When Dr. Edward Gates began teaching at Marathon High School in 1977, he had already retired once, from a successful career in medicine. Dr. Gates, who once trained medical students, turned to teaching high school chemistry because, used to being active, he found the forced relaxation of retirement boring. Dr. Gates retired again this year and left the Keys for Florida's West Coast. I'm going to miss teaching here, he said. I've had a lot of intelligent kids. Given Dr. Gates' past retirement history, we don't doubt that some intelligent kids on the West Coast will be enjoying the benefits of Dr. Gates' experience and expertise before long. Top Right: Dr. Edward Cates — Science and Math Chairman, Calculus, Physics, Physical Science, Adv. Computer Science, Chemistry I Hon. Above: Miss Katherine McLane — English IV, Writing II. Above Right: Mrs. Violet Saenz — Middle School office clerk. Right: Mr. Jerry McCurry — World History, Orientation to American Industry. 12 FACULTY

Mrs. Eunice Stout, who taught English, writing, speech and composition this year, retired after twenty years at Marathon High. I've thoroughly loved teaching here, she said. I'm only sorry that it is time to move on. Mrs. Stout planned to take advantage of her free time to travel to Australia to visit her family. When asked what she would miss the most about teaching, Mrs. Stout replied, I will miss the students most, and the love that they give. I will also miss being able to watch them grow from young children into responsible young adults. Top Right: Mrs. Eunice Stout — English I, Writing I.
