In Dolphin Coun- try, this means a combination of many special happenings — the first day of school, classes, sports, pep rallies, Homecoming, class competi- tion days, Christmas holidays, club participation, spring break, prom, gradnite and, finally, gradua- tion. All of these parts fit into the “puzzle” that is Marathon High School, 1985. Opening 3 4 Opening Opening 5 DEDICATION REQUIRES INVOLVEMENT BRUCE E. KING One of the men most dedicated to and involved with his job is Mr. Bruce King. Aside from teaching his regular classes, he has taken on the extra responsibility of oc- cupational specialist and has spent innumerable hours creating and coordinating the computer programs tot report cards and attendance, to name but two. He has also been teaching computer classes at night for FKCC, showing how dedicated he is, not only to teaching, but also to his field. In the past he has been a referee for all sports, Marathon High School’s athletic director, and both football and baseball coach. Hi 'III Hu, II, fin, ' li 'i 6 Dedication True dedication is a rare quality because too many people don’t wish to take the time or expend the effort to make their work en- vironment better, not only for themselves, but also for others. Bruce King has shown true dedication in one of its highest forms. He cares about MHS, the students and the faculty. He is willing to take the extra time away from his family life to serve the school, not just as a job, but as a part of his life. Caring this much for what others might term “just a job’’ merits a special kind of recognition. For this reason the yearbook staff has chosen to dedicate the 1985 edition of the Shoreline to one man they feel has a special spirit of dedication — Mr. Bruce King. Dedication 7 A WEEK OF SPIRIT Upper Right: Hats, ties and sunglasses helped Christine Rutherford and Monica Gagliardini participate in Homecoming week. Lower Left: Moses Miliis rocked his way through punk day. Lower Right: Autograph Day caught Dawn Smith decorating Lauren Silverman with her own brand of graffiti. 8 Homecoming Homecoming 9 ROYALTY REIGNS Above Left: Queen Leslie Ground. Above Center: Candidates David Olcott and Stacey McDowell. Above Right: Candidates Paul Kornetti and Michele Falcone. Right: King David Olcott and Queen Leslie Ground are congratulated by Mrs. Gradick. The crowning of the Homecom- ing King and Queen ended a week that was filled with suspense for this year’s can- didates. In a gymnasium packed with students, parents and friends, anticipation mounted as Mrs. Gradick stepped forward to present the 1984-85 Homecom- ing King and Queen to the stu- dent body. Sharing the honors this year were Queen Leslie Ground, vice-president of D.C.T. and a member of the Nike Club, and King David Olcott, president of the Senior High Student Council. 10 Homecoming Above Left: The 1984-85 King and Queen, Leslie Ground and David Olcott. Lower Left: Candidates Debra Swaney and Mel Marshall. Lower Center: Candidates Vivian Ferreiro and Steve Chaplin. Lower Right: Candidates Leslie Ground and Randy Culmer. Homecoming 11 Upper Left: Pink Panther leads the winning senior float in the parade. Upper Right: The junior high float doesn’t show their in- experience. Above: The Warriors will never get the ball away from the sophomores’ Tony. Center Right: The second-place freshman float rolls Dolphin Kong's barrels over the Warriors. Lower Right: The junior float uses Wheaties to show the Warriors just who the big boy really is. 12 Homecoming Center Left: The junior fence might be small, but their Dolphins are mighty. Upper Right: The second-place sophomore fence shows their creativity. Left: The freshman fence declares. The Dolphins can't be stopped! Homecoming 13 Facing challenges together has strengthened the class of '85 and molded them into a single unit. From their first days as seventh and eighth graders, struggling with the mysteries of impossible- to-find homerooms, unlockable lockers and apparently inedible cafeteria food, they knew it wouldn’t be easy. As freshmen and sophomores, familiar with the day-to-day routine, they gained in confidence and manag- ed to face the rigors of biology, geometry and learning to drive. As they began their junior year, the realization that they would soon be seniors lent an element of urgency to all they did. Chemistry, American History, college prep English, Computer Lab and Humanities seemed at times to be more than they could handle. They survived, however, as all juniors eventually do, and returned to school in the fall of ’84 as full-fledged veterans, ready and willing to assume their position as seniors and school leaders. The experiences of their past five years somehow made this year seem much easier, and gave them the opportunity to prepare for their futures. Seniors 