Shoreline ’84 Marathon High School Marathon, Florida Opening Faculty Seniors-- Fall Sports- Underclassmen Winter Sports Junior High Spring Sports ' Clubs Community Closing Index Editor’s Page Title 1 A WINNER NEVER QUITS After years of growth, an uphill climb, an individual reaches his peak and begins to decline. There is a man who spent his growing years in Marathon, graduated from Marathon High in 1965 and returned here as a teacher in 1970. This man seems to reach his peak every year, and still manages to exceed it the following year. This man is Coach Bayles. Five years ago Coach Bayles took over the girls' athletic program, and since then he has brought a reputation of ex- cellence to Marathon High. He coaches the Lady Dolphins softball and volleyball teams, and has been awarded the Miami News Coach of the Year award for the last two years. His philosophy is a winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.” The Lady Dolphins feel that it is a great challenge to play for this special man because he sets such high standards. They say that the results make the effort worth while. For all of these reasons, the 1984 Shoreline staff is proud and happy to dedicate their book to Mr. Chuck Bayles. 2 Dedication Dedication 3 Our Bridges Bring Us Together. Seniors 69 Fall Sports SEASON HAS ITS GPS AND DOWNS Steve Chaplin is clotheslined at the ten. Head Coach, Dennis Doll When spring training opened, the Dolphins were lacking manpower. A mere nineteen players signed up for the squad, and hopes for a winning season were grim. Head Coach Dennis Doll put a talented eleven players on the field, but had no bench to back them up. When seniors Jon Alderman and Chris Seckinger were lost for the season with knee ligament damage in the Pine Crest game, the Dolphins had to use young and inexperienced players to replace them. The Dolphins opened their season with a disappointing 6-22 loss to the Dade Christian Crusaders. Mistakes and Dolphin turnovers allowed Dade Christian to jump to an early 13-0 lead. Late in the se- cond quarter the Dolphins struck when quarterback James Chaplin hit junior wide receiver Paul Kornetti for a twenty-two yard touchdown pass. Dade Christian then capped the game with a touchdown and a field goal to at- tain a 22-6 victory. Assistant Coach, Jack Zito Defensive Coach, John Fuhrer 72 Varsity Football Junior wide receiver, Rossi Nuccio, knows he's getting the call. The Dolphins’ home opener was against the AA peren- nial powerhouse Pine Crest Panthers. The mighty Pan- ther offense was held scoreless in the first quarter, but the Dolphin offense could not generate any action either. The second quarter saw much of the same, un- til junior defensive back Steve Chaplin picked off a Jeff Boyd pass and scampered twenty-six yards for the score. The extra point attempt sailed wide but the Dolphin players and coaches, as well as the fans, were in bedlam because the Dolphins were beating the defending 16AA District Champions. Late in the se- cond quarter the Dolphins showed fatigue while the Panthers still showed pep, due to the fact that Pine Crest owned a 48-man roster. Pine Crest scored on two rushing touchdowns which followed long, time- consuming drives, leaving the Dolphins on the short end of a 13-6 score. The Dolphins traveled to Ransom, hoping to attain their first victory of the season against the Raider club. The Dolphins broke the ice early when Paul Kornetti took matters into his own hands by picking off a Raider pass and sprinting seventy-five yards for the score. Junior placekicker Rossi Nuccio added the extra point. Early in the second quarter, the Dolphins tallied another six when Steve Chaplin caught a nine- teen yard scoring pass from his brother James to make the score 13-0. The second half was a defensive struggle that saw no scoring. Quarterback James Chaplin had a good game, completing fifteen of thirty passes for 228 yards, six of which went to his brother Steve. The Dolphin defense, led by Chad Tate, Kevin Willhoite, Robert Bailey and Joe Gardner, held the Raiders scoreless. Manager, Kathy McCormick The Dolphin offense is ready for combat. Varsity Football 73 The 1-2 Dolphins journeyed to LaSalle, picked as heavy underdogs against the 4-1 Royals, who had given up only nine points through the first five games. After a scoreless first quarter, a Dolphin turnover resulted in an eight yard LaSalle touchdown. The two- point conversion was good. The situation looked bleak for the Dolphins, until quarterback James Chaplin sparked the Dolphin offense with a seventy-two yard bomb to Steve Chaplin, leaving the LaSalle defense stunned. The Dolphins' first offensive series of the se- cond half started with nineteen and thirty-eight yard passes, which brought the ball to the one. The offen- sive line opened a hole that Steve Chaplin bolted through for the score. Rossi Nuccio's kick was good for the extra point. LaSalle threatened to take the lead in the third, when they had a first and goal at the two, but the intimidating Dolphin defense stopped the Royals in four tries to end the threat. The Dolphins then made it 19-8 on Steve Chaplin’s third TD of the day from one yard out. The Dolphins bettered