Time fer a Change= Shoreline 1980 — Marathon Florida — Dedication Ms. Katherine McLane Dear Ms. McLane, The 1986 Shoreline staff is honored and pro- ud to dedicate our book to you. Your academic achievements and your devotion to your students have not gone without recognition. We are sure that the students you have taught have enjoyed the opportunity they've had to get to know you and to learn from you. Your understanding of your students and your eagerness to help them seem endless. We know that the decision to go back to school after eight years of teaching was a dif- ficult one. Our loss was the University of Florida's gain. It couldn't have been easy — attending classes, conducting seminars, and holding down not one, but two, part-time jobs didn't leave you much time to study. Yet you achieved your Master's degree with a straight A average. We are proud of you! For these reasons and more, Ms. McLane, we dedicate the 1986 Shoreline to you. 2 Dedication Dedication 3 Chanae Campus Gets a New Look While students and teachers enjoyed their summer vacations, county maintenance crews were hard at work in Marathon. The School Board's decision to establish a separate middle school on the high school campus meant that E- wing had to be completely renovated, and created the biggest job. Room E-9, formerly a classroom, became the office for Marathon Middle School's principal, Joe Orr, and teacher aide Terri Brand. Rooms were painted, air conditioners were repaired, and the hallway was fit- ted out with new bulletin boards and reconditioned lockers. Middle school students traveled to and from school on their own busses, directly from the end of E-wing. The extension of sidewalk roofing from E-wing to the science wing was welcomed by both students and teachers who no longer had to get wet changing classes on rainy days. The most noticeable change on campus was the sodding of the areas between A, B, C and D wings. Bare, dusty areas that had for years been used by students as shortcuts, outdoor lunch areas and playgrounds were sud- denly lush and green, and inspired students to stick to the sidewalks — a first for Marathon! The new changes on campus were quickly adjusted to by the student body, who soon treated them as if they had been around for years. 4 Opening Opening 5 Change Time Out for Study A new addition to the daily schedule at Marathon's high school and middle school was a thirty-minute study hall. The Superintendent hoped students would use this time to work on their studies and improve their academic standing. Although many students did take good advantage of the extra time to study for tests or get their homework out of the way during the regular school day, some regarded it as a welcome break in the long, seven-period day. Study hall gave these students an oppor- tunity to socialize with their classmates, catch up on their reading, or just relax and put aside the pressures of the academic day for a few minutes. 6 Opening Opening 7 Change More Credits Needed When students returned to Marathon High School in August, they were faced with an increase in graduation re- quirements from 25 to 26. Language arts credits grew from four to six; science was increased to three; social studies doubled from two to four; and a new physical education requirement, life managament skills and personal fitness, was added. An additional requirement of one-half credit in performing fine arts added two new courses to the cur- riculum — drama and dance. Dance class exposed students to dance as a creative art form through instruction in a variety of dance forms. Drama used dramatic exercises and on-stage acting experiences to make students more aware of themselves and more familiar with the dramatic form in literature. 8 Opening Opening 9 Seniors................................. 12 Classes..................................$6 Juniors............................... 38 Sophomores............................ 42 Freshmen.............................. 46 Student Life............................ 50 Athletics..............................52 Organizations........................ 100 Activities........................... 114 Faculty................................ 126 Index...................................132 10 High School Time fer a Chanae Marathon High School 12 Seniors Seniors Introducing 14 Seniors • • • the class cf ’86 Seniors 15 Senior Ron Abuja josc Arquez Tcri Armstrong Bruce Antetomaso Richard Baro David Batson Kim Bittner Hooper Cassidy Lisa Coppotelli Raymond Cucchi Lisa Delano Elfie Fassel Ion Graber Julie Graber Scott Gutterman Gregg Hammond Ann Marie Harold Greg Harris Howard Hayes Bill Herd leanette Holmes David Irwin Leslie Johnson Shane Johnson Lucinda Jones Rita Jones Shannon Kelly Billy Keys Kara King Tommy Krause John Lamantia Jennifer Lazarowicz Eric Lazenby Jon Lewis Leslie Magner Collin McGarry Tina McNeal Mike Moore Kim Narenkivicius Gene Nearns Susan O'Neil Tim O'Rourke Tammy Paul Robert Perrin Tony Putz Kelly Qualls Kim Rabito Lisa Rice Barbara Rodriguez