This task involves the choosing of an individual to whom the yearbook will be dedicated. This year’s staff considered many people, but decid- ed upon a person to whom they felt a great closeness. This lady is very impor- tant to them as she has devoted a great deal of time, energy, and concern toward their goal of publishing a memorable yearbook. She has taken a team full of “rookies” and molded them into a team of experts. She ruled with a strict code of ethics, but assisted with an understanding heart. She devoted endless hours toward our mutual goal, and helped tie together many loose ends. Coupled with her duties as sponsor of the Shoreline, she taught a full day of classes as well. However, she always made time when we needed an advisor or a friend. Without this ladies’ tireless efforts and devotion, the 1982-83 Shoreline would not have been possible. With appreciation and love, we, the 1983 Shoreline Staff, dedicate our book to our lady of all seasons, Mrs. Vivian Chisolm. It brings us joys faint as in the perfume of the flowers, faded, dried, of the summer that is gone. — Henry Ward Beecher Division 15 SEVENTH GRADE Being a seventh grader has always been a bit rough on Marathon’s youngest students. This year’s “little people” were no exceptions. During the first few weeks, everyone seemed dazed and confused. Eventually, though, they got used to the surroun- dings and Marathon’s way of doing things, and their true natures began to develop. Although still a bit unsure, they became more confident as the year progressed, and by the end of the year they had become old hands, ready to assume leadership of the junior high and help next year’s “little people” find their ways through the halls, class changes, bell schedules, and locker combinations that make up the mystery known as seventh grade. The seventh grade girls found it more enjoyable to eat their lunch outside. 16 Seventh Grade CLASS OF '88 Roy Thompson found humor in his reading. The three musketeers found their lunch boring. They’re “junior high,” those little guys that seem- ed to fill the halls between classes and overflowed the cafeteria during lunch. In the junior high community, however, they were the big shots, the pros. They had already become involved in school activities, and by the end of the year were well on their way to beginning their senior high careers. Next year, as freshmen, they will be participating in senior high activities, and will have even more of an opportunity to be a part of Marathon High School. Jennifer Jenkins decided studying wasn’t her bag. Danny Bower was caught meditating after his exam. Senior halfback John Kornet- ti scored both touchdowns of the game in the first half. The Dolphins ended up with 189 rushing yards. The Dolphins chalked up their second win of the season by defeating the Pace Spartans 16-7. After the first half, the Dolphins were leading 9-0. In the second half, after seven minutes, the Dolphins scored again as John Kornetti went over from the one. Ernie Morales kicked the extra point. The ball rolled out of the end zone to give the Dolphins a two-point safety. The Dolphins suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Pine Crest Panthers with a score of 35-0. The Panthers put a lot of points on the board in the first half. In the third quarter, the Dolphins held the ball. Running backs Kevin Potter and John Kornetti had some yardage, but fumbles and interceptions kept the Dolphins from scoring. Playing on a rain-soaked field, the Dolphins defeated the Mary Immaculate Mariners 22-14. Kevin Potter came through with 127 yards on 16 carries, scoring two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. The Dolphins had one touchdown in the first half, moving 75 yards to score with a two yard plunge by quarterback Jamie Chaplin. In the se- cond half, the Dolphins moved steadily downfield. Potter’s four yard burst into the end zone hiked up the score. Later in the game, Potter had a 61 yard run for the last touchdown of the game. The Dolphins shut out the Ransom Raiders 24-0. After an early fumble by Ransom, Kevin Potter scored first for Marathon, following his touchdown with a 2 point conversion play in the first 12 minutes. In the second half, Robert Bailey hauled down a Raider back in the end zone, gaining a 2 point safety. The Raiders then punted. Following a 17 yard toss to Steve Chaplin for a touchdown and Ernie Morales’kick, the score stood at 17-0. Later, Ransom fumbled on their own 35, and Potter followed with a 35 yard touchdown. Ernie Morales kicked the extra point again, and the score was 24-0 in the second period. Mallery Hayes was the leading Dolphin rusher with 68 yards on 13 attempts. The game’s leading tackier was Jake Sitzler with 11 stops. The Dolphins achieved their third shutout 28-0 against the LaSalle Raiders on Parents’ Night. Ernie Morales kicked for the extra point but missed. He made up for it later in the first quarter, though, with a 28 yard field goal. In the second half, Paul Chaplin ended the game with a 7 out of 15 completion record. Jake Sitzler, who sprained his ankle in the preceding game, ended the game