However Sandy saud that w couldnt tune un on a few rooms be cause the teachers were busy Among These was lubraruan Duanne Dunstan un conference wuth Bull Dus tun pruncupal Jay Henderson had left orders un the offuce that hus spuruted Democracy un Actuon class could not be dusturbed for any rea son Reg Hartley who had settled down from an Induanapolus cham puon to the posutuon of Druver Educa tuon teacher was beung vusuted by Luz Carey the druvung commussuoner of Massachusetts who had the best record yet The school bus system has Increased greatly sunce Bradlee Nuckerson became a druver and the manager Also Dale Osgood has developed a student bus trup o weekends between Marblehead and Exeter Jean Mautland organuzed a dauly shuttle from Marblehead to Swampscott whuch I decuded to fol ow Floatung along I entered a large unfamuluar umpressuve buuldung where I read on a bronze plaque that thus scuentufuc laboratory and planetaruum had been establushed by Roger Cruff who also donates scholarshups to hugh school scuence students Under the plaque was a bust of Stephen Gauss under whose durectuon the laboratory had acquured a good deal of publuc esteem Elaune Armstrong Steves secretary goes on tours demonstratung the useful work of the laboratory Through her lectures Larry Levune learned atomuc physucust was attracted to the re search center Outsude the planetaruum Aluce Puerce hauled me and unvuted me to the Mary Alley Hosputal where she was supervusor of the staff Aluce took me to the wards where nurse Judy Wood had performed a muracle when she took sole care of Tum Pressey who was hurt whule tryung to beat Karun Stueglutz up Mount Everest on hus motor scooter Work ung un the research laboratory was Dave Merrull famous for hus product Sulfatethozypyrutuzune a preven tuon agaunst unfectuon from snappung turtle butes Busuly followung us to all the wards was Carol Goldberg physucal therapust who strongly urged everyone to do exercuses each mornung Between pushups Carol unformed me that several members of the class of 59 had admunustra tuve posutuons un Abbot Hall Followung the telephone wures to ward Abbot Hall I overtook a man un a dark coat long beard and hat pulled over hus eyes Close unspec tuon revealed thus mysteruous char acter to be John Lynch edutor of the lovelorn column of the Marblehead Messenger who had been ordered by edutor Sue Sadoff not to return wuthout some confudentual utems I flew John wuth me the rest of the 65 way to Abbot Hall where Glorua Spatz ran out of her offuce and wouldnt let us advance wuthout proof that we had paud thus years taxes John hurruedly left whule I escaped unto the studuo where Les Goodwun to commemorate the an nuversary of the Spurut of 76 was posung for the modern day versuon for artust Steve Goodwun Apparent ly Steve was too busy to notuce me for two strokes of blue paunt blunded me and I flapped rught unto Aluce Lemueux Matron of Abbot Hall who quuckly cleaned me up and went back to patrollung the rest of the buuldung Outsude Abbot Hall were Davud Goluck and Muke Goloboy op eratung a Daru Whup concessuon whuch featured theur specual Truple Dup Puneapple Nut Treat My map showed that the next stop on the Hustoruc Traul was the beautuful Mansuon House whuch had become famous agaun when an ec centruc mulluonaure had engaged owner and enguneer Ted Gray to desugn a home lust luke thus un the colonual style Consultung my map I was pleased to fund the Lee Mansuon former resudence of a merchant prunce the next stop on my agenda I declded agaunst takung a short cut when I crashed unto a poster lustung the numerous characterustucs whuch qualu fued Peter Mules for the key posutuon of governor of Massachusetts Pete had promused to cut the state debt un half un one week Stunned from the blow I turned and ran rught unto the face of Joe McKane on a I . e . . . 