Chanae Campus Gets a New Look While students and teachers enjoyed their summer vacations, county maintenance crews were hard at work in Marathon. The School Board's decision to establish a separate middle school on the high school campus meant that E- wing had to be completely renovated, and created the biggest job. Room E-9, formerly a classroom, became the office for Marathon Middle School's principal, Joe Orr, and teacher aide Terri Brand. Rooms were painted, air conditioners were repaired, and the hallway was fit- ted out with new bulletin boards and reconditioned lockers. Middle school students traveled to and from school on their own busses, directly from the end of E-wing. The extension of sidewalk roofing from E-wing to the science wing was welcomed by both students and teachers who no longer had to get wet changing classes on rainy days. The most noticeable change on campus was the sodding of the areas between A, B, C and D wings. Bare, dusty areas that had for years been used by students as shortcuts, outdoor lunch areas and playgrounds were sud- denly lush and green, and inspired students to stick to the sidewalks — a first for Marathon! The new changes on campus were quickly adjusted to by the student body, who soon treated them as if they had been around for years. 4 Opening

Change Time Out for Study A new addition to the daily schedule at Marathon's high school and middle school was a thirty-minute study hall. The Superintendent hoped students would use this time to work on their studies and improve their academic standing. Although many students did take good advantage of the extra time to study for tests or get their homework out of the way during the regular school day, some regarded it as a welcome break in the long, seven-period day. Study hall gave these students an oppor- tunity to socialize with their classmates, catch up on their reading, or just relax and put aside the pressures of the academic day for a few minutes. 6 Opening
