Marathon High Shoreline '82 Twenty-Fifth Edition 1957-4982 Title Page THANK YOU The Pilgrims By Milo Stephens Six yeors ogo some travellers met To start a journey to o land Which then seemed very for remote. We were a strange and motley bond Who little knew what lay ahead; Nor did we care for we were gay And light of heart and knew that friends Would gladly help us on our way. 2 Opening MARATHON HIGH Opening 3 The road was fraught with toil and strife. The path was difficult and steep. We wandered on o'er mountains bare. Through midnight forests, wild and steep. The monsters met along the way Were Hopelessness, Despair, and Fear. But faithful teachers were our guides Who brought us courage, hope and cheer. Mm More pleosont vistos tempted us To leove the woy. The promised land Seemed for removed while footsore, tired. And weary grew our pilgrims' band. Dut friends we'd made encouraged us And kindly helped us to ascend Until at length we came in sight Of our long pilgrimage's end. Opening 5 FOR TWENTY-FIVE The Journey took us six long years But finally 'tis done. We stand Upon the mountain peak and now In new perspective see winds out below And from our higher point of view We see the beauties we have passed and realize their worth anew. 6 Opening SILVER YEARS We see the flowers we foiled to pick The sunny slopes we possed in hoste. We might hove drunk ot wisdom's spring But only torried there to toste. The silvery mirror of o pool By which we stopped to rest one day Has held the image of the joy That friendship gave us on our way. Opening 7 The courage we gained thus far Will help us on, new goals to reach. We go no longer as o bond Of pilgrims — There's o trail for each. The journey now must be alone But may a vision bright and clear Guide every traveler on his way And mem'ry fill his heart with cheer. 8 Opening Opening 9 OF CHERISHED MEMORIES Seniors Once we were Freshmen And Oh! How green — We'd go thru the halls. Almost unseen. We soon become Sophomores And rushed in a moss The teachers oil told us You're the brightest doss” Juniors we ore And Juniors we'll be 'Til the first doy of school Then Seniors you'll see. Now that we're Seniors All teachers look gay And tell us they're sorry We're going away. Opening ■ , MRS. KATHARINE GRADICK Twenty-five years is a very long time, and many happenings have occurred throughout the history of Marathon High. Most of these happenings have been improvements, and the lady to whom we have dedicated our book is an example of one of our most noted improvements. For the past fifteen years, the greatest part of our twenty-five year existence, she has devoted herself to making Marathon High a school of which we can all be proud. Her attitude is positive; her understanding is filled with warmth and kindness. She rules with a combination of authority and com- passion. She is fair, yet demands results. She is firm, yet allows for flexibility. She expects productivity from her staff and students, yet she protects them, and comes to their defense with motherly assertiveness. She is a dedicated lady, armed with enthusiasm, guided by wisdom, and directed with love for all of us. With appreciation and deep affection we dedicate our silver an- niversay SHORELINE to the lady who cheered us through our vic- tories, consoled us in our disappointments and supported us with confidence in all our endeavors. Now we want her to glow with us in this glorious celebration of twenty-five years. Please accept this dedication, given with gratitude and love, MRS. KATHARINE GRADICK 14 Dedication Marathon High Alma Mater Coral sands on shores are gleaming Azure skies above, Blue, blue waters softly streaming Past the school we love. Marathon High, our Alma Mater, We sing thy praises loud. We'll try our best for perfect learning And evermore be proud. Trade winds gentle breezes blowing Birds on wing above. Sunbeams rays are ever gleaming, On the school we love Marathon High we take great pride In each project we do. We'll take the future in our stride. With happy thoughts of you. WILKINSON 1904-1981 Man is a complex creature, and Bud Wilkinson was no exception. He was a man who began teaching social studies and ended up teaching science. Perhaps this is why he often remarked on man's progress and chuckled at man's lack of evolution. Bud looked at the world with hope and excitement and became frustrated when others could not see his vision. And he had a fine vision of mankind. In a way he was something like the legendary Arthur who wanted right to be might. He was a champion when we needed one. He was not afraid to speak up when he felt something was wrong or needed a new direction. Often his voice was the first heard and the loudest and sometimes the only one. More than once he alone spoke up and said what so many others silently thought. More than one of us had the comfort of his support when we were challenged; whether we were right or wrong. Bud gave us the assurance that we were not alone. He would tell us if he felt we were right or wrong, but he would always support us when we needed him. What better definition is there of a friend? Some looked at Bud Wilkinson and thought he was a stern man. In many ways he was. He saw the potentiality of mankind and became angry when it was wasted. He could not com- prehend why so many worked so hard to avoid working. Whatever he did, he gave everything he had. He had a vision and worked toward that vision. Whether it was a vision of a scholar, a teacher, a father, a husband, or a friend. Bud strove to be the best he could be. He will be missed because he was the person he was. We are fortunate to have known him. Stephen Spender wrote a poem entitled. I Think Continually of Those Who Were Trui.' Great. Bud would probably chuckle; but when we think of that poem, we think of him: The names of those who in their lives fought for life Who wore at their hearts the fire's center. Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun. And left the vivid air signed with their honor. Sports 75 FOOTBALL - THEN ... Baby Dolphins - 1977-78 76 Football .. . Although the first quarter didn't prove very beneficial to the Dolphins, in the second quarter Mott Reyes ( 5) ran 86 yards on a kick-off return for a Dolphin touchdown. Although they did not put many points on the board, the Marathon offense showed signs of promise. Showing up at inop- portune times, penalties slowed down Marathon's offense. John Manheimer ( 34) and Scott Campbell ( 80) led the Morathon of- fense. Campbell also hod the only interception of the gome. Pope John Poul 7-6 The second game of the season proved to be more successful for the Dolphins os they won ogoinst the Pope John Paul Eogles of Boco Raton. The Eogles' only score wos a field goal kick after a fumble by Marathon's offense. Marathon's defense continually turned bock the Eogles. Tom Bridger ( 78) led the defensive line with 14 tackles. The Dolphin offense showed sings of improvement, moving out of the wishbone formation into the more diversified I forma- tion. The highlights of Marofhon's scoring drive included the running of Robbie Smith ( 25) and John Monheimer ( 34) ond the passing of Kroeg Dickman ( 7). Mott Reyes picked up 88 yards for the touchdown. 78 Football Robbie Smith took off for some valuable yardage. John Kornefti out-maneuvered the Pope John opponents. Pinecresf 14-0 The first home gome of the season was ployed against the Pinecrest Panthers. Although the Dolphins suffered a 14-0 loss to give them a 1-2 record. Coach Hole was proud of the way his team ployed. The only mistakes of the gome were interceptions in the first and fourth quarters and a 40-yord field goal missed by kicker Chris Franco ( 3) in the 2nd quarter. Doth the defense and offense ployed a good game despite the large number of penalties earned. All in all, the Dolphins played os well as ever. Tom Dridger ( 78) had an awesome game at defensive end and John Kornetti ( 30) had on outstanding game at linebacker. The Dolphins charged through the swamp. Chris Franco led the Dolphin line. The Dolphins took a quick break before getting back to the game. Football 79 Delen 13-10 Marathon faced Delen for their 1st conference game of the year. The game proved to be a big disappointment for the Dolphins as they fell victim to their own mistakes. For the second week in a row, the ball was intercepted by the opponent. Delen was able to score easy touchdowns and by the 2nd half the score proved to be too much for the Dolphins to overcome. The bright spots of the game for the Dolphins were the running of John Kornetti ( 30) and Kevin Potter ( 33). Chris Franco ( 3) made a successful 35-yard field goal attempt. Again, the Dolphin defense was led by Tom Dridger ( 78). Chris Franco booted the ball with ease. John Kornetti plunged through the Delen attackers. Robbie Smith and Ed Putz charged down the field. Coach Hale discussed strategy with Vince Hendrix. 80 Football Marathon's defense held back Ransom. John Kornetti easily escaped from our opponent. Football 81 R. Smith heaved the ball for some yardage. Western 26-7 The Dolphins played their next-to-the-last home gome against the Western Wildcats. Although it was the start of the second season, the Dolphins' record slumped 1-4. with a score of 26-7. Dave Quiring was at quarterback with Jon Alderman ( 12) os relief quarterback. In the fourth quarter. Alderman tossed the ball to Kornetti who then passed it to Marcus Holmes and totaled a 65 yard touchdown com- bination. Chris Franco then came in for the extra point. Kornetti was the leading passer with 59 yards and 17 passes for 14 yards. Ransom 7-6 Although both teams entered the game with not-so-good records. Marathon lost to the Ransom Raiders 7-6. Marathon's only score come when John Kornetti flipped a 12 yard pass to James Chaplin on the Raider 12. John Kornetti then finished it up with a 5 yard drive. Chris Franco misfired on the conversion and gave the Raiders a one point edge. Tom Bridger and Bryan Riffe had fine defensive games. On the offensive side, quarterback Dave Quiring (18) started the game and then Jon Alderman came off the bench. C. Tate and T. Bridger showed our opponent we were tough. ROYALTY . . . Marathon's offense hardly went anywhere as they tried to move the ball down the wet field. The Raiders rushed for 216 yards while the Dolphins collected 97 yards on the ground and completed 3 out of 11 passes for 17 yards. The Dolphin defense held bock the Raiders. t ' • Homecoming 89 RIVALS MEET 90 Football Dolphins piled up on Westminster. Football 91 Pace 35-0 The Dolphins put o disappointing end to their season, losing to the Pace Spartans 35-3. The Dolphin defense was weakened when two of their backfield starters were left in Marathon for disciplinary reasons. Offensively the Dolphins were unable to move downfield during most of the game. In the second period, quarterback John Kornetti heaved the ball to Scott Campbell ( 80) for a 45 yard gainer. Chris Franco ( 3) then came on to kick the ball 27 yards for 3 points. The half ended with Marathon down 14-3, but things only got worse as the Spartans kept scoring on the Dolphins, leaving them with a score of 35-3 as the dust settled. Lovo ya, Denise BUMP, The M.H.S. volleyball team began their season without really knowing what the year had in store for them. The team mainly consisted of sophomores who needed com- petition to improve, and that's what they got. Their goal was to surprise the league contender at the end of the year. They accomplished this goal by eliminating Westminster from first place with a stunning 74-79 victory in four overtimes. At this time they felt ready to compete with most teams in the league. However, after reaching their goal they were unable to maintain their earlier level of competition and suffered a slump at the end of the season. Coach Sikora felt that the sophomores and freshmen had gained experience on the court that would be beneficial in years to come. The highlight of the year was the Smurf Squad” made up of four 8th graders whose average height was 5'5 . Mr. Doll, faculty advisor to the squad, was named Papa Smurf. This year's chorus class, with the encouragement of Mrs. Pait, decid- ed to revive the Follies in order to generate funds to purchase music. They hoped it would enhance the chorus class and strengthen the music department. The chorus class picked the theme of the wild west. Mrs. Pait selected the cowboy or western songs and wrote the dialogue. The set was designed with the aid of Mrs. Chisolm. The students had the option of participating in either the actual show or stage work. All students were also asked to sell program advertising and tickets.