Jackie Smith Donnie Smyth Rodney Stiltner Kevin Tate Cindy Tizziani Richard Turner Barbarina Van Lcth Bill Vasquez Tom Voss Hans Wagner Mike Westbrook Meghan Whitehall Cindy Willhoite Happines Is ... Seniors 35 36 Classes Classes If someone observed a junior class study hall, he'd wonder how it got its name. A typical junior spent as much time in study hall talking as studying. After study hall, he walk- ed down the halls, decked out in his OP duds, on his way to American History. Once there, Joe Junior would listen atten- tively to Mr. Keeney, his favorite teacher. At 3:25 school ended and all the fun began. Joe Junior hopped into his favorite car, the Mustang, and either partied, played sports, or listened to music. Wherever he cruised, the sounds of his favorite groups. Van Halen and Led Zep- pelin, could be heard. On Saturday afternoon during football season, Joe Junior was glued to the tube watching his favorite team, the University of Florida Gators. Throughout the year, Joe Junior could oe found doing his various junior jobs — selling magazines to raise money for class expenses, picking the Homecoming theme, working on his class's Humpty Dumpty float, or organizing the prom. Despite SAT's, state tests and in- creased credit requirements, the juniors were determined to enjoy the year. Not satisfied with being the second highest class, the juniors were determined to end the year as Marathon's 1 class. They were one of the few classes to actually spend most of their time in study hall studying, usually working on their compositions for writing class. In their spare time sophomores listened to their favorite song, Money for Nothing, by Dire Straits, or their favorite group, Motley Crue. Sophomores could usually be found socializing with their friends on the beach or at Coco Plum while they munched on pizza and Doritos. The well-dressed sophomores usually wore Levis or Ocean Pacific. On Saturday mornings, before they went to the beach, sophomores relaxed at home with Bugs Bunny, their favorite cartoon. Sophomores got really involved in Homecoming with their London Bridge float. Guided by Head Coach Bill Sympson and Assistant Coach Ralph Gentry, the Dolphins posted the best record in the school's twenty-nine year history, suf- fering their only loss to the Curley Knights. In addition to the 8-1 season finish, the team also set several big school records. Defensively, they allowed their opponents to score only 75 points against them, the fewest points ever scored against any Dolphin squad in a season. Offensive- ly, running back Troy Campbell exceeded the existing rushing record by 500 yards, rushing over 1500 yards in nine games; he also broke the leading scorer record (74 points) by ending the season with a total of 100 points to his credit. Other highlights of the season were Marathon's first-ever victory over Pinecrest on the Dolphins' home field, and their first victory over Westminster on the road. Several members of the Dolphin squad received State and Conference recognition for their outstanding perfor- mance on the field. All-State positions went to running back Troy Campbell (first team) and defensive tackle Vernon Goodwin (third team). First team All-Conference honors were awarded to running back Troy Campbell, offensive center Perry Logan, and defensive back Leon Mangham. Defensive end Sky Rockett and linebacker Arthur Davis were named to the All-Conference second team. 52 Varsity Football Left: Coach Sympson attends to an injured Arthur Davis. Everyone had planned for a fun-filled week of celebration. Then Hurricane Kate arrived in mid-week to interrupt the activities. Marathon's students, already geared up for Homecoming, weathered the storm and refused to let Kate dampen their spirit. Although a rainstorm threatened at the start of the an- nual Homecoming parade, blue skies prevailed, and everyone involved had a wonderful afternoon. The spectators who lined the parade route enjoyed the spectacle provided by the band, king and queen can- didates, class and club representatives, and the class floats. Each class put its best efforts into its nursery rhyme theme floats. The senior class entry, Four- and-Twenty Wolverines, won the float competi- tion, followed by the Middle School and Freshman entries, Old Woman in a Shoe and Jack and the Beanstalk, which tied for second place. A New entry in the parade was provided by some of Marathon's alumni, whose Three Little Pigs put the Dolphins' Homecoming game opponent in a stew. Top Left: For the first time. Not even the senior class could out-cheer all those eager and excited seventh and eighth graders. The seniors regained their pride when they took first place in the fence decorating contest, covering their fence area with more posters than all of the other classes combined. The sophomores' effort took second place, and all of the classes enjoyed the challenge of trying to hang posters in the hign winds provided by Hurricane Kate. 60 Homecoming FACING PAGE, Top Left: The freshman fence is