HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS From that memorable day 1n September 1942 when we stood 1n the h1gh school halls were ha1led as The Fresh1es and wondered where ln the vast bu1ld1ng we belonged our class 1n spxte of 1ts small SIZE has been a leader ln act1v1t1es sports and scholar sh1p Durxng our freshrnan year Robert E ngel hard and Bob Zurcher lettered 1n football and Robert Englehard lettered 1n bas ketball Dorls Chrlsman was kllled 1n an automobxle accxdent Our f1r st formal dance theme was STARDUST At the begmnlng of the sophomore year a change was made 1n the fac ulty Francls Sm1th res1gned as mus1c mstructor and was replaced by Leonard Grlffm At the end of the semester Mr GrLff1n was replaced by H B Newkam. As sophomores we conducted the consesslons for the basketball tournament Se veral boys lettered both m football and basketball Mar1anne Metzger and Wanda Wampler won several orator1cal contests and Pr1nc1pal L E Phelps Jolned the navy 1n the sprlng He was replaced byj O Wlllramson Dale Hazlett trans ferred to Marcehne from Bowllng Green When we were Jumors several changes aga1n were made 1n the faculty Page Pendleton re sxgned as football and basketball coach and was replaced by J O Wrlhamson M1ss Lura McN1sh took over the sc1ence departznent Gladys V1sser1ng transferred from Morton Il11no1s Naoml Stanley aSS1Sta-nt ed1tor of the Marcello took over edltor sh1p of the yearbook 1n the absence of the edltor due to 1llness Mar1anne Metzger was ed1tor of T1 er Tales The banquet glven for t.he semors was a great success Theme was Candy and the aud1tor1um was beautlfully decorated ln red and Whlte senlor colors The junlor play Irlsh Stew was wr1tten by member of the class Mar1anne Metzger and pre sented 1n March and drew a large crowd Bob Zurcher rece1ved the D1etr1ch Medal for scholar sh1p and athletlcs Eugene F1ala presented the paddle to Rob ert Engelhard Members of the class partlclpated 1n sports mus1c contests and festxvals and dramatlcs jerry Flynn Norbert Owens Joanne Mlller and Cath er1ne Owens transferred from the Cathohc School The semor year found us well 1nto the lead among the classes Bob Zur cher was named Conference Co captaln Bob Zurcher and Robert I1.n elhard were football captalns Red Holt was basketball captaln Naoma Stanley edltor of Marcello Marranne Metzger edltor of T1ger Tales and Gladys V1sser1ng pre S1 dent of the Razzer or gan1z.at1on Semor queen Dorothy Santus placed second ln the Carn1val Norma K1llen transferred from Needles Cal1forn1a Dale Hazlett was elected pres1dent of the band for the second year and Don Wootten was stu dent dlrector Semor Robert Engelhard was Manager 1n Ch1ef of the carnlval Senlors were aCt1Ve 1n band glee club razzers and gave a play for the carn1 val The sen1or play The Maddest Professlon was wrltten by Mar1anne Metzger and presented May 10 From fu' st to last the smallest class 1n the h1gh school the senlors have always had 10 v of the class on the honor roll Wlth a h1gher percentage than that of any other class Out of the or1g1nal group that entered h1gh school 1n September 194-Z only th1rty elght are left Some members that are gone are jerry Martln Col leen Braley Sh1rley Easley Madel1ne Hall jack1e Murray Pearl Dorrell jew ell Dorrell Don Cordray George K1tchen Robert Fl1ck1nger Harold Sod Snowden Roy Holt and john Hungate Z5 1 1 . as . 11 - 1 1 1 1 1 . . . . .