15 SENIOR NOTABLES 16 Seniors MR. Seniors 43 44 Student Life ' A student’s life does not begin or end at school. It includes all of the time a student spends on himself — at games, classes, concerts or the beach; playing, studying, working or dancing. Each student is involved in many different activities. The number and frequency of these is a per- sonal choice, for each student orchestrates his own life. Student life is rich and varied. The possibilities are countless. They are there to be ex- perienced and enjoyed to the fullest. This is the essence of student life. ) Student Life 45 SPIRIT SHOWS UP Above: Lisa Brueckner, Melanie Grant, and Myka Staryk look so unusual! Left: The new wave look is a big hit with Briska Van Leth and Lora Jones. Lower Left: Keith Strickland and Steve LaMantia display the spirit week calendar. Below: Cathy Blackwell, Michelle Estok, Fabian Vasquez and Lily Correa are made up for punk rock day. Homecoming is one week that stands out in the minds of Marathon’s students. This year the cheerleaders worked exceptionally hard to bring more spirit into the school. Special activities were set for each day of the week. On Monday students were allowed to keep their hats and sunglasses on in class for “Hats, Ties and Sunglasses” day. On Tuesday students revisited their earlier years for “Kiddie” day, and they got wild and crazy for Wednesday’s “Punk Rock” day. Thursday was “Autograph” day, when students got to write all over their friends, and Friday’s “Class Color” day got everyone ready for the pep rally and parade. The sophomore class out-shouted the other classes at the pep rally to win the spirit stick, and Joyce Silcox and David Olcott were honored as MHS’s most spirited boy and girl. Student Life 47 Every year the Sr. High Stu- dent Council sponsors class competitions. The classes compete against each other in balloon toss, flipper race, relays, pyramid building and the tug-of-war. This year's competition was a big suc- cess. Both competitors and spectators enjoyed the variety of events. The seniors were the big winners, but all of the classes had a good time trying to win. Students who were seventeen and older gladly gave up class time to participate in the school’s annual blood drive. Teachers and students alike gave blood when the bloodmobile came to Monroe County under the direc- tion of the South Florida Blood Bank of Miami. 50 Stu-jent Life BETTER HEALTH A combined effort by the American Heart Association, the Marathon Runners Club, and the Marine Bank made the funding for a modernized exercise facility possible. The Fit 1 raii was completed with the help of students, who assembled the equipment, Coach Sikora, who in- structed and oversaw the work crews, and a county maintenance team, who provided the necessary machine work. Top Right: Jon Graber is rarely seen without a carful of friends. Above: These students anxiously await the arrival of their bus. Right: Jay Wolszczak’s Supra is one of the many new cars that were seen in the parking lot this year. 52 Student Life AGAIN” Each of us had his favorite way to get to and from school every day. While most came to school on the traditional yellow school bus, others took advantage of the bike path and walked or cycled to school. Some students prefer- red to ride mopeds or motor- cycles, and many others drove cars or trucks. From Tammy Paul’s orange Jeep to Jay Wolszczak’s new Supra, there was a wide assortment of vehicles that could be seen daily ‘‘on the road again.” Top Left: This is the pump that powers the bus.. Right: 64 + 88 = a touchdown! 54 Student Life FIRED UP Left: A football player receives a hug for good luck at the Homecoming pep rally. Below: Rossi Nuccio always has to be the center of attention. Lower Left: Toga Party is the senior theme at this pep rally. Pep rallies have always been a sure way to show school spirit, and this year’s pep rallies were no exception. Prepara- tion played a big part — there were posters to be made and hung, and costumes to be designed. Most importantly, however, they gave the students a chance to have a great deal of fun. From the freshmen to the seniors, each class participated with an abundance of enthusiasm, but in the end it was the sophomores who proved to be the most spirited class. They won the spirit stick several times, and their posters out- numbered and out-sized all the rest. Student Life 55 FADS AND 1985 arrived , and with it came the dance craze. Not Flash Dance — but Break Dance, with its parachute pants and zippered clothing. There was no distinguishing between girl and boy, young and old. Everyone wore it! Along with parachute clothing came the bright neon colors. Everyone seemed to have at least one brightly-colored shirt or pair of socks. Despite these changes and new directions, the “old faithfuls” were still in style. People still sported their favorite jeans with someone else’s name on the pocket; the alligator still thrived; and T-shirts printed with tropical pictures and rock groups were seen anywhere and everywhere. What direction fashion would take next was anyone’s guess, but everyone did agree that the new fashions were fun! Top Right: This foot is stepping out in style. Each homeroom was invited to decorate its door with a Christmas theme. Many homerooms got into the holiday spirit and entered this year’s contest. Coach Sikora’s 8D homeroom was awarded first place (their second win) for their letter to “Santa Clause” — mis-spelling and all! T.G.I.FSFor most of us, Friday is the beginning of a weekend of fun. Younger students may be seen at the skating rink, while the older groups tend to gather at the old Seven Mile Bridge, or travel to Key West to see a movie or just cruise Old Town. While some students may travel as far as Miami in their free time, many others will relax at home or at the beach. Whatever the activity, most students (and teachers) will agree that this par- ticular 48-hour period is the best part of the week. Lunchtime is one of the favorite parts of the school day for students. One may pay $1.20 for the full lunch or choose to buy from the snack bar or school store. For those who decide school lunch is not for them, packed lunches are also an option. Students may also choose where to eat — in the cafeteria listening to the juke box or outside on the benches. Those seniors taking advantage of their privilege to leave campus often opt to eat out for lunch. 64 Student Life TIME! Next came the selection of just the right stone to match ones personality. Finally one had to add the details that would best represent that individual’s high school years. Once the decisions had been made and the rings had been ordered, the patient waiting began. Patience was rewarded when the rings finally arrived, and the juniors could enjoy showing off their newly acquired symbols of status and seniority. On Tuesday, January 22nd, FreeFare, a band from Tampa, gave a free concert in the gym. The band played a variety of music — everything from Lionel Richie to Twisted Sister. Then , with the help of students in the audience, they performed a skit that involved Princess Leah, Darth Vader and Indiana Jones in a combined version of “Star Wars,” “Ghost Busters,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The band returned to Marathon that Friday night for another concert which was even longer and better than their Tuesday show. FreeFare will hopefully return next year and continue to fill our days with rock and roll. Student Life 71 72 Faculty Being a teacher involves a lot more effort than one would think. A faculty member at Marathon High School is not only expected to teach his normal schedule every day, but is usually involved in extra-curricular activities as well. To do all this, these teachers need knowledge, understanding, patience, self- control, and, above all else, dedication. Every teacher at MHS is someone’s favorite in- structor. With the understanding our teachers show and their willingness to give help, advice, or that extra push for motivation, it is no wonder that they are held so dearly in our hearts. . Faculty 73 Mrs. Hobbs is the backbone of the school’s disciplinary system and is responsible for seeing that all rules are observed. Despite her reputation for strictness, Mrs. Hobbs is a nice lady who displays a willing eagerness to help anyone who needs her assistance. Mrs. Gradick can be described as a lady with power. She has a strong determination to see that Marathon High School is run in the manner which will best benefit its students. She blends leadership with charm to keep this school on smooth waters. The combination of these two ladies has produced a team well qualified to handle the pressures and frustra- tions of their respective positions. They are the heart and soul of Marathon High School. In their roles as prin- cipal and vice-principal they remain shining stars. As intern principal and head of the math department, Joe Orr performs his duties ably and produces results. As a teacher, he ex- pects perfection. His presence at MHS has brought him respect from both students and faculty alike. 