burning” hot. Under the direction of head Coach Jim Keeney, however, the Dolphins had a vic- torious season, winning five of tneir eight games. Their only losses came at the hands of Key West and Dade Christian. Coach Keeney gave much of the credit for the squad's winning season to his three assistants, who volunteered their time to help the team. Only three starting players, seniors Tammy Paul, Rita Jones and Julie Graber, returned this year from last year's squad. Returning underclassmen, Allison Cameron, Vicki Costa, Laura Daughtry, Amy Grill and Cheri Warren saw more playing time this year, and rookies, Stephanie Kornetti, Charlott Fisch and Candee Nelms, rounded out the team roster. Overall, the team's 24-7 record indicated a successful season, but Coach Chuck Bayles shared his team's disappointment at being unable to compete further than they did in post-season play. Tammy Paul and Rita Jones have played volleyball for the Lady Dolphins since they entered MHS as seventh graders. They began, as all novices do, on the second team, but they quickly proved themselves on tne court and advanced to starting posi- tions. Both Rita and Tammy contributed greatly to the strength of the Lady Dolphins as setter-hitters throughout their high school careers. Their skill and talent resulted in recognition among the Marathon athletic communi- ty, and earned each of them first-team honors on the Gulfstream All-Conference team in both their junior and senior years. Volleyball 77 Unranked But Not Outclassed The varsity basketball team started off with what showed promise of being a superb year, defeating Pinecrest and Westminster early in the season. Though the season grew tougher as it progressed, the Dolphins managed key wins when needed, and suffered some close losses to their much higher ranked opponents. Handicapped by a lack of depth and experience on the bench, the Dolphin starting five took a lot of the responsibility for holding the team together. As captains, sophomore Paul Davis and junior Austin Nally showed leadership and poise, and helped the team gain in confidence as they gained in experience. The return of Jim Sikora to the head-coach position gave the squad a season- ed mentor who strengthened the team's fundamen- tal skills and taught them more complicated strategies. The team ended the season with a winn- ing record and playing experience that will make a stronger team in seasons to come. Above: Team co-captain, guard — Paul Davis. Varsity Basketball 83 Gaining in Experience The JV squad worked their way through a tough schedule, and worked hard throughout the season to become more skilled players. Each member of the team put forth his best effort, both in games and at practice, and worked to master the skills needed for suc- cess. The experience earned in what proved to be a trying season — with only one win against Mary Immaculate and several close losses to other, more ex- perienced teams — made them all better players: By the end of the season, the en- tire team, especially some of the younger players, got the chance to show their talent and potential. Basketball 87 Getting Better All the Time Guided by coaches Scott Libbey and Ed Gates, the Dolphin tennis team approached its fourth year of play with plans for a victorious season. Returning players Shannon Kelly (team captain), and Candee, Carey and Robbie Nelms gave the team a strong foundation. They were joined by Andy Kebo, Mickey McDowell, Thania Moses, Joe Selah and Melissa Tenorio, all of whom were good players who just needed more tournament experience. The team suffered the same weakness that it had in past years — the lack of a full girls' team. This cost them points in competition, but strong showings by both the boys' team ana the doubles teams improved the Dolphins' standing as the season progressed. It was the concensus of team observers that with more experience. Marathon's tennis team would develop into an ex- cellent one. 88 Tennis Left: Mickey McDowell's determination gives him the winning edge. Tennis 91 Practice, Practice, Practice At exactly 3:45 each afternoon, the Lady Dolphins were on the softball field ready for a day's workout. Head Coach Chuck Bayles met his team with a tim- ed schedule of what would be accomplished at that day's practice. He and Assistant Coach Ted Bartz worked with the girls every day — correcting, praising, teasing and, most importantly, teaching them the importance of discipline and teamwork. The early days of practice were the worst, especial- ly for those players who were not in shape. For these girls, the first few days meant sore muscles, tired eyes, lots of sweat and, occasionally, a few tears. As the days of practice continued, the girls became better acquainted with each other, forming special friendships which bonded them together as a team. They gained an awareness of the field, of the players around them, and of what to expect in game situations. The team's strength came from returning senior pitcher Tammy Paul and the out- fielders, all but one of whom were returning starters from last year's squad. A largely untried in- field squad was the weakest feature of the team, but this became less of a problem as the team gain- ed in experience during the course of the season. 