Not only did the Dol- phins win more games than pre- dicted but they won more games than any other Marathon High football team, ever. The season record was a surprising 6-3. The Dolphins started out by beating Pace, a AAA school from Miami. Underdogs for most of the year’s games the Dolphins managed to beat the number one team, LaSalle. In the third week of play Marathon defeated the Westminis- ter Warriors, whom M.H.S. had never beaten before. In the 4th game the Dolphins squad suffered from a long bus ride, but the Belen team capitalized on the Dolphins' mistakes and defeated them. The Coral Shores team rolled into Mar- athon looking for a win, and they found one. After dropping 2 games the scrappy Dolphins came back to trounce on Dade Christian, St. Andrews and Ransom, scoring 73 points to their opponents’ 6. Marathon completed its regular season with a superb showing at Pine Crest. 34 Sports ON FIGHTING Through a tough and hot battle the Dolphins were all the Panthers could handle. But after the dust set- tled the Panthers won. The Dolphins finished a fine season with a 6-3 record and a second place spot in the Gulfstream Conference. Every team has its outstanding play- ers; the Dolphins likewise had stars. Brian Fuhrer was recognized for his outstanding offensive one play. David Perry was named also to the Gulfstream Conference All-Star Team. Tom Gerbase was named as the number 2 guard out of over 150 guards in the conference. Willie Mills was not only named to the conference team but also served as a leader to the Dolphin team. His play characterized his desire to play. Few people ever have the ability or the chance to play football after high school. Willie is one of these people. For all the Dolphins, it was just a super season. Julie was chosen queen for 1978-79. Julie’s future plans include college and a career involved with the care of animals. Julie also excelled in sports by being honored for two years in a row as All Conference in Volleyball. Mr. Tracy Hoffman, Julie’s King and ours, intends a career in the area of mechanics and expects to obtain education to help him in his endeavor. 42 Sports MR. Our goalie, George Stienmetz, can legally touch the ball with his hand, and in doing so, he has blocked many of our opposing teams’ points. Franco D’Ascanio and Brian Anthony have also scored many points for our team. The Mona- han brothers, John and Arthur, have also helped our team tremendously. Sports 63 SIDE OUT After a grueling two month schedule that had them on the road more than at home, the Lady Dolphins finished their volleyball season with an impressive record. The Var- sity squad handily defeated Mary Immacu- late and arch-rivals Coral Shores. Under the leadership of co-captains Julie Skeen and Kim Kenneson, the team finished its season with a 7-9 record, as the top team in the Keys. The Junior Varsity squad, not to be outdone, finished with an exceptional 7- 0 record and gained distinction as the only undefeated Keys con- tender. As Madame Julie had predicted, it was not a perfect sea- son, but a very good one. These Lady Dol- phins want to be sure that everyone knows they’re Number One. 64 Sports At the end of the season, the team voted to decide which members would receive recognition for their particular accomplishments. Sue Snow received the Sportsmanship Award. Lyn Gardner was named the Most Improved Player. Julie Skeen earned distinc- tion as the Most Valuable Player. Kim Kenneson received the Fenton’s award for the Most Consistent Player. The enthusiasm and teamwork shown by these girls and the rest of the team gave the team their best season ever. It plays a schedule of 10 games, 5 home and 5 away. It is sponsored and coached by Dr. Edward Gates. They practice and play all matches at the Sombrero Golf Course in Marathon. The players include: (from top down) Captain, James Wynn, Landy Dam- sey, Pat Lynch, James Suarez, Jimmy Moore and Jaques Pauchey. This young team will face all teams in the Gulf Coast Conference which is deemed by most, the roughest in the South. 68 Sports Swing it James! Mr. Dodd, our co-sponsor Sports 69 The yearbook staff is only sorry that extensive coverage of the baseball season will not be possi- ble. Largely due to the deadlines the yearbook staff must meet and the conflicting baseball schedule, we can only guess what kind of year the team will have, but we think it will be great. Some of the outstanding players to watch for are Garret Shea, whose consistency at the bat and sure hands have kept the Dolphins in many a game. George Joseph will be a good player to watch; his pitching game should be at its peak during the 78- 79 season. All the players will be giving 100 per- cent at all times, but one stands out above all the rest . . . Willie Mills. Willie has been scouted by several professional teams and also some major colleges. His name is known to all teams whom the Dolphins face. He is a constant threat to the opponents not only as a pitcher with remarkable ability, but also as a batter. Whenever he approaches the plate all the outfielders move way back. He’s helpful to new players and expectant of veterans. He hates to make mistakes because he loves to win. He makes baseball at M.H.S.. the great American game it should be. This year’s yearbook is at a loss because it won’t be able to fully cover baseball, but to the team and the coach, we all wish a good season and another district cham- pionship. COACH The managers play an important part on the baseball team. They are the coach’s righthand. Cindy Windberg is a new addition for the ’79 season along with the bat girls. But Tricia Graham has been a manager for her 3 years of high Sports 73 school at M.H.S. Coach King has said, “Without her the team wouldn’t win.’’ Well, not exactly but they sure would be at a loss. When these points were added to the 414 points he scored in his first (1977-78) season, they earned Calvin the career scoring record for Marathon High School — 1,034 points. Another team record was set this year by Nate Kitchen, who rebounded 285 times during season play. In his three years with the Dolphins, Nate has compiled a total of 574 rebounds, earning him a career record of his own. Being in 8th grade also means taking the literacy test. They are learning prepositional phrases and more com- plicated math problems than they did in 7th grade. The teachers are being helpful in making sure they pass the test. This will be their last year to get themselves straight. They have to make the decision whether to go general or aca- demic. They will also have to learn to be more mature and more responsible.
