M H S CARNIVAL Darnp weather and showers d1dn t d1scourage townspeople students and faculty when It threatened to keep thern from turn1ng out for the Marce l1ne H1gh School carn1val March 15 16 A hall Jammlng crowd was present both n1ghts to play blngo buy at the country store throw darts throw balls at rrulk bottles flsh 1n the f1sh pond prance xn the cake walk check at the check room eat 1n the eats room dance 1n the tax1 dance buy novelt1es at the novelty stand and attend the programs occurzng every hour 1n the aud1 tor1um AdIfl1SS10H to all programs was two f1ve cent tlckets and usually the audltorlum was packed to capaclty Nlrs B111 Stonger s klndergarten gave the f1r st performance Fr1day evenlng wxth a Doll Weddlng wh1ch was well l1ked The Central School pre sentatlon lncluded several clever acts The jun1or h1gh 'Follles of 1946 was a PTCCISIOH tap dance and song It M1ght As Well Be Sprlng by e1ghtJun1or h1gh g1r ls who showed real ab1l1ty ln the1r 1nterpretat1on of the flne number Truth or Consequences' Wlth B111 Stonger as Master of Ceremon 1es was the 8 30 show Best consequence was pa1d by jerry Flynn and Har old Haney A one act play The Clty Slxcker and Our Nell was presented by settnngs emphaslzed the old-fashxoned melodrama The play ended the aud1tor1um act1v1t1es for the evenxng Draw1ngs were made for the door pr1zes and for a cake raffled off by the freshrnen for the1r queen un1or Gordon won the f1r st door pr1ze S3 50 1n rnerchan d1se at Burch s Market and Mrs A M W1ll1an won second a p1cture Wayne Couch won the cake Saturday evenlng the program began w1th numbers by Park School At 7 30 Pheeny a one act play by Mar1anne Metzger was g1ven by s1x sen1ors members of last year s dramatlcs class It concerned the tr1als and trlbulatlons of a 16 year old would be female plumber and elec tr1c1an After th1s was a program under the d1rect1on of A Anderson prln clpal of L.1ncoln the colored school A muslc l prograrn was presented by the muslc department under the d1rect1on of C C llulen F'1rst was two numbers by the band then one by the g1rls glee club followed by a solrano solo by Gladys V1sser1ng and a p1ano solo Hazel V1sser1ng lhe faculty program at 10 30 brought down the house lt was a d1a logue by M1ss Belle Horn concerrung her farruly album As she de scrmbed her varlous relatlves the curtams would open reveal1ng a huge p1cture frame In the frame were the characters descr1bed as portrayed by faculty members It was very clever and was enjoyed by everyone Tlus was followed by a short sklt by Don Wootten and Dale Hazlett 91 . F' F A BARNWARMING The 1nv1tat1ons for the barnwarmlng November 16 were made of corn husks tled together at the end The 1nv1ta11on was on a p16C6 of paper 1ns1de the husks The barnwarmmg started at emght o clock To get 1ns1de the gymnas mm one had to go through a tunnel made of baled straw One mad to go up a ladder and go through a wagon bed that was ly1ng on top of the baled straw Steps were made of bales of straw to the floor E1ght games or h1tches were played w1th a d1fferent partner for each ln the f1r st h1tch two boys scattered peanuts over the floor and the couple that got the most won The second h1tch was a mllk bottle race Each couple had to hold hands and roll the mllk bottle across the floor w1th two stlcks The thlrd h1tCh was d1V1ded 1nto two groups Each one had to hold the rlght hand of the per son sltting next to hlm They they had to pass a number of sprkes along the l1ne w1t.hout lettlng go In the fourth h1tch the couples had to hold hands and shuck an ear of corn The players w-ho got throughflr st won Next shps of paper were passed out that had the name of an an1mal prxnted on them and each person had to 1m1tate the ammal that was wrxtten on h1s shp of paper The games contmued to the e1ghth h1tch and then refreshments were served whlch were 1ce cream and cookxes The Judge chose Mary Lou Spencer as the barnwarmlng queen Fr1day November 30 the flrst all school soc1al of the year was held 1n the M H S audltorlum sponsored by the senlor class The theme for the decoratlon chosen by the semors