92 Softball J, % FACING PAGE, Top: Head Coach Bayles gives the girls some prac- tice on infield flies while Assistant Coach Bartz takes the catching position. Softball 95 A Change of Leadership was seen on the MHS baseball diamond this year as coaches Gentry and Sympson reversed the roles they played during football season. Ralph Gentry took over as head coach, and he was aided by Bill Sympson as assistant coach. Returning players from last year's squad gave the Dolphins a strong infield, resulting in a strong defensive advantage which would allow very few easy runs during the season. The overall youth and inexperience of the newer members of the team and a lack of power on the mound meant that the Dolphins would not have an easy season, but team members were optimistic ana willing to meet the challenge. They promoted school spirit by selling Dolphin Pride t-shirts, which could be seen all over campus on game days. They gave the classes a chance to prove their athletic prowess on Class Competition Day, and provided would-be rockers the chance to live their dreams in the air band con- cert. Once in- itiated, students were expected to maintain their academic standing with a 3.0 average to remain eligible for membership. Although members had to work hard to keep up their grades, they took time out after school and on weekends to wash cars and sell candy to raise money for a scholarship to be awarded at the end of the year to the Honor Society's most outstanding graduating senior. Organizations 103 Ri “ Marching and Competing took the Marathon High Band all over Florida. From county competition in Key West to state contests in St. Petersburg, the band covered a lot of miles. All of this travel created a great deal of expense and band members worked hard to raise the necessary funds. Director Jay Parales and the band held car washes and bake sales, man- ned concession stands at the Holiday Trade Fair and home basketball games, and sold stadium cushions and t-shirts, working throughout the school year to make ends meet. The club, form- ed by the Busniess and Profes- sional Women to prepare high school girls for careers and give service to both their school and community, raised money for their project through their Homecoming carnation sale and their annual spr- ing fashion show. Organizations 111 To Cover the Year in words and pictures was the goal of the 1986 Shoreline staff. Photographers spent most of their time watching life through the view-finder of a camera, and it took many frustrating hours of work and innumerable rewrites to come up with just the right layouts, copy and captions to report the year's events. Staffers spent hours pounding the pavement to sell ads to finance the largest portion of the yearbook's $12,000 budget. All the effort was rewarded when the book finally arrived, and everyone could breathe a huge sigh of relief. Top Right: Vivian Chisolm is the Shoreline acfvisor. Some of us would be getting jobs for the summer and waiting for the next scnool year to begin. Others would be taking a larger step toward col- lege and a career. No matter where we went or what we did, the friends — our true friends — we had made along the way would be with us forever. Our friends were there when we failed the test they had helped us study for. They lent an ear when our romances ended. Whenever we needed them, our friends were there. Throughout the year, we shared the great times and the bad times with our friends. These experiences enriched our lives and helped our friendships grow. Student Life 117 Hurricane Kate Threatened the Keys but that didn't discourage the tacky tourists during Spirit Week. Students came to school dressed as their idea of the typical tourist. Funny sunglasses, weird hats and mismatched clothes were the rule that day, as students carried radios, cameras, brochures and souvenirs in addition to their school books. ] Top Right: Not all tourists are unprepared for hurricane season. Student Life 119 ■ ' MRS HOBBS WO - ™ YS BjS cuss nil More Than Just Pep Rallies Spirit at MHS was a state of mind, a pride in their school that had students really getting involved. Whether representing their class, cheering for their team, or working to make their school the best it could be, Marathon's students gave their all. Because Marathon was a small school, its students seemed to unite and form a bond which made their spirit and pride that much stronger, and lent itself to everything they did. Student Life 121 'There's Nothing to Do was an often-heard complaint this year. The closing of Marathon's movie theater, bowling alley and skating rink reduc- ed students' opportunities for out-of-school recreation and entertainment. To fill the gap, school organizations, the lay ad- visory committee and community organizations