their record with an exciting 11-10 win over the Curley Knights in double overtime. Late in the game, veteran quarterback James Chaplin left the field with an ankle injury, but not before pick- ing off two Curley passes. At the end of regulation, the score was 0-0 and Steve Chaplin took over as quarter- back. The Dolphins had first crack at scoring, but were stopped on three tries. Placekicker Rossi Nuccio then kicked a pressure-packed twenty-five yard field goal to put the Dolphins up 3-0. The Knights retaliated with a field goal of their own from the twenty-one. The game entered its second overtime with Curley winning the toss. On a third and seven, Curley scored on a touchdown pass of seven yards, and the point-after kick was good. Then it was Marathon’s turn. Steve Chaplin hit Paul Kornetti on a ten-yard strike to make it 10-9. Head Coach Doll opted for the win instead of a tie. He called for the Chaplin-Kornetti connection once again. Surrounded with double coverage, Paul Kornet- ti made an amazing catch to seal the 11-10 Dolphin triumph. Robert Bailey, Candy Martin-Vegue, and Chad Tate enjoy their caramel covered “apples. Tight end Robert Cucchi scampers into the end zone. Quarterback James Chaplin breaks the tackle and picks up a first down. Rossi Nuccio’s kick is blocked by Ransom. 74 Varsity Football The powerful Westminster War- riors dominated every phase of the game enroute to a 29-0 trounc- ing of the Dolphins. Although Westminster scored twenty-nine points, the Dolphin defense, led by Robert Bailey and Paul Kornet- ti, played well. The Dolphins came up on the short end of the stick when Gulliver came to town. The Raiders dominated the game 20-6. The lone Dolphin touchdown came on a short blast from Steve Chaplin. The only bright spot of the game was provided by eighth grade sensation Troy Campbell, who moved up from JV to rush for ninety-seven yards. Paul Kornetti makes a game saving tackle. Jamie Chaplin follows those bone-crushing blocks for the first down. What do you think about the game, Jaim? The Dolphin defense holds up again. Varsity Football 75 Marathon vs. Coral Shores has been called the Battle of the Keys.” James Chaplin, still hampered by an ankle injury, saw little action, and this, combined with a defensive collapse, allowed the Canes to capitalize on Dolphin mistakes. The opening kick-off saw Steve Chaplin pass to Paul Kornetti, who raced sixty yards to the Cane two yard line, where Robert Cucchi bullied his way into the end zone. Cucchi finished the Dolphin scoring with a four yard TD run. The final score: Hur- ricanes 33, Dolphins 13. Coach Doll congratulates Coach Keeney on his outstanding season. In the Homecoming game against Belen, Marathon got on the scoreboard first when James Chaplin threw twenty-eight yards to Paul Kornetti on the one. Chaplin then took it from there with a quarterback sneak, and Rossi Nuccio added the extra point. In the third quarter Belen kicked a thirty-two yard field goal to tighten the gap to 7-3. Late in the fourth, Belen was on the march, but it was thwarted at the ten when Ted Badinski picked off a Belen pass. The offense then ran out the clock to lock up the Homecoming victory. Paul Kornetti hauls in the reception. A fatigued Kevin Willhoite rests at halftime. All-Conference player Chad Tate bullies his way upheld. 76 Varsity Football Varsity Football 77 Andy Van Conas is introduced at the pep rally. ' • A Curley running back goes down. Dur- ing the traditional class competi- tion week, each class showed their spirit through their participa- tion in each day’s activity. The seniors got the spirit award for 50’s Day, Class Color Day, and Blue, White, and Gold Day, and the juniors won on Punk Rock Day and Hats and Ties Day. At the end of the week, David Olcott and Sherry Brenner were awarded trophies as the most spirited boy and girl. This year the coronation ceremony was held at the beginn- ing of the week instead of at the Homecoming game. This enabled the entire student body to share in the excitement, and allowed the new king and queen to reign over the entire week’s activities. A new tradition was begun this year, when the Homecoming game cap- tain presented the game ball to the Homecoming queen after the crowning. She carried the ball all week for good luck, and returned it to the captain at Friday night’s game. The Lady Dolphins put Marathon on the map in volleyball competition, first by making it to the finals, and then by bringing home the state championship. These girls formed a powerful team that would accept nothing but the best. As a result, the best was exactly what they became! The state tournament was played in Eustis, where the state's 4 top AA teams, Marathon, Pace, Eustis and In- terlachen, fought it out for the state title. Marathon dominated its first semi-final match against Pace with scores of 15-11 and 15-11. In the second semi-final game, Interlachan defeated Eustis. Marathon and Interlachan then went head to head in the finals. The Marathon team showed its true colors, using both individual talent and the unity of the team to defeat Interlachen by scores of 15-12 and 15-5, and to bring home the state championship. The Lady