Rim? v . • A MARATHON HIGH The anticipation rises, the lights are dimmed, the audi- ence settles down, and the curtain goes up! So grab your date, take a seat, munch your pop corn, sip your coke, sit back, relax and enjoy our show! Our staff faced the pleasant task of choosing a “special guest star” to whom we could dedicate our hook. It was not an easy task, as many devoted people came to mind, but nonetheless, we chose one very worthy lady whom we all admire and adore. She appears on campus daily wearing her biggest smile, and may be seen preparing costumes and scenery for graduation, as she sponsors the senior class. One may catch a glimpse of her hurrying behind the scenes of the Nike Fashion Show which she pro- duces and directs. You may catch an act of her performing as Mrs. Gradick’s co-star in the role of assistant principal. Students may be lined up at her door requesting her autograph so they might make a class change, or she may be found giving advice to a student in need of guidance. She is always concerned about her audience, the student body, as she strives to see to their needs and concerns, by providing any necessary props they might find useful. But this lady’s talents extend beyond those of a star. She’s a dedicated, patient, loving performer with undying energy and understanding for every life she touches. So ladies and gentlemen, will you join us in applauding our special guest star, Jessie Hobbs ... Encore! Dedication 15 Senior Division 17 MR. RICK HALE SENIOR CLASS FAVORITE As you can clearly see in the picture above, Mr. Hale is very popular, especially with the senior girls! He seems to enjoy it very much, but any man in the right state of mind would! He is well known around here as the M.H.S. Dolphin football coach, a great Gov- ernment teacher, and most of all, for his warm, understanding smile! So, for you, Mr. Rick Hale, a special thanks from the Senior Class of 1980. 18 Seniors Most of the faces you are about to see have been shown in year- books throughout the past 5 years. This year is different from the rest though, because they make up the 1980 Senior Class! In addi- tion she finds time to support every club and organiza- tion at Marathon High. However, besides being a prime candidate for “Principal of the Year,” she is a warm and sensitive lady with a keen perception of the community in which she operates and the needs and desires of her student body. The Dolphins had one of their best seasons in the history of Mar- athon football, with a 6 win, 4 loss record. The Dolphins’ opponents were not to be taken lightly, with tough wins over AAA and conference leading AA schools. Four of Marathon’s wins were made a lot more difficult by being played away from home. Two of Marathon’s losses were hard fought games, but the Dolphins were just outmanned when the final buzzer sounded. 66 Football Page 66: 1. Captain — Mike Gay 2. Captain — Tom Gerbase 3. Football 67 DETERMINED BUT DEFEATED A tough Warrior team caused the Dolphins’ first loss of the season. Due to seven fumbles and an extremely strong oppo- nent, the Dolphins were only able to score after recovering a fumble on the ten yard line. West- minster routed the Dol- phins 44-6. Belen out-lasted Mara- thon and cost them their second defeat of the sea- son. Marathon’s fumbles and penalties contributed to the Wolverine victory. Adair Hendrix scored the only touchdown for the struggling Dolphin offense. The final score was 27-6. 68 Football Page 68: 1. John Manheimer, Adair Hendrix; 2. Joe Tessier, Bruce Coccoli, team; 3. Mar- athon took the lead in the first half, lost it, and regained it once again. Marathon fans were as psyched up and rowdie as the players were while the Dolphins played one of their best all-around games of the season. The Dolphins traveled to Boca Raton and handed the St. Andrews Scots a 14-5 Homecoming loss. The Scots led in the first half, but the Dolphins came alive in the second. Homecoming 75 A ROYAL VICTORY FOR THE DOLPHINS The fans knew what a great game it was going to be when the Dolphins scored on their first possession. Quarterback Bruce Irwin connected with Jim Bridger from six yards out to score. The Dolphins were able to score four more times as Gulliver made many mistakes which the Dolphins converted into points making the final score 31-13. Mike Gay, Tom Gerbase, George Rockett, and Adair Hendrix recovered the fumbles and intercepted the passes that set up the scoring drives. Tom Ger- base, Bruce Irwin, and Adair Hendrix made the touch- downs with Irwin scoring twice. It was one of the best games the Dolphins have played so far this year with both the offense and defense looking and playing great! 