Senior hands are accomplished hands , In twelve years they have ac- complished the task of obtaining an elementary and secondary education. When we started the first grade in 1944 our hands were very tiny and inex- perienced. Our teacher, Miss Dress, found that she had 24 pairs of hands to guide along their first step in obtaining an education. Most of the time they were quite dirty and they thought recess was so much more fun than arithmetic. Our hands found it was quite a task learning to print and making that clumsy pencil form the right letter. But as we progressed from year to year our hands progressed also and before we knew it they had given up printing and were now quite experienced at the art of writing. Penmanship wasn't the only thing our hands were beginning to master. They had learned to add, subtract, multiply, divide, pick out nouns and verbs, and do all sorts of other things . By the year 1950, when we entered junior high, our hands were just about the size they are now: however they weren't quite as skillful. After two years of guidance under Mr. Bressler, our hands were ready to reach out for that all important eighth grade diploma. In the fall of 1952 our hands started on the last phase in their education at Marathon School. They had a lot before them in the next four years and a lot of new things to adjust to. Besides adjusting to some strange new subjects, our hands found that they were quite busy participating in high school activities . There were so many things to do such as --football, basketball, vocal and in- strumental music, Student Council, Monocle Staff--that our hands never seemed to have a quiet moment. 1 All these things that we have learned throughout the years have helped to prepare our hands for the duties they will have to perform in the years before us . The year we have waited for so long, 1956, has finally arrived. When our hands reach out for our diplomas on graduation night we hope that they will be ready for the future and capable of upholding our class motto. I. E. GILBERTSON, DENTIST. Byron Olney Laura Meyer ---- Weston Ritchie Charlotte Wood iii This year the senior class presented a dramatization of their class prophecy at P.T. C. As the curtain opens the scene is the Clay County Fair and the year is 1966. Sonna Anderson, a top secret agent for the F. B. I. , has decided to take a trip back to her old home town, Marathon, Iowa, to see how things look after 10 years . Sonna arrives home just as the Clay County Fair is opening: so she decides to spend a day taking in the fair. As she wanders down Midway she comes to the Crystal Gazer's tent and, with curiosity getting the best of her, she goes in to have her fortune told. just as Sonna sits down she realizes that she has seen the crystal gazer before . Of course , it is none other than her old classmate, Charlotte Wood! Sonna and Charlotte start comparing notes about all the things that have happened to them since the year they graduated from M. H. S. and then they start wondering about what has happened to the other members of their class . Charlotte thinks perhaps her crystal ball can bring some light on the subject and as they both look into the magic ball they see some amazing scenes--- Weston Ritchie and Robert Johnson are top-notch night club entertainers. Nita Wolf has turned into an expert on the subject of driver's training. KarenGox,seems to be following in the Roy Wilson, famous hair stylist, is footsteps of Sherlock Holmes. found working on New York's latest debutante , Dorothy Weishaar. Z0 Byron Olney spends most of his time flying around the dirt tracks in his stock car. Mary Keyes and Gcxdon jones are rolling in money. They just robbed Chicago's largest bank. Judy Franker, Alene Howe, and Kay Bentley are at the foot of Mount Everest, ready to go up. Phil Erholm has taken up politics and everybody says that he is the slyest in the business. jerry Sassman is a watermelon farmer and he has so much trouble keeping the kids out of his pqch. Laura Meyer and Karen Buse have given up all hopes of getting married and now own an ultra-modern laundry. Errol junkermeier is at Churchill Downs just ready to race his faithful steed, Dogbiscult. Jim Betsworth and Marvin Janssen seem pretty grim about their business . They are morttcians. South Bend, Indiana, is the scene of Don Kerns' business. He is head foot- ball coach at Notre Dame. Sonna and Charlotte are both very surprised about the occupations of some of their former classmates . They find that hardly any of them have carried out their plans of 1956. But before the girls are able to go into the subject any deeper, Sonna is called away on urgent business and Charlotte has to get back to her cu stom ers . Of course, all hands, regardless of size, shape, or age, are al- ways learningp but the hands of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in high school are usually learning a little more than the average. Freshman hands are green hands . They have the large task before them of adjusting to high school and all sorts of subjects and activities which are foreign to them. One of the puzzles a pair of freshman hands has to ma- ster is the mystery of the x in algebra. But the big test comes about the end of September at the annual high school picnic, where the green hands are initiated and