Dolphins were given a big homecoming when they got back to Marathon. The team members rode through town on a fire truck to a welcome back party, where they were each given a rose to honor their accomplishment. Along with the regular season games, the Lady Dolphins played in two invitational tournaments against some of the best teams in South Florida. The Ladies won both of these tournaments, and ended their season by winning the District, Regional, Sectional and, most importantly, State Championships. L. to R, Row 1: T. Paul, S. Brenner, B. At the outset of the season things looked great for the Dolphins, whose starting five of Steve Chaplin, James Chaplin, Bobby Jacobs, Paul Kornetti, and David Kosin had played together since Little League. The Dolphins opened against Cypress Lakes, a tough 3A team from Fort Myers, who handed the Dolphins an 83-46 loss. The Dolphins realized that, even with the talent they had, they must ex- ecute the fundamentals properly. They did just that as they reeled off seven straight wins, including a 98-78 victory over the Westminster Warriors, which saw Bobby Jacobs set a school record with 48 points. Also in that streak, Steve Chaplin set a school record for assists in a game. On January 24, the Dolphins traveled to Coral Shores to play the Canes in front of their student body. The Dolphins played a tough and aggressive offense, but the defense was not there. Coral Shores took advantage and beat the Dolphins 81-67. Varsity Basketball 129 On January 31, the Dolphins played host to the LaSalle Royals. “It was one of those nights, Coach Zito said afterwards. The Dolphins beat the Royals by the score of 112-76. The 112 points scored broke the longstanding school record for most team points in a game (102). Also in that game, Bobby Jacobs scored an incredible 51 points, which drew national recognition. The Dolphins were flying high as Coral Shores came to town on February 10 in front of MHS' stu- dent body. The Dolphins broke out of the gate early, storming to an early 10-0 lead. Things then leveled off until the second half, when the Dolphins defense col- lapsed, and the Canes once again won 81-69. The team ended their regular season with a 75-54 vic- tory over Pine Crest. In the fourth, the Dolphins switched to a full-court press that paid off. The Dolphins played a furious fourth quarter, but the ef- fort was too little too late, and the Dolphins' hopes for additional postseason play ended with a nine point loss to Curley. Bobby Jacobs ended the season with a 27 points-per-game average, which won him first team all-county honors, according to the Miami News. The Lady Dolphins, under head coach Chuck Bayles, faced a rough 20-game schedule, starting on March 3rd. Coach Bayles felt that this year’s team would be as strong as last year’s, but would lack that team’s depth. “We should be the strongest contender for the conference champs,” he said. Veteran starter Tiffany Daniels felt that if the team wanted the State title as badly as the volleyball team did, they could possibly do it again. Veterans Sally Graber and Lora Jones agreed that the team boasted a talented roster that could go far with hard work and effort. Newcomers Missy VanEsselstine and Laura Daughtry were both ex- cited about the season, but found MHS's brand of softball to be harder than the Youth Club baseball they had played before. Kim North checks to see if the last pitch was a strike. Lora Jones shows that concentration does the trick. Softball 159 Waiting for the batter. Coach Coletti gets ready for the next pitch. Tiffany Daniels is just a swingin. Amy Grill waits for a ball to come her way. Getting ready to throw. Vicki Costa looks at her target. Softball 161 Sherry Brenner catches for Tammy Paul at batting practice. Laura Daughtry and Lora Jones show that there are more ways than one to hit. Briska, Lora and Tiffany are the front runners of the dreaded lO-minuti run. Rita Jones demonstrates how to hold the ball before throwing. 162 Softball Chris Costa fields a ground ball at third. Mr. Barts is always ready to lend a helping hand. Sherry Brenner and Laura Daughtry concentrate on practice. “I got it, I got it, I got it!' To help handle the rough spots, Coach Bayles drags the field. Softball 163 TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME This year saw the debut of last year’s assistant coach, Matt Ar- thur, as head baseball coach. Coach Arthur felt that this was a year for setting goals and reaching them. The season saw a lot of young and inexperienced players in starting positions. However, several seasoned veterans return- ed to add strength to the roster. Dennis Gregory, Mike Lohlein and Drew Rutherford made a great short stop-second-first combina- tion, while Matt Lynch, Jim Ward and Randy Culmer handled the outfield. Returning players, Andy Van Conas, Rosse Nuccio, Darrin Smith, Donald Irwin and Steve Chaplin, also added their ex- perience to the squad. Clubs 173 THEY’RE LEARNING THE ROPES This year the Junior High Student Council accomplished many things! They portrayed cartoon characters in the Homecoming parade, sponsored dances, and raised money to pay for the volleyball team’s T-shirts and knee pads.
