Bonds, that provided 57.1 million for expansion of the area schools, were voted down November 7 but were finally passed on December 5. Overcrowding was temporarily solved last year with the addition of Butterfield Elementary School. However, as more students enrolled, the bond issue was badly needed. Two new board members, George Leaming and Olive Barry, took seats on the board on January 9, 1979. They replaced president Max Green, who moved to Colorado, and clerk Dan Post, who lost his bid for re-election. l. Board members Max Green, Fred Hill and Harry Hansen discuss possibilities for the district. 2. Superintendent, Dr. Nels Havens, smiles at the news of the passing bond issue, 3. Board members Brad DeSpain, member, Max Green, president: Fred Hill, member, Daniel Post, clerk, and Harry Hansen, member, Focus On Growth, Expansio t,e,f1f:1f f Board, Superintendent Administrators Keep High School Functioning Marana's administrators did it once more. The job of planning schedules, activities, and keeping law and order around campus was accomplished. Since Marana had grown so much this year there was more work to deal with rit.:r' as well as more students to look after and plan for. Under these conditions, the high school administration kept Mar- ana functioning with great efficiency. 1. Dr. Foster puts his signature of approval on some requisitions. 2. Mrs. Saltzman, Dean of Women, schedules future programs and 11CliviliCS for the student body. 3. Mr. McLean patiently awaits the unknown. 4. Marana had Special Education to aid students in learning skills. The special educators devoted much of their time to helping the exceptional students of the school, who had learning difficulties. Some of these students found a full-time place on cam- pus when the construction class completed building be- came their classroom. Many special learning needs were met in separate special courses as well as within regular programs designed to build self-sufficiency skills. Also, some of the Special Education students proved an impor- tant campus asset when they worked on various cafeteria jobs during lunchtime. Participation in this special pro- gram increased this year and the school was proud of its student-aid program. l. Special Education aide, Yvonne Miranda, helps a student put to- gether a quilt in Home Economics. 2. Ms. Lambertson listens attentati- vely to Teresa Carper as she reads her book aloud. 3. Diversified Occupa There were a lot less jobless students at Marana due to the DO program. Diversified Occupations QDOJ attracted the attention of Marana's job-seeking students and pro- vided them with work inside and outside the school setting. Jobs included butchering, food preparation, horseshoeing, delivery work, mechanics and maintenance. Students worked during the hours they were not attending classes and received credit through the program. DO, in combina- tion with its business-related counterpart, COE, formed Marana's cooperative education program. l. Mr. Hawkins discusses his program's offerings with potential custom- ers. 2. So good in fact, that the school added one more class to the schedule to make room for extra students wanting Spanish instruction. The English Department transferred one of its classes to the auditorium. Paperback Power was held in the north pod during first hour. Other classes in the shop area include Vocational Agriculture, Automotives and Construction. Vo-Ag taught students about agriculture and farming. A building begun in October 1977 and completed this year. became a shelter for the Vo-Ag classes. Through completion of this building, Vo-Ag obtained two classrooms and a large shop area. Building, assembly and brick laying were among the skills practiced by the Construction class, which proved to be a great help to the Special Education department. The Tigers opened up the season with three non-confer- ence games with the Tigers coming out ahead in two of them. Nogales was their first opponent as they entered the AA south conference. The Tigers beat Nogales 28-I 8 with a strong come back in the first quarter. With this victory the tigers pulled off their first homecoming game since l974 and won their first conference game on Tiger turf. The Tigers then traveled to Flowing Wells to tie the Cabelleros l4-l4 and lost the Arizona playoff series that is required in case of a tie. The Tigers then hosted top rival Canyon Del Oro. It was a tough defensive game all the way, with the Tigers scoring first. The Dorados then capsized on a defensive mistake that caused the Tigers two points. Then with a minute and forty seconds left the tigers were stunned as a Dorado ran a punt back for a touchdown with the Tigers losing a heart- breaker, 8-6. The Tigers then went on the road for three games, Douglas, Tolleson and Safford and lost all three games on costly mistakes. The last home game ended in a loss to San Manuel I8-l l. Though the record did not show the Tigers were winners. They were winners to Maraha High School as they brought spirit and enthusiasm to the school. l. I 525. ig 1 VT i' Q '-Q-N ' The junior varsity football team was full of spirit and enthu- siasm through thick and thin. The Cubs finished the year with a 4-5 win-loss record. Coach Catt was very happy with his Cubs despite the record. He commented that with two excep- tions every game was very close and could have gone either way. The Cubs were super spirited through their first three games which they won and that was a sign of a winner. But for them to maintain their spirit and enthusiasm during each of their five losses was a sign of a champion. Mr. Catt noted that the Cubs played really well against undefeated Safford on the second to last game and that the game was even closer than the 13-6 ross indicated. It's always great to finish the season with a win and that's what the Cubs did in scoring a season high of 27 while holding San Manuel to 16. With a lot of hard work, dedication and a few good breaks for a change, next year's varsity looks promising. l. Coach March commented that none of the four losses suffered were by more than one touchdown. The Kittens' defense was extremely intense through- out the year. The stingy Kitten defense never allowed more than 19 points to be scored against them in a single game, and twice opponents were held scoreless. They held opponents to an average of only 8 points per game. In the last game of the season against San Manuel the Kittens stopped the Miners in three consecutive fourth quarter goal line stands. The game finished in a 6-6 tie. Coach March said, I truly believe that this group will give Marana a state championship title within the next three years. I. The season record was 5-1 1, which was a slight improvement over last year's. The varsity Ti- gresses enjoyed wins over Eloy, Flowing Wells and Florence. Of the nine varsity players who participated in volleyball, eight of them will be returning. Judy Berry has left the team, but they will be more experienced next year which will hopefully make the next season successful. Even though ultimate success was not achieved by the girls this year, they were all enthusiastic about the games and played well against some tough schools. l. State quar- terfinals against Peoria was a breeze, but found it tough in the semifinals as they were humiliated by state runner up, Corona Del Sol 78-48, thus ending their chance for the state title. The Tigers had a great season, winning their first AA South conference championship with a record of ll-1, only losing to Nogales 56-54 in overtime, the overall season record was 19-4. Football games, dances and club activities were among the events covered by these students. Assignments were posted in the photojournalism room outlining the events needing coverage, and the students assumed responsibil- ity for them. On the average, each student took 2,500 pictures throughout the year, and about 115 of them were printed. These prints appeared in such publica- tions as yearbook, newspaper and the district newsletter. I. Carl Latimer sets up one of the six enlargers that is used the the photojourna- lism department. 2. So if someone has a special function planned, they could order a cake from the Food Service Club and have it all decorated for the occasion. Black Togetherness sponsored several successful events. A bake sale's profits were donated to Muscular Distrophy as well as money collected from aluminum cans. In November, the club held a dance which featured a disco contest and the beat of top soul disco tunes. During the basketball season, a group of the club's girls performed a dance routine during a basketball half-time. The group sold balloons the Student Council carni- val in March.
