N ational H onor Society One of the highest honors that a Marcellus Central School student can attain is to be elected to the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a nation- wide organization founded in 1921. The Marcellus chapter was formed in 1948. Each year the faculty elects five per cent of the Senior class and ten per cent of the J unior class to this organization. These students, who must be in the upper third of their class, are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service and character. B and The Marcellus Central School Concert and Marching Band, resplendent With new uniforms, has completed one of the most active seasons in its seventeen years as an organization. An Amateur Show, sponsored by the band, a band concert, and proceeds from the two nights of the Spring Concert early in 1955 made the ordering of new uni- forms possible. These arrived in time for school Opening in the fall. In State Competition at Ithaca, the band received its fifth consecutive 5A5 rating from the judges, stamping it as one of the finest organizations of the state. Early in the summer, the band successfully defended its title as best band in Onondaga County in competition at Minoa in the Second Annual County Band Festival. A prize of $100 and a trophy were presented to the band. During the summer, the marching band continued its string of undefeated com- petition appearances by taking first prize in all events entered. Perhaps the most outstanding of these victories was won at DeRuyter in competition with several outstanding marching organizations. Other appearances were at Liverpool, Taunton, Minoa, Howlett Hill, and Skaneateles. In the fall, music for the Nancy Bishop Day Parade was supplied by the marching band. Following this, the football season was in full swing with half time shows presented by the band at home games. Trips for the band during the 1955-56 school year included a program at the new West Genesee High School and one at the William Nottingham High School in Syracuse. Also on the itinerary was the County festival at West Genesee, and the State Contest at Central Square. This year the band is entering state competition in Grade 6, the most difficult grading in the State Manual. The home programs included the Christmas Concert which featured a number arranged for band, Mixed Choir, Glee Club, and 5B,, Club, and the Annual Spring Concert. Varsity Basketball Because of the reduced number of schools in the county, due to the recent centralization of some schools, the county league was changed to two divisions. The former arrange- ment of Eastern, Central and Western leagues was changed to AB and CD divisions. Although they traveled in much faster com- pany this year, the Varsity did very well. M.C.S. beat our old rival, Skaneateles, twice as well as West Genesee in both games. We split our series with Jamesville-Dewitt, Bald- winsville and Fayetteville-Manlius, losing twice only to East Syracuse, who ultimately became county champions. Junior Varsity Basketball The 1955-56 Jay-Vees, playing what was probably one of the toughest schedules ever faced by an M.C.S. J.V. team, just broke even. Although this record did not qualify them for the playoffs, the Junior Varsity developed two consistent scorers in Lysle Bas- sett and Bob Snyder and an aggressive back- court man in Tom Schreck. The J ay Vees were consistent in their play this year, beating Jamesville-Dewitt, Skanea- teles and East Syracuse twice each and losing to West Genesee, Fayetteville-Manilus and Baldwinsville twice each. The Jay Vees this year were a strongly united team and like all Coach Mathe9s teams, they were soundly coached. Lysle' Bassett was the team,s leading scorer with a 166-point total.