officially become members of the student body. Sophomore hands are busy hands . They are always at work learning something new. The hands in typing class find it is quite a task making those independent fingers hit the right keys and trying to make them move a little faster. Sophomore hands seem to be constantly nursing pricked fingers too. Those silly fingers are always getting in the way of a dissecting knife in biology or jabbing themselves with a compass in geometry. One of the big- gest thrills for a pair of sophomore hands comes the first time they grab hold of the steering wheel on the driver's training car and the climax comes when they finally pass their test and try to make themselves stop shaking long enough to sign their very first driver's license. Iunior hands become decorative hands when they slip that shiny, new class ring on the number three finger. They are nervous hands with slightly chewed fingernails the night of the Iunior Class Play as they thumb through that play book at the last minute hoping they won't forget anything. And final- ly, they become proud hands when the seniors get their first glimpse of the annual Iunior-Senior Banqeut. There is yet to be a pair of junior hands that doe sn't think they have created the most beautiful banquet possible. Yes, the hands of the underclassmen are learning hands . f Hands ., Jumons Q X161 i M1 PRESIDENT . . SECRETARY . . TREASURER . . His widowed mother tells him the money his father left isn't enough to send him to college. Rather than face his friends and the prospect of going through college as little guy , he suddenly becomes engaged to Agnes Wagner, a pretty -land schemingj senior girl. Bob's friends--aided by a college fraternity man--try to line up an athletic scholarship for him: but Bob finds that his grades are too low. He gets himself a tiring and very unglamorous job of pushing a wheelbarrow. Iust when he thinks he has a start on a savings account, Agnes makes a downnpayment on a thousand-dollar engagement ring. Bob is feeling pretty low when the day arrives for his friends to leave for col- lege. But surprisingly enough, Agnes saves the day when she realizes it isn't too much fun being engaged and returns the ring. Bob has enough money for his tuition at State U. and his Blends agree to help him find a job at the college. The main attractions of the day were the parade, game, and dance. The parade was held in the afternoon and was highlighted by the judging of the floats and a pep meeting held on main sheet. SENIOR--FIRST PRIZE SOPHOMORE--SECOND PRIZE IUNIOR--THIRD PRIZE F. PJ-X. FRESHMAN Our homecoming game with Sioux Rapids was very exciting, but rather disappointingto us when the Indians came out on top by the score of 21-20. At half time the homecoming queen and her attendants were presented to the spectators and the queen was crowned by the captain of the football team. The evening was concluded with a dance held in the gym. Sponsored By O. F. Athletic hands were also busy throughout the year, with such tasks as batting baseballs, catching passes, and shooting baskets. Under Coach Stowell's direction the Minutemen defeated Webb, Ware, and Ayrshire, and came within two or three points of several other opponents. Leading hitters for the club were Phil Erholm, Iim Betsworth, and Marvin Janssen, with averages of .475, .336, and .333 respectively. While the football players' hands didn't produce an impressive record, play was generally good and attendance at the home games large. The players began practice about one week before school started, and con- tinued through some of the hottest days of the fall. The Minutemen deve- loped well despite the heat, and looked best while beating Newell and losing to Sioux Rapids by one point. Many freshmen and sophomore hands became experienced while playing positions soon to be vacated by grad- uating seniors . Activities of the hands belonging to M. H. S. basketball players can be summarized by the word practice . The most interesting contests for the Minutemen were those with Webb, Fairview, Lake Center, and Green- ville-Rossie. Regular players for the season were Wes Ritchie, Byron Olney, Larry Kingery, Gary Garton, Larry Sassman, and Iim Betsworth. Garton averaged lO points per contest. The boys are looking for a brighter season next year when quite a number of veterans shall return to the floor. The Minuettes highlighted the season with victories over Terrill, Re- mbrandt, Linn Grove, Sioux Rapids, and Greenville-Rossie. Regulars were Sonna Anderson, Kay Bentley, Karen Waldstein, Carol 'Sue Smith, Carol Bahde, and Ieanne Raper. The latter four regulars will return next year. Karen and Sonna sported averages of 26 and 19 points per game. Every project seems to need financial backing and ours has been no exception: so we especially want to thank our advertisers and also all of you who have been interested enough in M.H.S. to buy a copy of our annual. We found that preparing the REFLECTOR took a lot of time and we want to thank all the teachers for their co-operation. All our pictures were furnished by Mr. Trafton and the Buntrock-Salie Studio. Words can't begin to express our gratitude to them. And last but certainly not least, we Want to thank our advisor, Mrs . Galen Danielson, ifor all the help and advice she has given us .