like the Jaycees joined forces to provide a variety of activities for students. Dances were held throughout the year, both during school and on weekends; the Student Council and senior class sponsored class competitions in the fall and spring; and theatrical perfor- mances were presented by several groups. All of the activities were well-attended, and they provided the students at MHS something new and different to do and enjoy. The faculty was affected as well. Some teachers, who taught a dual-level schedule, found themselves hustling from one end of the campus to the other in an effort to meet all their classes on time. New graduation requirements mandated by the state legislature placed additional burdens on teachers and students alike, and established more rigid guidelines that had to be met. Although the year was filled with new demands ana innovations. Marathon's faculty put forth the extra effort that these changes re- quired and met the challenge. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly 8C clearly; and listen to others, even the dull Si ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud Si aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain SC bitter; for always there will be greater SC lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. ffc Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Uw Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity 8C disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue 8C loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees SC the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is un- folding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors 8C aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery 8C broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy, Love, Mom Dad Community 153 Dear David, We are very proud of you. Although they faced many new changes, this group of determined students pull- ed through handily, and showed tneir spirit during Homecoming week and at pep rallies. Being separated from the high school made it really hard for the eighth graders to be included in all of the ac- tivities they had par- ticipated in last year, but they proved that although there were walls between the middle school and the high school, they still had that Dolphin Spirit! They belong to students who have struggled since kindergarten, clim- bing step by step up the ladder, just trying to make it to the seventh grade. Now they finally reached their goal, only to find that it's time to start all over again. This year the seventh graders were offered something a little different as far as their education and social life were concerned. This year, with the new Middle School, the seventh graders were faced with new challenges as well as obstacles. The average seventh grader approached each of these rocky ledges with a few deep breaths and a determined smile. He looked forward to what his future would hold next year as a senior of the Middle Scnool. The middle school Student Council officers and representatives worked with Principal Joe Orr to organize several assemblies for the stu- dent body. Mrs. Linda Hale's eighth grade language arts class put on A Christmas Promise, a one-act play that was a hit with everyone. Two visiting companies also presented pro- grams to the middle school. The Blue Apple Players from Louisville, Kentucky, presented No More Secrets, a musical that dealt with the problem of child abuse, and the American Balalaika Company introduced students to songs and dances from different cultures in a pro- gram of international music. The separation of the middle school from the high school gave the middle school its own Homecoming court and ceremony. Marathon Middle School students were anything but dull. Seventh and eighth grade students took a field trip to Planet Ocean in Miami, where they prov- ed that learning really can be fun. Another exciting event at the mid- dle school was the Shoreline's third annual Christmas door-decorating contest. Mrs. Lowe's 7 D homeroom won with their original idea. Homeroom 8B took second place with their Christmas Pro- mise theme that followed the title of Mrs. Hale's eighth grade play. Ms. Robertson's 7C homeroom placed third with their brightly decorated tree. All of the homerooms put a lot of effort into their doors, and the middle school hall really glowed with Christmas cheer. Students 211 212 Faculty Faculty Full Force CFianges faced some of Marathon's teachers when the middle school was instituted this year on the high school campus. Along with the change in the campus came many innovations in the way each school was run. The teachers who were in- volved in the transition to the middle school concept bore the brunt of these changes. They tackled new programs, and modifications in the existing curriculum, along with such mundane matters as class, lunch and bus schedules. Marathon's teachers adapted to their new roles, however, and gave their all to turn theory into practice at the new middle school.