1. Manola Miranda ( 5) intercepts a Raider pass. 2. Bruce Irwin ( 12) hands off to Tom Gerbase ( 34) who rushed for a total of 104 yards against Gulliver. 3. Rudy Rodriquez ( 30) blocks a Raider player. 4. This year the honor went to Miss Renee Schlegel and Mr. David Perry. Renee hopes to attend the Uni- versity of Florida and later become a specialist in fashion merchandising. David plans on majoring in physical education in college and hopes to become a coach. Homecoming 77 The Dolphins dominated every aspect of the game against the Mary Immacu- late Mariners and came out with a 44-0 victory. It was a game where all who played turned into stars. Tom Gerbase, Bruce Irwin, Manola Miranda, Tim Bluett, Adair Hendrix, and Kevin Potter were the top offensive players. The defensive attack was led by Rob Smith, Tom Ger- base, Tim Bluett, Tom Crabb, and Jim Bridger. The Dolphins gained the admiration of the fans once again as they held Pine- crest 15-15 until late in the third quar- ter. The Panthers out-numbered the Dolphins 4 to 1, and therefore Pinecrest was able to outlast the Marathon Dol- phins. Although Pinecrest claimed a 42- 15 victory, the Dolphins played their most superb game of the season. 78 Football Page 78: 1. J. Bridger, K. Poller, A. Hendrix: 2. J. Bridger: 3. T. Although the junior high students may sometimes feel that they are not really a part of Marathon High School, their student council is very much in the thick of things. In December, their Christ- mas Ball celebrated the crowning of Donna Brower and John Ploegert as Queen and King for the 79-80 school year. In the spring, their 4th Annual Raffle raised funds to ben- efit the school and rewarded the top ticket salesman with lunch at the Sombrero Country Club. They have really gotten their act together. But when you have people like Josh Shea. Jeff Windorski, Renee DeMaras, and Kristine Petsche leading you, how could you possibly go wrong? The class of ’81 started the year on the right foot in the school spirit department. They won their first spirit stick ever at the first pep rally. This really got them psyched up. For Homecoming some members of the class (Tammy Rar- ick, Kim Olsen, Lisa Bodker, Cindy Windberg, Karen Cas- tle, and others) made all kinds of posters, buttons and megaphones. All this and voice power from everyone in the class got the class its second spirit stick. It is traditional for the junior class to choose the theme for the Homecoming Parade. This class chose “songs. This proved to be the right choice for them as they won the float competition with the song Hand of Doom.” Underclassmen 139 Kirby, Carrie Kornetti, Veronica Little, Betty Lowery, Melanie Lowery, Steve Matlock, Darlene Mathis, Craig May, Machelle Martin, Susan Mason, Ross McMahon, Jamie Minton, Nancy Miranda, Manola Moore, Glen Moore, Joyce Moore, Melody Monahan, Arthur Nelson, Henry Odum, Robbie Olsen, Kim Oney, Judy Petsche, Kristine Parlegreco, Michael Poole, Gail 140 Underclassmen Class of'81: This year has been a very suc- cessful one for the junior class. By a sure thing, I don't mean an easy thing. I mean something you can count on instead of a less certain civilian future. To begin, a steady income. If you qualify, you start at $448.80 a month (before deductions). And you can only go up from there, as you become more skilled in a train- ing program that's guaranteed in writing. Also as part of the package, you're provided with good housing, clothing and food — no matter how high the cost of living climbs. Medical and dental costs aren't your worry, either. The Army takes care of you from head to toe. And there are many new educational opportunities open to you in your spare time — with the Army footing a large share of the bill. With 30 days paid vacation a year, you'll have plenty of time to travel where you want to. It adds up to a lot of benefits you can count on. And you'll have the unique satisfaction of serving your country. That's for sure. Call me. Army Sgt. First of all to Mrs. Linda Hale and Mrs. Vivian Chisolm, our advisors, for the patience, guidance, and love they displayed throughout the production of Shore- line ’80. Without these two wonderful people we would never have succeeded in this fantastic accomplishment. ... A special thanks to Mrs. Katherine Gradick, her Administrative and office staff, and the faculty for, let’s just say, everything! ... To every business establishment that sponsored this year’s annual. ... To Coach Bruce King, who patiently answered the continuous questions asked of him and whose generous lending of his photographic equipment and skill was much appreciated. ...