with two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 11 unassisted tackles. The Dolphins achieved another victory against the Gulliver Raiders by the score of 28-0. Early in the game, John Kornetti put the Dolphins on the board with score of 28-0. Early in the game, John Kornetti put the Dolphins on the board with a 31 yard option pass. Senior Gene Thompson scored the first touchdown, and Ernie Morales booted the ex- tra point. Shortly after, Kornetti went over the goal line from the four, but the extra point attempt failed. Later in the first quarter, Morales made up for his missed kick with a 28 yard field goal. In the second half, Paul Kornetti scored two touchdowns on passes from Jamie Chaplin. Mallery Hayes had an exceptional game with 93 yards on 13 tries. The Coral Shores Hurricanes defeated the Dolphins on a rain-soaked field 14-0. The Dolphins, still nagged by injured players, made many little mistakes that cost them. The Dolphins had 100 yards on the ground, 46 belonging to Kevin Potter. Defensive backs Mallery Hayes, Steve Chaplin, and Paul Kornetti played good games. The Dolphins shut out the Belen Wolverines in their last game of the season 15-0. Marathon gained more then 200 yards rushing. The touchdowns occurred in the fourth quarter when Kevin Potter sprinted 40 yards for the first touchdown. John Kornetti added the two-point conversion and also scored the Dolphins touchdown. Ernie Morales booted the extra point. This was the last high school football game for eight seniors who graduated this year. They are John Kornetti, Kevin Potter, Vince Hendrix, Robbie Frieg, Mitch Horn, Ed Putz, Don Pinder and Gene Thompson. Football 39 40 Football Football 41 In 1982 the football program was expanded to include a junior high squad. Working with a lot of new recruits and a few Youth Club veterans, coaches John Critcher, Tim Reed, and Mike Freeman had a tough task to deal with. The 1982 season started out exceptionally well for the Junior Dolphins with a 35-0 win over the Coral Shores Hur- ricanes. The Dolphins took on Gulliver Prep at home, losing the contest with a close score of 14-13. With their record 1- 1 the JV squad traveled to Westminster with high hopes of improving their record to 2-1, but all hopes came crashing to the ground at the final buzzer with the score 30-8 in favor of the Warriors. The Junior Dolphins then traveled on to Belen where they lost 6-0. The JV squad returned home to play Pine Crest, but the Dolphins couldn’t get it together. With the defense falling apart, and the offense unable to control the ball, the Dolphins fell to a 44-0 defeat. After a solid week of practice the Dolphins finally got it together and beat the Ransom Raiders 28-0 for their Homecoming game. Troy Campbell broke outside for gain of yardage. JUNIOR HIGH From nomination to crowning it was a suspenseful and happy time for four couples who were chosen to be the Junior High king and queen candidates. This year the decision was very tough on the judges as all the candidates were outstanding. This year the honor went to Miss Hillary Hammond and Mr. Jaime Rojas. in a moment of tearful joy the queen was crowned. The king and queen greeted their subjects. Jaime Rojas received the banner of royalty. 44 Homecoming HOMECOMING Theresa Regna and Chris Adams Emily Pace and Jaime Rojas Homecoming 45 Ik Julie Graber and Barney Mitchell Hillary Hammond and Shane Sweeting HOMECOMING Homecoming ’82 was one homecoming full of psyched-up students. All the classes dressed up to show their spirit, but the junior class came out to be the most spirited all around. All of this spirit and posters, and yelling and screaming at the pep rally, added up to excitlement. Anticipation mounted with the parade and the football game and, of course, the crowning of the king and queen. Cowgirl Lee Larson captured Mr. Arthur . . . captured his heart. Everyone stayed clear of Nancy Aldret, and there was no need for explanation. Two cool dudes were just hanging out. 46 Homecoming HOMECOMING The most spirited boy was Noel Manheimer. This made their Homecoming task more dif- ficult. The Dolphins played their best game of the year, holding the highly regarded Warriors to less than 100 yards total offense, but still came out on the short end of the final 14-0 score. We’re number one! Both teams were out to catch the pass. Mallery Hayes went for the tackle. Robbie Freig punted the ball. 52 Homecoming WARRIORS Jon Alderman tried to get the ball. The tackle was made by Don Pinder. The Dolphins proved that they were tough. Ed Putz blocked as Mallery Hayes broke through the line. Homecoming 53 LADY DOLPHINS The Lady Dolphins of MHS had another fantastic year of volleyball in the 1982-83 season. All six of their starting players returned for the 1982 season. They were seniors Kris Brenner, Laura Ernst and Liz Shveima, and juniors Sherry Brenner, Tiffany Daniels and Kim North. Along with returning team members Rita Jones and Tammy Paul, Chris Costa, Julie Graber, Sally Graber and Lora Jones worked their way into the 1982 team as alternates. Due to last year’s winning season, the Lady Dolphins were