6544477 I am the SpIrIt of the Class of 1959 Each student of the class has contrIbuted to my GXISISHCS and I In turn am InstIlled In each of them Today I am followIng both Marble head s famous old hIstorIcal traIl and the newer traII blazed by the mem bers of my class At the expanded Abbott PublIc LIbrary Anne Hernon who has achIeved her ambItIon as head II brarIan helped me to fInd In the current book sectIon many unfor gettable books wrntten by members of the Class of 59 The most notable gaIn for the posternty of all Engllsh speakIng people was donated as a gIft by MarItIna Teran who trans lated a set of Spamsh classlcs IUIO EnglIsh Anne Introduced me to Tom DIrectors at Abbott PublIc Llbrary and also author of the technIcal work on the care and feedIng of wIld mIce Tommy was extremely proud to say that hIs lIbrary had been the fIrst to obtaIn the exclusIve edItIon of the research papers of Judy WhIte and Sue Warner who have fInaIly succeeded In confIrm Ing the Pythagorean Theory DecIdIng to leave I glIded toward the nearest wall where a beautIful dlsplay of butterflIes and rare mIn erals stopped me short and I read that Jerry Caswell a noted geologIst was dIsplayIng them here on popu lar demand Under Jerrys dIsplay a few famIlIar names caught my eye An attractively decorated book proved to be that of Albert Horgan on a much needed sublect IOI Short Cuts to EasIer LIvIng Thousands of Amerlcan women gladly recelved MarcIa Lefavours volume The lm portance of a Well Rounded Dlet whule the latest edItIon of Joan PekIns handbook for housewIves How to Control Your TensIons was lust beIng placed on the shelf Kathy GllllS dIssertatIons on the state of world affaurs occupIed a place of honor on the top shelf As I was drIftIng through the door Tommy poInted out Josene Stephens curled up asleep after havmg read every book In the Lubrary CarrIed wIth the wmd I found myself on the well remembered way to MHS Seelng a famnllar face stopped to watch Charlle ArbIng Iumplng out of hIs Sunoco ServIce hIs expenslve clothes On Inquury CharlIe Informed me that he owned the fleet of trucks but he lIked to QIVS hIs customers hIs personal at tentlon CharlIe poInted out BIII Crabtrees auto repaIr shop whIch IS so well known and effIcIent that cars from all over the globe arrIve every day As the strong wlnd carrled me further along I dnscovered bIcyclIng underneath me was KarIn STIBQIIIZ who remlnded me that she was the fIrst person to pedal up Mt Everest I arrIved at the HIgh School Iust In tIme for the long awaIted vIolIn and plano concerts gIven by Judy RabIn and Judy Ross respectIveIy JackIe Frost now head of the ITIUSIC department at Marblehead recog nIzed me and Informed me that the 64 only reason these busy musIcIans had consented to perform was to help the AFS A nostalgIa for the hugh school compelled me to look around the scene of so many happy memorIes Before I left the audI toruum next weeks program was announced AVIS Cohen skIIlful poodle traIner and Lorralne Eld rIdge emInent star of the Metro polItan Opera would gIve a benefIt show for Shella Connellys Rat Re habIlItatIon Center In the corrIdors MarcIa Faney dlS tractedly ran through me absorbed Wllh her problems as Sponsor of the Vouce of Democracy contest How ever she took tIme out to warn me about Sue Foy who IS rumored to sneak stealthIly along M HS corrI headss powerful football team to QIVS to her natIve Swampscott In Splle of MarcIa s warnIng however when Sue cordIally offered to show me the rooms where many of our former classmates are teachers I couldnt resust Passlng by the gym Sue proudly poInted out the extensIve apparatus wIth whIch PhysIcal EducatIon teach er PrIscIlla Sawyer had buIlt up Marbleheads reputatIon as the best such department In the UnIted States At the school OffICS Sandy Flachbart connected us wIth typIng expert Karen MurchIson who ex plaIned her new techmque In the FamIly RelatIons class Sandy e plaIned that teacher Jud Palmer had Invuted LIanne Clark marrIage coun selor to address all of hIs classes I 1 ' . - . , .
