays A new game, speed-a-way, was introduced to the girls participating in athletics last fall. Speed-a-way is a combination of soccer, basketball, hockey and speedball. It is a fast and tricky game that permits the ball to be kicked or carried. There were three inter-school speed-a-way games during the season. Two played against Baldwinsville and one each against Fayetteville-Manlius and Tully. In basketball the girls beat Solvay to the tune of 30-9 and also Jordan 20-0. However, Marcellus also suffered two close defeats. One at Baldwinsville, with the final score being 18-16, and one with Skaneateles, in which Skaneateles scored -15 points and Mar- cellus 1 2. Return games with Baldwinsville and Skaneateles were scheduled for late March. The highlight of the inter-school activities this year was the continuous, but friendly, rivalry between Marcellus and Baldwinsville. First row: Virginia Stone, Susan Wray, Sandra Thompson, Judith Hemenway, Sharon Clarry, Barbara Carpenter. Second row: Mary Ellen Guenthner, Karen Annable, Kristin Spaulding, Mary Jane Fitting, Linda Groeling, Alberta Lounsbury, Miss Louise Richardson. Third row: Melissa Christensen, Beverly Cathers, Dale Sawtell, Sharon Loomis, Jane Leach, Kath- leen Gleason, Mryna McDemic, Linda Lyons.