74 Faculty Faculty 75 Loft: Sandra Hood, Attendance Office. To achieve that goal, they had to fill some vital positions that had been left vacant by the graduation of four of last year’s starters. Sophomore Helen Rich tried hard to fill the shoes of last year’s catcher, Sherry Bren- ner, and Allison Cameron worked to take over the first base position held last year by Kim North. Other changes in the line-up were made. Veteran left fielder Lora Jones took over the position of shortstop, ex-right fielder Julie Graber moved to left field, and second-year player Amy Grill played in right field. Baseball 133 134 Organizations Clubs are formed for many different reasons: to recognize academic excellence, to learn about future careers or simply to share a common interest. Choosing a club should be a careful decision. One should choose a club that will help prepare for the future or add to ones knowledge of personal interests. For many, belonging to clubs and participating in school activities and organiza- tions puts their high school years into perspective. Being a member of a club offers a sense of belonging, a feeling of importance and a variety of activities to par- ticipate in. A club member can attain an office — president, editor or drum major — that can teach responsibility and add to ones self confidence and leadership skills. Clubs and their activities are as essential a part of high school as sports or academics, and for those who have the time, effort and interest to dedicate to them they are most beneficial. Organizations 151 152 Underclassmen The majority of a student’s high school career is spent as an underclassman. The underclass years begin in seventh and eighth grades, when students are classified as “junior high.” Junior high students are carefree and happy-go- lucky. For them life after high school is too far away to even consider. In theirninth grade year students at- tain their high school status and the title of freshmen. Freshmen may still live their lives from day to day, but now they face the need to earn credits and are forced to carry a bit more responsibility than before. As tenth graders, underclassmen become more comfortable with the high school scene. Class unity becomes a real force, and the sophomores begin to move toward career choices as their futures approach. Juniors have more responsibilities than the rest of the.underclassmen. They put on the prom for the seniors, take SAT tests, plan their col- lege careers, and worry about grades more than ever before. Most importantly, in their eyes, they are finally ready to be seniors. Underclassmen 153 HAVE YOU PAID YOUR DUES? J. Arguez B. Antetomaso James Keeney shares the responsibility for the juniors. A. We’ve been taking care of business in the Keys for 27 years now. In those 27 years we have aggressively invested money in the communites we serve, and as they grew, we grew. Today The Marine Bank is six branches, from Key Largo to Key West, with assets over $100 million. You too can invest in the Keys. Whether you live here full time or part time, at The Marine Bank, your dollars will work for you and your Keys’ community. They can help a commercial fisherman build a new boat, help a neighbor improve a home, help a business increase its inven- tory, help a young person go to college. And while your dollars do all that, they are working hard for you, earning a good return in insured safety. The bank that grew up in the Keys! Well, maybe some things, but not all things. When you were six months old and you wanted to walk, I wasn't ready for you to walk. I was so afraid you would fall and get hurt. But your dad said to me, Let her go, she can do it, just let her go! Well, you are now a graduating senior and your dad is saying to me again, Let her go, she can do it, she'll be all right! I find it as hard now as I did eighteen years ago! As you embark upon your new life as an adult, remember we won't be there to pick you up if you fall, but we will be there to help you up if you need us. You have been and still are one in a million. You have given us so much — your love, your respect, your unselfishness, your gratitude, your loyalty — and in return we gave to you our love and complete trust. We are so proud of you. These final words were not clear in the beginning because of our lack of knowledge and understan- ding. This void has now been filled by learning and ex- perience. The underclassmen will continue to search for their goals and for the answers to their questions about life. Each individual has his per- sonal questions to ponder, and these answers may only be found within himself. The graduates will have solved all or most of their high school puzzle, but they still must face other challenges. Decisions to be made about college, business, travel, entertainment and careers lie ahead. As they ac- complish one challenge, the graduates may find other ideas to go after because of the inexhaustable resources which are available to them. 236 Closing We congratulate the class of ’85 and caution them on their approach to life’s questions in the years ahead. We offer the best of luck to those underclassmen who will follow in the seniors' footsteps, and who will give their best efforts to similar problems that they will face in the future.