was that of the trlumphant return of the bell Multl colored crepe paper streamers formed a false ce1l1ng above the heads of the dancers and large placards hung on the curtaln reported the scores of all e1ght games of the season rn black and Whlfli Center of attractlon was the bower of black and gold crepe paper hung from the basketball goal at the north end of the audltorlum Wlllh black and gold streamers covering backetball mat ln the bower was the wooden steps on each step the name of a T1ger v1ctory and at the top of the steps was the bell On the whlte background beh1nd the steps were the words Co Champ1on Refreshments served Were punch chocolate m1nts and cup cakes JUNIOR DANCE At the all school soc1al Frlday February 22 sponsored by the mem bers of the Jumor class the theme was the favor1te events ln the hie of George Wash1ngton On the curtaln was hung an Amer1can flag at each endof the aud 1tor1u1r1 was placed the green scenery and 1n the center of the dance floor was carr1ed out the story of George havlng cut down the cherry 11-ee Most of the g1rls were seen w1th a red hatchet adorn1ng the1r su1ts and the name of thelr one and only on lt Refreshments of double d1p 1ce cream cones wlth a cherry on top were served 90 SENIOR DANCZ . . , . . the . , ll . il ' '

After thls Mr Phelps d lwlr C 1X al auctloned off a ton of co lcon trlbuted by Frank Gucker At 10 45 was the event eagerly d11llL.lIB.t6d by everyone connected vt 1th any of the classes The Carnlx al Queen x crowned All classes had vsork ed llke lnad ln the days precedlng the carnlval to earn money for thelr can dldates Rummage sales bake sales and the sale of tags helped mount up scores The four candldates came down the center alsle wlth llttle jamce Co well carrylng the crown They marched up on the stage where the throne and four chalrs had been placed Dorothy Santus senlor queen was lovely 1n a pale blue and black formal Shlrley Wlgglns pet1teJunlor wore whlte net trlmmed wxth red and whlte checked taffeta Norma Santus represented the sophomores ln a Dale plllk formal that set off her halr and dark eyes Norma Slaughter fre shrnan looked very pretty ln whlte net trlmmed ln gold. The audltorlum was hushed as Carnlval Manager Robert Engelhard 1 ead the names of the candldatles and the number of votes for each Norma Santus Dorothy Santus Norma Slaughter and Shlrley Wlgglns Altogether the votes totaled approxlmately S300 OO Norma walked Slowly up the steps and sat on the throne She was crowned by her slster Dorothy The crown was a lovely creatlon corn pletely covered wlth plnk sweet peas Norma made a beautlful queen She was presented an arm bouquet of yellow roses by Don Wootten and Vklth a half of the carnlval comm1ttee The sophomores deserve much credlt or the flne work they dld The senlors also de serve much credlt for they have the slnalle st class ln M H S All classes worked hard Wlth the queen relgnlng t.he last events of the carnlval were brought qulckly to a close Wlll S1111 conducted a drawlng for two cakes the fresh mfn class raffled Wlnners were lvlrs Chrlstlne Metzger and O E Dovxn lng Door prlze of a palr of nylons was won by Bud Penderson Lorna une announced the number of beans ln the Jar and the vtlnner was Neva Lamb The Tru Tone radlo on whlch chances were sold was won by lwhss Pretty llazlett A grand total of S700 O0 was earned for school lmprovements xx hlch only goes to show what can be done when students faculty townspeople and merchants work ln complete cooperatlon SENIOR DAY 1' rlday Aprll 12 the senlor class spent the day ln Klrksvllle as guest of the K1IkSV1116 State Teachers College Thls annual event was attended by twenty one hundred senlors from hlgh schools all over northeast Mlss ourl The program ln Klrk Audltorlum began at 10 30 Wlth openlng remarks by la orrest L Crooks Dlrector of Fleld SCTVICG Pre sldent Walter H Ryle extended greeungs Thls was followed by flve selectlons by the college band Several numbers were presented by the rnen s quartet fronu the col legfi The address was glven by Roe Bal tle an attorney from Kansas Clty 92 ' . an .