recognized as one of the best volleyball teams in South Florida. This recognition earned the Lady Dolphins an invitation to the most prestigious volleyball tournament in Miami, the Jaguar Invitational. The Lady Dolphins finished sixth over all in the tournament, which included 15 teams. The Lady Dolphins were also invited to the Plantation High School Volleyball Tournament, where they finished seventh over all of the 20 teams that participated. The Lady Dolphins brought a 26-4 record into the District 16AA Tournamnet, losing only to 4A schools. The Lady Dolphins earned a bye in the first round of the tournament, then defeated Coral Shores in the semi-finals and Westminster in the finals, to claim the 1982 District 16AA title. This advanced the Lady Dolphins to the Regional 8AA Tournament where they defeated Pine Crest and captured the Region 8AA title for the second year in a row. The Lady Dolphins took their regional title to the Sectional 4AA Tournament where they faced John Carroll’s Lady Rams in Ft. Pierce. The MHS Lady Dolphins got ready for the serve. An ankle injury suffered by Tiffany Daniels left the Lady Dolphins in a state of confusion because of the change in rotation. The team’s confidence in themselves, however, made them still hopeful of winning the sectional tourna- ment. Unfortunately, time and luck ran out for the Lady Dolphins who found themselves in the same position they were in last year, one step short of the State Tournament. Volleyball 59 60 Division WINTER WINTER WINTER WINTER WINTER If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperi- ty would not be so welcome. — Anne Bradstreet Division 61 FRESHMEN This year’s freshman class should have been proud of themselves. For their first year in senior high, they were full of spirit and enthusiasm. That was Coach Critcher’s job when he took over a very young Dolphin basketball program. Talented but in- experienced was the proper assessment for the 1982-83 Dolphins. At times our team played brilliantly and at others they showed their inexperience. Even so they were ranked in the Miami News polls for most of the season reading as high as eighth in the South Florida A-AA competition. The Dolphins’ record this year was a very close .500. The expectations of the young ball players was much higher, but the accomplishments of the team were much to be pro- ud of, from the community and from themselves. The season record for the Dolphins was an even 13-13. Although sometimes very painful, the lessons learned by this year’s basketball team will be useful in the near and far future of every member of the team. Offense took over. Basketball 87 Gene Thompson took a step up to the basket. David Kosin made sure he had enough room. Robb Shipley watched a shot. Bobby Jacobs gained possession of the ball. 88 Basketball Steve Chaplin shot with accuracy. Paul Kornetti scored still another 2 points. Jamie Chaplin was ready to go. Basketball 89 Gene Thompson went for the one and one. Paul Kornetti played keep away. 90 Basketball Paul Kornetti jumped for a hit at the ball. David Kosin took a flying leap. Steve Chaplin thought about his next move. Robb Shipley shot for the stars. Basketball 91 Jamie Chaplin jumped against a tough opponent. 7 Gene Thompson passed the ball. Bobby Jacobs fought for possession. Robb Shipley tried to out move his opponent. David Kosin showed his good form. Jamie Chaplin dunked it. Basketball 93 JUNIOR VARSITY L-R, T-B, Row 1: R. Holmes, J. Statisticians Billie Sharp and Diane Zellhart. 94 Basketball BASKETBALL Howard Hayes stared in awe at the basket. This year’s junior varsity basketball squad was an inex- perienced team, as most of the players from last season had moved up to varsity. Coach Culver did everything he could to build a winning team, but the squad’s lack of ex- perience lost some games that otherwise might have been won. With this year of experience under their belts, the junior varsity Dolphins will be looking forward to a winning season next year. Troy Campbell dunked it. Basketball 95 Rossi Nuccio looked for a teammate. Paul Davis brought the ball downcourt. Hans Wagner looked at a difficult shot. Jon Graber and teammates thought about getting into the game. 96 Basketball Keep away is what Matt Lohlein did. Paul Davis shot from the foul line. Basketball 97 VARSITY Team captains — J. Oney, R. Senior John Oney broke Max Anthony’s 1978 scoring record of 10 goals by net- ting 11 goals. Other players who contributed to the team’s scoring drive included Ernie Morales and Chris Molineaux, each with three. Marathon earned their only win of the season against the Westminister Warriors by the score of 5-3. The leading scorers for the game were Ernie Morales and John Oney with two goals each, and Chris Molineaux with one. Senior Dolphins who will not be returning next season are John Oney, Chris Molineaux, Larry Doerffel, Hulber Gargliardini, Ricky DeSanctis, and Mallory Hayes. Coach Terpos explained the play to John Oney. Raymond Aldret showed off for the camera. Varsity players discussed their strategy before a game. 100 Soccer Mel Marshal reached up to block th« goal.
