Our Trip Through School On a beautiful September morning in the fall of 1947, our group of 30 little boys and girls started a trip through school by boarding the Marathon School Bus. We didn 't have far to ride until we reached our first stop where Miss Dress welcomed us and assigned us places. Even the snow didn't keep us from play that year. Don, who enjoyed the snow most of all, took a nice nap while his clothes were drying on the radiator. Two passengers, Iack Smith and Mary Meyer, were waiting to join our group as the bus came to its second stop. Mrs. Waldstein, having just assumed the duty as guide at Marathon, helped us have a pleasant visit. A small romance started during this time. Marcia, who wasn't a very co-operative Iuliet, hid behind Pearl Ann when Richard tried to kiss her. We had lots of excitement during our third excursion. Pearl Ann didn't eat much because the boys would tell her the food wasn't good. When she turned away, they slyly cleaned up her tray for her. Tommy and Ion didn't get along very well either. The fights between them were fast and furious. If the supervisors, Miss Tryon and Mrs. Custis, hadn't been around, there would probably have been a lot more. Bernadine joined us at this stop. Waiting to board the bus at the fourth terminal were Erla and Vivian. Miss Lovrien intro- duced them to the rest of the passengers and Glen decided to be Erla's personal guide by showing her the sights every noon and recess. We boarded the bus to continue our journey and at our next stop Miss Britt was our guide. During our visit we had a contest in arithmetic. The teams were called the Yankees and the Dodgers. The losing team, which was the Yankees, had to treat the Dodgers to a Halloween Party. As Richard kissed Miss Britt good-bye, we continued our trip. Mrs. Benson conducted the sixth excursion, which was joined by Larry Pritchard. We all got tired of working and everyone who had watches set them ahead so we could have a longer P. T. class. Our stunt failed. When we reached the gym for our class, another group was already there and we had to return to our room. We nearly lost our P. T. period for the rest of the year. At our next delay enroute, we took on one more passenger, Shirley Ralph. We became very attached to our chaperone, Mr. Bressler, and were sorry he could not continue with us for an- other season. l Mr. Beckel was there to meet us when we got off the bus for our eighjih expedition. We gained two more passengers, Ronald and Neil Bjorklund. Our boys were runners-up in the Ir. High County Basketball Tournament that year. The final stop was Marathon High School where we were initiated as uhe green freshmen. Plans were made for the rest of our trip, which would contain four tours. r. Kingery was the bus driver for the first tour and Sheryl Nation joined us to complete the pa senger list. The girls, trying to impress the boys, served a delicious dinner, much to the surpris of their guests. Mr. Kingery also took us on our next tour, in which we tried our own riving abilities. Some of the girls, trying to be thrill-cadets gave us plenty scares. We paus d long enough to make a swan to enter in the homecoming parade. The passengers were very disalppointed when the judges decision was announced. On the third tour, with Mrs. Feldman as our guide, we had better luch with our float and won first prize. Jerry and Richard brought honor to our group when Ierry received the Iowa Farmer De- gree and Richard a livestock judging award. To provide some entertainment we staged a famous play, It's Papa Who Pays. Sheryl Nation gained notoriety with her line, Here's the Sam, check! The highlight of this tour was an Evening in Paris. Everyone was anxious to complete our last tour. With Mrs. Danielson as our guide, our float again won first prize. We all stopped at Buntrock-Salie Studio to pose for pictures. For recreation we presented Strictly Formal. On May 22, Ray Cunningham, our commencement speaker, counseled us in preparation for our next journey. Having gained confidence we were ready to start on the road called Toil which we hope will lead to the city called Success.
